Did anyone else see this headline: I Tried a Fad Diet Off the Internet and It Worked! and really, really hope that paleo wasn't the "fad" talked about?

can you make the title into a question? – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Oct 21 2011 at 0:51

I liked this comment:

I am a physician who loves slate, and reads it like a newspaper everyday (over 10 years). This is the dumbest article I have ever read on this otherwise outstanding publication. This would stand out as the most inane fluff even in US Weekly or Cosmopolitan. Severe calorie restriction is a proven weight loss tool. Whatever "thing" somebody sells you to motivate you to do this is arbitrary. Make no mistake about it, this is the 17,000,000th incarnation of snake oil for the sole purpose of making money.

What's the proposed MOA? Obviously for men it does up testosterone by mimicking LH...what if anything else?

Partial activation of the mu receptor at low hcg doses. The funny part about this for non believers......go try to eat 500 calories without taking hcg and see how far you get. When one gets the injection hunger decreases to allow this. It makes living on the hcg even possible. It does this by using older out moded vestigal appetite circuots that have been upgraded by new evolution. This is why the diet fascinated me and how i became to construct the leptin rx – The Quilt Oct 21 2011 at 2:50
Quilt, what are your thoughts on side effects of the hormone. Seems like injecting pregnancy hormones when you're not (or can't get) pregnant might not be the best idea. – trjones Oct 21 2011 at 3:03
Interesting, Jack. If true, this may be (part of?) why men on TRT who use hCG along with test often claim to feel better than those who use test alone... – Daniel Kirsner Oct 21 2011 at 3:53

Any citation for this Jack? – Evelyn aka CarbSane Oct 21 2011 at 19:18

It is interesting that The Quilt/Dr. Kruse has the following that he does here on Paleo Hacks. – Paleo2.0 Oct 21 2011 at 19:34

I saw it as well. I think it's a crock. Of course you will lose weight eating 500 calories a day. Sadly two women in my office are using it and I asked one of them (kindly) after she said she had lost so many pounds, what the % of BF was lost. She's like I don't care about that. I had to just smile. I wanted to be like well good luck with the muscle loss.

I'm going to re-quote the doctor's comments that Travis quoted below. I wish to heaven we would stop talking about HCG. It seriously turns my stomach.
