Hmm. I don't think you need ten. Paleo is pretty simple.

Let's see. I live mostly by this:

  1. Processed food is bad
  2. Sugar is a processed food
  3. Bread and other grain stuffs are processed foods
  4. Your body needs to move
  5. Your body needs to sleep
  6. You need to be social
  7. Having fun is an important part of life
  8. Get outside every day
  9. Go hungry once in a while
  10. Get away from the screen

Wow. I did have ten :-)

Some of mine are pretty similar to Andreas, but I'll list them anyway:

  1. Eat real food.
  2. Buy food directly from the farmer whenever possible
  3. Avoid grains--especially gluten.
  4. Avoid NADs: soy, industrial seed oils, and processed sugar.
  5. Get lots of sun.
  6. Spend time in nature.
  7. Spend time socializing.
  8. Exercise your body.
  9. Exercise your brain.
  10. Love others.

  4. kraft peanut butter is evil; pure evil hiding behind cute teddy bears
  5. chocolate is best when it is not sweetened
  6. in spite of what my doctor says i do not need fruit to survive; but it makes life so much sweeter
  7. in spite of what my doctor says i do not need whole grains to survive; end of story
  8. living is never easy if you are truly living
  9. living together is better than existing together; connect with people
  10. it is a rewarding journey, not a destination

  1. Avoid excess fructose
  2. Avoid grains (particularly gluten)
  3. Avoid excess Omega-6 (e.g. vegetable oils)
  4. Avoid soy
  5. Focus on eating real foods that my ancestors likely ate....or should have eaten so as to have not screwed me over today vis-a-vis epigenetics so that at least my progeny aren't further damaged
  6. Get adequate sleep
  7. Move around and stay active
  8. Get laid
  9. Chillax and be mindful, in the moment
  10. Realize that diet is but one cog in the machine. Stop obsessing about nutrition once you have the basics down and remediate your past metabolic derangements. Orthorexia is real.

To quote Steve Jobs - "Focus and simplify"

EDIT - My list is not rank ordered, nor is it the "be all, end all". It's just a list of ten things, that's all

BTW why is get laid so low on your list? Granted on my list it wouldn't even rate right now. But I think your #10 should be #1. – none Oct 23 2011 at 0:54

@April - Orthorexics are people that are obsessed with healthy eating. I extend this to include incessant research about nutrition which goes beyond mere intellectual curiosity. Adherence is not the issue. It's when it becomes an obsession and impacts one living their life. I never claimed that I do not eat non Paleo foods or have a perfect diet (whatever that means). Quilt asked for Paleo truisms and so I just threw in my 2 cents. – Aravind Oct 23 2011 at 1:12

@April I just looked at your profile I maybe you haven't been around long enough to read about all the "hack my # of grams of this or that" posts. Or the "hack my butt and/or eye spasms after eating cheese" questions. I myself love to read all about foods and exercise and how it effects my body. BUT if it takes away from my life I am NOT going to do it. For example, I will not kick my husband and kids out if they want to eat bread. I love them. Simple as that. (People have admitted to doing this and ending relationships over diet here which I think is CRAZY!) – none Oct 23 2011 at 3:14

Why didn't Steve "focus" on a "simplified" diet that didn't give him cancer? (<---maybe trolling??) – Futureboy Oct 23 2011 at 5:46

1 it's more what I don't eat rather than do eat - grains, legumes, seed oils, starch in general

2 Basing my diet on healthy protein and fat like home grown eggs, wild game and grass fed animals. (This includes cleaning and prepping our animals and using as much of the animal including offal as possible).

3 Performing inteval exercise rather than long cardio type exercise.

4 Getting sun and/or outdoor time (in WA being outside does not mean sun necessarily).

5 Sleeping or getting into bed (calm down Aravind) at 9 pm and making my kids stay down till 7 am.

6 Playing with my kids.

7 Having a hobby that expands my horizons like reading extensively, learning guitar (I am trying to do this via YouTube right now - seriously) or drawing as a meditation.

8 Fasting - I am starting to believe that concerted "non-eating" time is critical to hormonal harmony.

9 Targeted supplementation since our modern crops and soils are depleted.

10 Laughing - a lot.

Oh hubbs - I wish I could of gotten the romp in the hay in there. Maybe that's all part of bringing home the wild game so I can clean it. Sooo dirty! (What the hell am I talking about??) I think #10 is pretty much my #1 though. – none Oct 23 2011 at 1:29

  1. Changing our behavior in recognition of evolutionary realities can generate huge benefits for health and wellness—even as we take advantage of modern wonders such as emergency medicine, computers, and flush toilets.
  2. Unfortunately, most people can't be persuaded to eat this way, no matter how much you show them how healthy you have become or how many scientific studies you cite.
  3. No one can make me go back to eating an industrial Western diet.

  1. Eat like an animal.
  2. Move like an animal.
  3. Love like an animal.
  4. Play like an animal.
  5. Sleep like an animal.
  6. Express yourself as an animal.
  7. Treat the World as an animal would.
  8. Raise kids as an animal.
  9. Protect the family as an animal would.
  10. Treat others as an animal would.

For those that need it: 'animal' = instinctual, without guilt, as Nature intended, in harmony & balance with the World.

what's Dogma mean? – Hank Oct 23 2011 at 4:16

I believe our bodies and minds are ALWAYS correct in their adaptations to current internal and external stresses. All disease states are simply a physiological adaptive state to the previous and current stresses. To effect our health we must change the STRESSES that have produced this adaptive state rather than attempting to interfere with the bodies appropriate responses to such. There is a small percent of genetic disease that does not conform to this (not genetic "predisposition"....only actual hard wired genetic disease like Down's Syndrome).

This is not paleo per say but is my health paradigm. And eating paleo absolutely is aimed at rectifying dietary stressors. A vital part of the health puzzle.

1 - (Chris Kessler, I think) "If it has a bag or a box, it's probably not Primal/Paleo." 2 - Listen to your body

  1. I am an animal.
  2. My nature is fundamentally a hunter and a gatherer.
  3. I owe nothing to no one, not ever ever ever.
  4. There are natural rhythms to my life.
  5. Everything and everyone is connected in some way or another.
  6. My animal body likes good clean meat and feels invaded when I eat grain and too much sugar.
  7. I love to feel alive- avoid things that make me feel dead.
  8. My hands and brain can make wonderful things, including fire, my own shoes, clothes, shelter, and food.
  9. Human beings can be wondrous and glorious if given the right circumstances.
  10. Listening is always better than talking.

"I owe nothing to no one, not ever ever ever." I thought humans were social creatures... What about your kids?? – cliff Oct 22 2011 at 23:45

i owe my kids nothing- but i give to them out of love – sage_ Oct 22 2011 at 23:56
@sage- I guess your kids won't know jack in the wild. Humans wouldn't know anything without their elders telling them what to do. Plus you chose to have your children they didn't choose to be born. – cliff Oct 23 2011 at 0:58

@cliff “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man's soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet.” Ayn Rand This is what I meant. Not that we can't learn from and teach others, but that I believe I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. – Cacktus Wayfinder Oct 23 2011 at 1:27

@cliff, that may be true, but in the last month my 16 year old daughter opened her first chequing account, went to her dentist appointment, found a new doctor and got a part-time job all on her own with no help from the mother her raised her to be independent out of love for her, not because i owed her. – sage_ Oct 23 2011 at 1:31

A big part of Paleo is you eat Paleo, you can stop trying so hard in life and just succeed.
