I can't sate my hunger with conventional paleo foods no matter what amount I take in. For example, the dinner I just had consisted of:

46g. spinach, 49g. celery, 88g. cauliflower, 116g. broccoli (all in a salad, tossed with 3tbsp. flaxseed oil) 85g. sugarless bacon, 218g. beef steak, 62g. wild steamed salmon.

...and I still feel hungry. Maybe my young age and athleticism are the cause. Should I continue eating, or is my body still adapting to this sort of diet after three weeks?

Next time try eating only the meat. – Travis Culp Oct 21 2011 at 4:12

Wait, what's up with the flaxseed oil? That's usually a paleo no-no. Also, my vote is with the starch. In my experience adding glucose to a meal, even a little bit, can make it a whole lot more filling. And maybe fat other than bacon, like butter or coconut fat or tallow. – Paul Oct 21 2011 at 6:22
Cordain recommends it for its high ratio of omega-3. Is the issue its level of PUFA? I always have the oil raw, if that helps. – Adulescens Appetens Oct 21 2011 at 6:50
The issue is its high level of omega 6 and like other high PUFA oils, can oxidize more quickly than others (not good). Older folks are supposedly less able to make use of the form of omega 3 in flax, though I just read that Seth Roberts (of Shangri La diet fame) thinks that's not necessarily the case. If you're gonna eat flax, better to grind the seeds and eat the meal over the oil. – Beth-WeightMaven Oct 21 2011 at 12:46
Thanks :) Are there any low-PUFA veg. oils out there? And how about nut oils (esp. macadamia)? – Adulescens Appetens Oct 21 2011 at 15:09

If you are young and active, I would guess that adding some starchy veggies to that meal might help. Try some winter squash, yam, or the like with some butter and see how you feel...And I do think that at three weeks in, that your body would definitely still be adjusting, especially if you were eating SAD.

mind over matter

you are obsessed with counting for whatever reason. just eat. sweet potatoes with a drizzle of coconut oil and cinnamon will make you feel good. eat a whole chicken

and stop counting. your body will thank you.

Try some fat. I find that Breakfast is important. I start with four eggs and 2 Tbsp butter and I can barely eat lunch. Often skip it (IF).

Dr. Kruse would recommend this also. – DudleyP Oct 21 2011 at 8:31

If you're hungry just eat. If weighing every gram work for you, do it. But I'd advise you stop that and just eat till you are not hungry anymore, just listen to your body. Unless you only weighed and measure this meal only to provide us more info in this post. And 8oz of steak with a couple pieces of bacon is really not that much food, especially if you're young and athletic.

Make sure you're getting to bed in time, sleeping 8-9 hours. Personally, my hunger gets all weird when I don't sleep enough.

Butter is probably the most satisfying food for me. Mixed with some greens, it makes the dish delicious. I'm starting to prefer my veggies to the protein some nights!

Yes, I had trouble at first like the OP. Then I started topping all my green veggies with a big pat of pasture butter. Problem solved, satiety achieved. – Wcc Kamal Stabby fan Oct 21 2011 at 15:10
