Hello all:

I'm on my 6th day of the ketogenic diet, and I am very confused about calories in cooked white rice.

In a PHD thread, Paul writes;

"Restricting carbohydrate consumption to 200 calories per day from “safe starches” like rice, taro, and sweet potatoes. 70 grams of cooked white rice, 150 grams of taro, and 300 grams of sweet potato are an appropriate daily ration".

In tracking my intake on Chron-O-Meter, it assigns a value of 91 calories to 70 grams, not 200.

What am I missing or overlooking?

Many thanks for any help.

any carbohydrate has 3 calories per 1 gram of weight so 70 grams X 3 calories = 210 calories – ben61820 Oct 23 2011 at 14:35
This is confusing to me. Why, then, does Chron-O-Meter assign it a value of only 91? I'm just trying to figure out what I can eat on this diet and have the correct proportions of fat/protein/carbs and not be hungry and stay in ketosis. I'm not trying to lose weight; I'm trying this diet for my migraines. – honeybee Oct 23 2011 at 15:47

What I find exasperating in Carb Talk is the general lack of specificity concerning grams as weight (pre-cooked or cooked) and grams as carb nutritional (energy) value. one begins to get the hang of it from context, but working out equivalences would be a lot easier if the weight/food value distinction were made more clear when recommendations are offered. Just venting ... And not particularly about what appears here at PH. The whole lower-carb world couldmuse more clarity on this, me thinks.

trackyourplaque.com/blog This is an interesting discussion on the effect of carbs on particle size. I know many in the blogosphere are trying to down the precise meaning of what this means but one thing is clear. SdLDL correlates with heart disease across the board. So the nay sayer will have to deal with that speed bump – The Quilt Oct 23 2011 at 16:28
Amen, Dorado! I was starting to think I was much more simple-minded than I had previously believed myself to be! – honeybee Oct 23 2011 at 16:34

He probably meant uncooked which is 250 cals per 70g

agree, cliff; cooked white rice is mostly water – Ed Oct 23 2011 at 14:05
Thanks, Cliff. By my reckoning then, I could have 154 grams of cooked white rice to supply ~200 safe starch caloies. Am I correct? – honeybee Oct 23 2011 at 14:10
yup.............. – cliff Oct 23 2011 at 14:27
Yes, cliff got it, I did the uncooked rice calories by mistake. Thanks, Cliff. – Paul Jaminet Oct 23 2011 at 16:25
Thanks so much for taking time to clarify this, Paul! – honeybee Oct 23 2011 at 16:32

Hopefully Paul will see this question and clarify, but carbs generally provide 4kcals/gram, so a 100g serving for example would have about 23 g of carbs and be about 110 kcals.

I think you have to differentiate between calories of carbs vs calories of the total starchy meal.
