I am 29 year old female, 5'4.5", 126.4 lbs and about 27% body fat. I gained a little excess after my wedding (normal weight is 118 but still about 25% body fat) must have been a food honeymoon! I have a small frame so that is how I can still pack on a lot of fat at 118.

Anyway, I am currently on a water fast and in ketosis and have been wanting to transition into a Paleo/Primal diet and I wanted to know how much fat loss can be expected in the first few weeks or month or so? I have done Atkins before and have experienced fast weight loss but I was much chunkier back then. Is there anyone out there with similar stats when starting Paleo? I would love to hear your feedback.

Thanks!!! Jackie

I am 5'4" also and started paleo at 121 lbs. I was on it 5 weeks and was down to 111 lbs. Hope this helps. I ate no fruit or nuts. Only dairy was creamer in coffee. I didn't exercise but I did consume under 1000 calories per day to compensate. I also didn't eat breakfast, ate a light lunch but a big dinner.

Thank you so much - I really appreciate the information! I was planning on abstaining from nuts and fruit for the first 30 days, now I am sure of it! We were planning on intermittent fasting too since it is pretty much what we do now - thanks again!! Jackie – Jackie Oct 22 2011 at 0:58
After losing the weight, about how many calories does it take for you to maintain the 111 pounds? I find that like you, I also have to cut calories drastically to lose, but maintenance doesn't have to be monitored and is easy peasy :) – Grottenolm Oct 23 2011 at 20:15

My girlfriend was a similar weight to yours before we started with paleo (maybe just a bit heavier). In the first 30 days she dropped somewhere around 15 pounds, which really was a considerable amount for someone who is ~5'4". Just a note, however, that she did not cheat on the lifestyle at all and stuck to lean meats (chicken and fish) for protein, no fruit, no starches really, etc. She was not exercising at the time.

I myself (6'4' man) lost about 20 pounds in a few weeks, which was enormous. However, my eating habits were horrendous before switching over (McDonalds, pizza multiple times per week, TONS of pop and ice cream, etc). I was also not exercising, but stuck to lean meats and veggies only for that time.

I don't know much about the science (body fat % and such), but I hope that is helpful!

Thanks I appreciate the response! My husband is around the same height as you, 6'4.5" and 190 but he has a spare tire and he is doing this with me, I am sure he will lose it all super fast (kind of small bone structure too). We do plan on being super strict because this is a 30 day challenge for the two of us running up to our 7th anniversary (dating, just got married 2 months ago) so I think we can stick to it. Thanks again!! – Jackie Oct 21 2011 at 16:48
Success is far more likely with lean meats. Once you get to where you want to be, increase the healthy fat. – Travis Culp Oct 21 2011 at 20:37
Thanks for the advice Travis! – Jackie Oct 22 2011 at 13:17

My weight loss started out at a little over 2 pounds per week, now I'm losing over a pound a week. I've lost 142 pounds in the past 19 months. I'm still dropping but at the slower rate. You don't want to lose more than 2 pounds per week.

Wow congratulations on your success! And thank you for the advice - slow and steady wins the race right? LOL thanks again, Jackie – Jackie Oct 24 2011 at 15:56

Lots of people don't lose much weight at all. Especially if they're starting out smaller like you.

Agreed, "Paleo" isn't a diet, it's a science-based philosophy on eating. People who lose weight at first typically do so by accident. They inadvertently cut calories, reduce sodium intake, reduce overall fat/carbohydrate intake, increase protein, etc. Once you figure out that all the macronutrient groups (fat, protein, & carbs) are represented in the "paleo" philosophy, you may gain weight back or "plateau" as you reach a new metabolic equilibrium. – FED at LiveCaveman.com Oct 21 2011 at 19:51

I have similar stats, 117lbs. Haven't lost anything but water weight after 10 days, but my shape is changing. My tummy especially is getting flatter. I eat almost no fruits or nuts. Judgment a taste when my bf is eating Otherwise it comes naturally to around 1700kcal per day when I eat as much as I want. Most of it in the form of pork belly, chicken thighs, salmon and beef flank steaks with coconut milk.

Thank you for the response! When previously low carbing, I recall some weeks of no loss but a definitely flattening of the tummy and sucking in of the thighs. Appreciate your input! – Jackie Oct 22 2011 at 13:15

I'm 5'4 and started at a similar weight. In the first three weeks of paleo I lost over half a stone. I was eating fruit and for at least the first week I was eating dates and nuts everyday. I also was having a few non paleo meals a week during this time. I'd say if I'd been really strict I could have lost 3-4 pounds a week.

Thanks I appreciate the response!! I know everyone is different but I was sure there were others with similar height/weight starting points. Thanks again! – Jackie Oct 22 2011 at 13:14

I wouldn't focus on weight. I would focus on measurements (thigh, waist at navel, arms at bicep unflexed, and hip), bf % (get a Hydrostatic Body Fat test done for $60 at most universities) and "before and after pictures".

If you focus on your scale weight, there's a good chance you won't lose much and get frustrated. There are too many factors that weigh into (no pun intended) your body weight on a high protien diet, especially when you throw in a training program in the mix (eg., shedding fat and gaining lean muscle for a net gain of 1 lbs is a good thing).

I loose six pounds of water weight in two hours during a crazy long metcon workout, so focusing on the scale is not ideal for me or anybody on Paleo.

Thanks for the response. There definitely are a ton of things other than scale weight (I admit I can get scale obsessed). I will definitely look for one of these Hydrostatic Body Fat tests, thanks for the suggestion:) – Jackie Oct 24 2011 at 15:54

I don't know that there is a "typical," though I lost 20 pounds in my first two months (which is what I probably needed to lose... still am at this new weight, one year later.) and my wife lost 14 in her first month.

Take the long-haul viewpoint and work on eating habits and feeling better. Something tells me that this will result in the best outcome and that you'll soon be where you need to be and you'll be feeling really good.

Thanks! I appreciate your perspective - long haul is the best thing to keep in mind, since I am sure a lot of us are here for ultimate health and longevity. All the best:) – Jackie Oct 24 2011 at 15:55

I'm 5'6, 205 and started on a pseudo-paleo diet 4 weeks ago. I've lost 12 lbs this month. I eat approx 90% of meals paleo. I do however, eat small quantities of cheese and other dairy, and every now and then have a small scoop of rice. I plan to eliminate these completely soon but I need to do that gradually.

I'm 5'6", 29 year old female and my starting weight was 265 lbs. I've been on Primal now exactly a week, and my weight has gone down to 254 lbs, so 11 lbs lost - in a week! I couldn't believe my eyes when I went to visit the scale this morning.

My ideal weight (taking account to my body structure) is around 155 lbs, so there's a lot to go, but this was a fantastic start!

It is always awesome to see a quick move on the scale! Even if mostly water weight, it can make clothes more comfortable and just make you feel great. Good luck and keep up the great work! – Jackie Apr 20 at 6:57

I am 5'3" and about 135. I had an illness last year which had me bedridden and I gained 60 lbs, first time ever being overweight in my life! I did the hcg diet and dropped 40 lbs, but that was a very strict regimen to keep up and I didn't want to do it as a regular thing, just to jump start weight loss. I then took a job when I got back to work where I sit almost all the time and gained more weight. I just started paleo yesterday, all organic. I'm having extremely light breakfast, just banana and licorice root or raspberry leaf tea, light lunch, and then a bigger (but not huge) dinner, and I'm also exercising an hour a day and doing intense interval training on the weekend days when I have more time. I'll let you guys know how it goes!

Good luck, would love to hear how you progress! – Jackie Apr 20 at 6:56
