I have been breaking out a little more than normal the past week and I wanted to know if anyone experienced this when starting a Paleo or Low Carb way of eating. They are along my jawline and chin. I know this is typically hormonal related but could it be my body getting used to no sugar and carbs? Thanks!!!

I had more acne on paleo when eating nuts. Fruits didn't really help either. – Korion Oct 26 2011 at 17:13

Probable detox. – majkinetor Oct 27 2011 at 10:49
Do you eat dairy? – Marie Oct 27 2011 at 11:44

No to your question. But I want to share that after years of paleo with varying carb and n6 levels in my diet the only thing that has kept me absolutely zit-free has been since I started supplementing with 4-6000 IU Vitamin D and Vitamin K2 from Thorne (that would be the MK4 versio) available here: thorne.com/Products/Vitamins/prd~K170.jsp Seriously it has been a huge change in my life – ben61820 Oct 27 2011 at 13:48

Yep- happened to me and my brother as well- cleared after a couple weeks. Probably detox is the consensus I've heard. – HeleneLohr Oct 29 2011 at 17:03

I actually had this happen to me as well. The first month I was constantly breaking out! It felt like I hadnt broken out that bad in years! I do not have acne, but I have also never really broken out at all. Once I started Paleo I was breaking out with a few on my chin, they seemed to never stop! About month three they just went away and now my skin feels better than ever! Stick with it! It will eventually even out.

I think Jenn's right. If it doesn't drive you insane, try to give it at least a month or two. I wonder if it has something to do with the detoxification process, which I've read actually takes about a year (not that you should expect to have acne outbreaks for that whole time). – Albert Oct 26 2011 at 17:19

I don't know why, but the same thing happened to me. I cleared up in 3 weeks or maybe less.

My acne definitely cleared up when I started Paleo. The effect was immediate. I attribute it to taking out the grains in my diet. Before, when I used to eat 200 g of carbs a day (mostly whole wheat bread and oatmeal), I would get at least 2 new pimples a week. Now, all of my friends are telling me how clear my skin looks.
Stress does play a factor (I'm a college student) and now I only get very small pimples maybe once a week but they go away really fast and don't become all red and painful like they were before.
For me, my skin regime is rinse my face in the morning using only water. At night, I use an Olay facial wash with salicylic acid in it (I know, not very Paleo, but it's been working great for me). And when I do get a pimple, I dab a little bit of the Proactiv mask on it. It really does reduce its size!

I just eat salilcylic acid (aspirin) now. Makes me damn warm and cozy, and I'm not overdosing at all (taking mini-portions). – Korion Mar 8 2012 at 14:12

what!

I always here of acne immediately clearing up from Paleo. It did for me. I still get some, but it's always stress related and doesn't look so bad.

It could be that your body is just reacting because things have changed, I have the same thing. Whenever I change things like eating habits or supplement intake I break out. If you have acne, it means that this is your weak spot in your body and will act up whenever something happens.

It is odd as it is on one side/area of my face. Right along my right side chin, side of face and kind of under my jaw line. I'm just hoping it is my hormones normalizing. – emily Oct 27 2011 at 13:01
True. I, again, have the same thing. for me it's only in the neck and on the jaw line. I don't know why.. – sanhellendoorn Oct 28 2011 at 10:29
Oh same here, neck and jawline. They are painful. – Jp2gen Mar 8 2012 at 14:59

This is currently happening to me. I think it's just the toxins being cleared away. You have to remember that your skin is an organ and your impurities come out of your skin, so I think it is the impurities coming out that my body is getting rid of. Mine are on my chin and jaw line too! It seems to be related to the diet considering it's in the same place for all of us! :) I figure it's the impurities in my skin and toxins in my skin coming out. I think it will go away as soon as it's done cleansing itself, but in the meantime I'm going to get a facewash with benzyl peroxide in it like proactive!

I notice acne from two very distinct causes. The first is excess sugar/fructose consumption. The second is excess PUFA consumption, specifically omega 6 but either causes this for me. I actually started breaking out like crazy when I increased my fish oil intake.

My advice is to figure out how much sugar you are eating and how much PUFA you are eating. Reduce both of those as much as possible and see if anything changes.

Are you sure fructose causes this? Any history of fructose malabsorption? – Korion Mar 8 2012 at 15:05
I say fructose excess since I don't notice the same issues when I eat the same amount of carbs but they are from starches. I guess it could be other things causing that part of it. I don't know whether I have a history of fructose malabsorption. – JakeA Mar 8 2012 at 16:35
Meaning I DO see issues with either a lot of chocolate or sugary fruits like tons of mango and such or sometimes ice cream. Could just be processed sugars in general. – JakeA Mar 8 2012 at 16:36
