Here's a few ideas:

  • organic fruit delivery service for a few months (only if they eat a decent amount of fruit, not all paleo folk do)

  • buy them a CSA share for 2012

  • make a donation to a local organic farm in their name

  • local honey or really good quality maple syrup

  • super fancy and special spices or dried herbs

  • A CROCKPOT (I may be biased, but a good crockpot is AMAZING.)

  • gift card to a local butcher/Whole Foods/etc.

  • mandolin slicer (for all those veggies!)

  • really good salad spinner (OXO has a stainless steel one that's AWESOME)

  • homemade infused olive oils

  • really good quality supplements (they are so pricey, I would love this gift!)

  • set of Pyrex glass storage containers (this was the BEST baby gift we got, and it was a weird baby gift, but we have cherished these and used them for all of our leftovers!)

  • subscription to Paleo Magazine

Hope these help!

Sarah

Second the crock pot! That's the single most helpful tool I have. – barefeet Oct 24 2011 at 12:29

Lots of good answers. If it's someone who is on the fence about diet, give the book "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis. It's helped several of my friends.

I was once a very self-righteous vegetarian and I'm from a seriously meat eating family. Though I veered away from vegetarianism decades ago, my two eldest brothers continue to think of me in those terms to some degree. They don't know I'm Paleo per se but the last thing they would expect to get from me for Xmas is: grass-fed beef jerky. Won't they be surprised, in that "WTF has he finally gotten sane" sense.

I like to give crockpots or slow cookers - such a good time of year for those.

I would love to get a le creuset dish!

EDIT: this year I am giving homemade vanilla and homemade preserved meyer lemons in a gift basket. I'm getting together with two girlfriends with kids the same age - the kidlets are having a sleepover and us ladies are making vanilla and preserving lemons and drinking a box of wine! Nothing better than Christmas - I think I'll make glog(swedish mulled wine) out of the box of wine !

+1 for Le Creuset anything! Their cookware lasts forever – Priscilla Oct 23 2011 at 17:56

Lodge has a line of enameled cookware for 1/3 the price that is every bit as good. – pixiedyke Oct 23 2011 at 19:33

Gift card to Whole Foods (or whatever local co-op, store that sells good food...)

I'm broke. I have stainless pots and pans. I can get paleo books from my library. But the ability to buy food? That's always a gift I can use!

I just added an Amazon wishlist button that you can supposedly use anywhere, and I'm hoping I can add 1/4 cow with it. – Happy Now Oct 24 2011 at 23:06

While I think a great paleo book could be good, if I were giving to someone who already follows a paleo diet, I would fear that they already have the book. I vote for a cast iron skillet. It wouldn't hurt to have more than one.

I'm on a perpetual tight budget, so I usually go with homemade gifts. Some gifts I've given in the past; jars of unsweetened berry jams, jars of saurkraut, jars of kimchi, specially flavored pretty bottles of kombucha, applesauce, pearsauce, beeswax candles...I've never given books, but there are so many wonderful paleo nutrition and cookbooks one could potentially get for a gift, and quite possibly used if your budget is like mine! I have also given coupons for an initial consultation with me to family and friends, and I have made face creams and body scrubs as well.

I do homemade too. I find it therapeutic making the gifts, and I end up doing something that the recipient will be able to use. My family doesn't need more "stuff," but edible goodies or homemade things work well. For them, anyway. – blueballoon Oct 24 2011 at 16:03
The last two years I've done bacon jam and preserved lemons. Big hits! – Shari Bambino Oct 24 2011 at 18:36
I was going to do jars of Sauerkraut this year - made with love! Its something that everybody wants but never gets around to making, so might as well make a gift out of it (economical too as I don't have much money) – Grottenolm Oct 24 2011 at 20:19
Bacon jam!!! Drooling...would you post a recipe Shari? – Rogue Nutritionist Oct 25 2011 at 0:22

Perfect Health Diet. All things considered, the best evidenced based Paleo book out there IMO

Maybe people think it's irresponsible of you to wait until Christmas to give the Jaminets' book to people you care about. – Paul Oct 24 2011 at 0:28

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Give a man a cast iron skillet and feed him for a lifetime.

Not that this analogy really applies so well, but I'd say a cast-iron skillet would make a great gift.

Kamal, a cast iron skillet is much better hunting instrument than our book. Most game would surely survive getting hit by our book, but an iron skillet strike ... – Paul Jaminet Oct 23 2011 at 17:36

Paul - stick to biochemistry and astrophysics. You don't know squat about animal book hunting. – Aravind Oct 23 2011 at 17:40

Just remember there is a universe where everyone is paleo and the wheat eaters have to hide away on forums called Cerealhacks discussing how to cook pasta. – Matt Oct 23 2011 at 18:03
