Hey guys. I've been checking out various condiments, and I noticed that whilst Colmans mustard has sugar in it, French's has none. It has a very small amount of carbs in it per 100g, and it uses 'spirit' vinegar.

Is it ok to use?

Edit: I've edited my post with the nutritional breakdown from their website.

The ingredients are mustard seeds, tumeric (the colour) garlic powder and various spices, water and spirit vinegar.

I guess I'm just asking if spirit vinegar is ok, really.

Great question! I was about to ask this since my toddler is on a mustard kick. Good to hear that it's not terrible – Lizzish Oct 22 2011 at 15:20

Unless you're habitually eating gobs of mustard, you have exponentially bigger problems in this world.

Mustard, if we are talking about senf, seems to be great. There is even some recent research claiming its great for muscle boost. I never liked mustard before but recently got addicted... There are even integral ones, which are great, especially for cooking.

Found the story about it here: healthhabits.ca/2011/09/30/… – majkinetor Oct 22 2011 at 22:19
Maj, thanks for that interesting link! I love spicy brown mustard. It's got mustard and turmeric in it. Sounds like good medicine to me! – Cody Oct 23 2011 at 16:33

Distilled vinegar is often made from wheat and corn, but most commonly made from WOOD. I avoid it, personally. There are natural yellow mustards made with ACV that are quite good.

mustard is so easy to make, and delicious, just get some raw apple cider vinegar, mustard powder and mustard seeds, mix them up to your desired consistancy, you can add lemon pepper, garlic, honey, tumeric, etc......whatever spices you wnat, or just enjoy it as is

Cordain is anti-vinegar because of his theories re acid balance. I myself wouldn't worry about the amount in mustard, though if you were going to eat lots and lots of it, you might consider finding a less commercial variety and/or learn to make it yourself (simplegoodandtasty.com/2009/08/09/…). – Beth-WeightMaven Oct 22 2011 at 15:32

natural vinengar is OK... I don't know why this sudden fear from it. – majkinetor Oct 22 2011 at 16:12
So you have worries about spirit vinegar. Wikipedia claims it's just a more concentrated variety of vinegar. I'm guess it's distilled like other vinegars, so you're not getting any foreign compounds. – Matt Oct 22 2011 at 17:07

It wouldn't be my first choice, because it is acidic, and usually comes in a plastic squeeze-bottle. Acid + plastic = something you don't want in you. 'Nuff said (it IS good on those Applegate Grass-fed Hot Dogs though!).

Find some good, locally made Dijon in a glass jar.

That's why it has turmeric in it. – Ambimorph Oct 22 2011 at 22:49
but it looks so unnatural :) good to know! – sage_ Oct 23 2011 at 0:09

French's probably wouldn't be the best. If you are looking for a mustard, best Choice 100% Pure Mustard is the way to go! It's gluten free, and also made with many of the same ingredients so you aren't missing out on that mustard flavor I know I love!! Hope this helps!!
