I know there are differing opinions on using a whey protein powder, but I have had no real issues with it. However, upon a closer look at the label or my protein powder, the ingredients were definitely a shock and I know I should be using this stuff.
All the other clean proteins I've found all mix very thinly though (using BlueBonnet whey isolate now). Can anyone recommend a brand that mixes up more thickly but is still clean? I like to use it in protein shakes as a snack and like a thicker shake!
Go to True Nutrition:
Here you can make your own custom protein blend and you can even use your favorite commercial blends that our out there for reference, but here you can opt to not add the sweeteners and crap (ALL the blends out there including Primal fuel, progenex, blue bonet list one or more of these ingredients..fructose, sucralose, sucrose ect....or my favorite 'natural flavors' Google it and find some good articles on what this could get you.)
The trade off is the flavor isn't that great but I see it this way; if you want a milk shake after you workout or for a meal replacement then go get a milkshake and stop fooling yourself, if you want something that taste good and is good for you eat a steak, eggs or some real food. If I want to go the liquid fuel route then it's just that... fuel not flavor. 2 scoops in a small shaker bottle with water and drink it down. It doesn't taste good but you won't gag on it either and you will have piece of mind that you aren't getting the additives you don't want. You don't cut corners at the gym so why do it at nutrition, sure it feels better to drink something that 'taste sweet and chocolaty' just like it feels better to do 1/4 squats in the smith machine instead of a heavy 3 x5 out of the squat rack to full depth, it may not be fun while its happening but you will feel much better after its done...
Bluebonnet 100% Natural Whey Protein Isolate is probably the cleanest protein you can get.
Only two ingredients: Undenatured whey protein isolate, natural vanilla flavor.
Mark Sisson's Primal Fuel and similar products are probably about as clean as you will get. http://primalblueprint.com/categories/Store/Supplements/
The other really GOOD thing about Bluebonnet is that it's 100% grass-fed sourced. Most of the ones that mix up really, really thick do so because thickeners (like guar gum, etc.) have been added. If you want a thicker shake, use the same amount of powder, 1/2 the water, and 1/2 ice -- that will give a thicker, more milk-shake like texture.
I also like http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/goat_milk_whey_powder.htm and http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Goatein&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=12663387654436661754&sa=X&ei=tcUNT5-wL4GesQKUxZyNBg&ved=0CHQQ8wIwAA. Both of these are goat-whey protein, and are from grass-fed animals. Again, they don't have thickeners, so they won't be milkshake thick--but using the 1/2 water and 1/2 ice option gives a thicker shake.
The other thing that works for me is using 2 oz heavy cream, 2 oz water, and 1/2 cup crushed ice.
