Very interesting piece questioning the validity of the calorie in controlling obesity and stressing an emphasis on eating real food. [If only more people in the UK listened to Radio 4... :)
If you missed it, it's on iPlayer here.
There was some really good information in that piece. Well worth listening to. I think most people would be well served to stop counting calories. It's not that calories don't matter, but that if you use them as the sole basis for choosing your foods you are likely to make really bad choices.
Since going paleo I have stopped all counting and measuring of my food in any way. (I don't count carbs, either. Gasp!) And yet, weight is coming off consistently and effortlessly. It's pretty amazing how easy it is. I've been eating a whole foods, fresh from the farm diet for years, but until I upped the healthy fats and dropped the grains I never saw much change in my weight. It was healthier than the SAD, to be sure, but I wasn't losing any weight...until I made those last two changes.
I can't take anything Zoe Harcombe has to say seriously. She remained a vegetarian until April 2010 and ate grains for two meals for over a decade. Her real whole foods used to include whole wheat pasta and brown bread. Don't believe me? Watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ALXmgwqjC8
She's a Taubes parrot with a separate fats & carbs twist with sprigs of candida, food intolerance and hypoglycemia caused cravings. Another LC shill.
Eat real food. Duh. Calories still ultimately count, but you're far less likely to ever have to count them.
I heard the program, and Zoë Harcombe talked ABSOLUTE BIOCHEMICAL NONSENSE.
She proves that she is really clueless. I have filed a complaint to BBC radio 4.
Zoë Harcombe claims that if you do not eat carbohydrates, your body will not store fat.
She says that by avoiding carbohydrates, there will be no glucose available to form the glycerol necessary to bind the 3 fatty radicals (forming the triglycerides that are stored inside adipose cells) and, consequently, the fat that you eat will have no choice but to leave your body and not collect in your adipose tissues and love handles.
HELLO...!! How about GLUCONEOGENESIS? (which anyone can check on Wikipedia) This is the process by which glucose can be formed by the body in cases of starvation or low carbohydrate diet. The body manufactures GLUCOSE from proteins. Gluconeogenesis takes place mainly in the liver, and to a minute extent, in kidney cortex.
So, whether you eat carbohydrates or not, your body will always have glucose, enough to store any excess fat you eat.
Think about it logically... Body will never waste any excess food that you eat. It will always find a way to store it.
The proof is very simple: Try to eat only fat and protein, but with zero carbohydrate. Zoë Harcombe says that in this case, the fat will come out of your body.
Hang on... Will you poo or wee the fat? Absolutely and utterly not!
In addition, gluconeogenesis (which increases considerably when you do not eat carbohydrates) , will lead to KETOSIS. Ketones and aldehydes are poisonous to the brain and can lead to confusion and even death in diabetic keto-acidosis.
This woman is dangerous and will certainly lead to shortening life span of hundreds of gullible people, who will die early from atherosclerotic heart disease, strokes, hypertension...etc.
BBC must do better than to bring on irresponsible witchcraft pushers to fill in the time.
