I've been trying to drink coconut milk as part of a shake for breakfast lately, but it's been causing quite a stir in my stomach.. Anyone else having issues with coconut milk acting as a diuretic?

This sounds like you are confusing coconut water and coconut milk. Coconut water is naturally found inside young coconuts and would be drunk in cupful amounts. It's high in potassium, so might have diuretic effects. Coconut milk is made by combining mature coconut meat and water, and produces a high fat, creamy substance usually used in smaller amounts or in dishes like curries. I sometimes eat up to 1/4 cup on berries, but no more. A cupful of coconut milk could well cause laxative and other digestive problems. – Karen Jul 16 2010 at 12:41

Makes you wonder how the people on Gilligan's Island managed to film an entire half hour show without having to run to the bathroom :) – Nemesis Sep 3 2011 at 3:03

If you're talking about coconut milk, you may just be having trouble dealing with all the fat. It can act as a laxative, not necessarily as a diuretic. You may need to start slowly, then ramp up the fat over time so your body can deal with it. If you think about it, in nature, there's no way we would have access to such a concentrated form such as coconut milk in a can. We would have to find and crack open many coconuts to get the same amount in one can, that we can simply chug.

Robb Wolf spoke about this recently in a podcast of his: http://robbwolf.com/2010/07/06/the-paleolithic-solution-episode-35/

I'm actually trying to figure this out right now. I have been putting coconut milk in my shakes this week and have been having some stomach issues as well. But, I was on vacation last week and ate horribly, and may be paying for it. I don't recall having this problem last time I used coconut milk.

Only happens to me when I drink SO Delicious Unsweetend Coconut milk. If I use Thai canned first press milk I have little issues. Not sure why, but yeah it happens to me as well.

I'll have to try that brand, thanks! – Morgan Jul 15 2010 at 20:09
If you look at the SO Delicious Coconut Milk label, turtlemountain.com/products/… you will notice that in tiny print, right below Coconut Milk it says "Beverage." Checking the label will turn up all the various supplements added to make it more "milk like". Nutritionism in action. Notice the carrageenan and D2. Maybe it's something to do with the additives (history in industry of mixing wrong rate) or the processing. – Karen Jul 16 2010 at 12:32
