The power went out in SoCal for 12 hours a while back, and with the right kind of eyes you could see the cracks in out society starting to form. People were out of food because they ate it all thinking it would spoil. The gas pumps would not pump because the electric motors that ran them had no juice. The money and credit cards in pocket had little worth all of the sudden, and the police couldn't even be flagged down. That is when it really hit me that we are probably only one good week long power outage/oil stopage away from a chaotic breakdown of this unbelievably fragile "civilized" society.

Whats your survival strategy.......?

I've been in many outages. But a few years back when I was in the Seattle area there was an outage for close to a week during the winter. People tried grilling to cook...... inside! There were unfortunate outcomes. So people, do NOT include indoor grilling in your plans. – none Oct 29 2011 at 0:03

Well, that certainly would thin out the herd. More food for the rest of us! – Nemesis Oct 29 2011 at 0:05

Dogs would also come in handy, to alert their owners to any movement outside the property. Also several extra cans of gas, a good first aid kit, water purifying kit, night vision scope, lighters/matches. What else am I missing? – Nemesis Oct 29 2011 at 0:31

You soCal people are so melodramatic :P....move to the midwest or northeast for a winter and you'll realize the world will not end due to loss of power or some snow flurries! Pull up your skirts!

best comment on here! and i am even from so cal! haha – Jenn Oct 29 2011 at 19:31
Nice try buddy but I was born in New York and raised in Cleveland theres plenty of melodramatic obese people in the Midwest and the Northeast. Like animals and our ancestors those with the ability to move to more survivable greener pastures do. – Cory151 Dec 29 2011 at 5:06

My strategy is to not share my strategy with anyone else!

This is a good plan. Plus one........ – none Oct 29 2011 at 0:02

That's not a bad plan as long as that strategy includes keeping this 300lb. concealed pistol carrying pistol carrying person from commandeering your resource. – lil' Richard frm tx fan Oct 29 2011 at 11:06
Good point amerindian, although at the end of the world I won't bother to conceal my 45, or my AR, or my M1A, or my... – Tim Oct 30 2011 at 17:07
Touche Tim, I only say pistol because I think if I believed it was reasonable to worry about some "doomsday" scenario, I wouldn't count on being able to access much more than I had on me at the moment. – lil' Richard frm tx fan Oct 31 2011 at 4:52

Sorry -- I've lived in Hurricane Country for most of my adult life. We regularly have power go out for a week, or a MONTH... sometimes more (and usually at least once a year). Before that, I grew up in Upstate NY, on the southeastern edge of Lake Ontario... needless to say, "extended power outage" was a routine phrase around where I grew up, 'cause winters up there are a -bear-. You know, people learn. Most folk here have at least a few days' food in the larder, and folk also come together to share resources, IME. The last big hurricane through here, everyone came together and grilled on a common fire, and shared what we had with one another in the neighborhood -- and fed the folks in the neighborhood who didn't have the means or foresight to "put by".

I do have to say, though, that it's hard these days. I learned to cook and preserve food as a youngster, and did my level best to teach -some- of those skills to my own kids. Most of the friends of my offspring can't cook anything that doesn't go into a microwave. The younger generation would have to learn some new skills if things were to change dramatically... and it likely wouldn't be pretty, the first few times they tried 'em out.

That's another thing. I've been 'round the 'survival' movement for a while, and the general inclination there is "every man for himself", which is not only HARDER, it eliminates one of the best resources we have to survive all hell breaking loose... someone to help and to protect our backs while WE'RE helping -- honestly, if we're going to face a major disaster, we're going to HAVE to figure out how to look out for our fellow man as well -- or we're no better than rabid animals. Even most regular animals take care of the members of their herd/pack/etc., and even savages care for the members of their tribe.

I once saw a t-shirt that said "knitting is my post-apocalyptic survival skill". Sounds about right.

My strategy is good legs, bicycle skills, and eating bugs.

Global oil production peaked in '05 or '06, depending who's statistics you go by. That's when the economy started crumbling, because the whole monetary system depends on future growth to give credibility to these promissory notes we call money. Without growth, we're sunk. It's a done deal. We would be fully collapsed already except for the Wile E. Coyote effect, pausing us in mid-air before we realize the grand canyon is below us.

And get this: we're not even into the shrinkage part of the oil production curve yet. We're still on the plateau high up. The downturn comes any day.

Whoopie!

What the hell does that picture, or your comment, have to do with OP's question? – Nemesis Oct 29 2011 at 0:52

The narcissism in and romantization of the post-apocalyptic is the culmination of a myopic "us vs them" worldview. What the US is facing is slow decline, not an over-dramatized end of the world scenario. The world won't end and it won't see you starve. – Dean Oct 29 2011 at 10:15

Ha ha!! Loved it! Sorry Americans but really sometimes you watch too many movies. – queen of the stone age Oct 29 2011 at 12:06

Dean, that bit of mental masterbation was quite possibly the most pretentious load of crap I've ever read on PH. Have your home hit by 4 hurricanes in one year and lose electricity for over a month, and then tell me planning for, and having a survival strategy is narcissism and fantasy. – Joshua Oct 29 2011 at 12:49
Don't try to justify/intellectualize your comment, Dean. This was just a cheap shot at Americans, which had ZERO basis to what OP's question was about. So she was talking about a power outage in SoCal. Power outages are not the end of the world, but prepping for emergencies is a smart move no matter where you live. Emergencies come in all shapes and sizes, so maybe try and refrain from snarky, unproductive comments, hmmm? – Nemesis Oct 30 2011 at 17:35

Ok, here's how it's going down. The U.S. presidential election is coming up in November, right now democrats and republicans seem to get along worse than they ever have, and a brilliant court ruling says that folk can make anonymous donations to campaigns for unlimited amounts of dollars. So what's going to happen is someone is going to cheat. They're going to take those unlimited funds, that could be donated by anyone in the world, and try to buy the election, and it's going to work. For a few weeks anyway, then someone will figure out what happened and call shenanigans on the cheating bastards. The cheating bastards will deny it, even though it will become really obvious, and the other side will scream like hell and try to call the election unfair and take the cheater out and put their guy in. At this point the Federal gov will stop working as they have their little power struggle, confidence in the U.S. will be shaken/ruined which will be the last bullet in the head of our stupid economy, markets will crash, money will quickly begin to be worthless. Our crashing economy and worthless money will wreck things all over the world, dragging other economies down into the gutter with us, once all the other economies start to go down, ours will go down faster, which will make theirs go down faster. People will panic when their money is worthless, this panic combined with no federal government will scramble the rest of our little society up good, once some folk stop doing their jobs, society becomes less efficient and this only speeds up all the other nasty things going on. Frantic irrational people will raid the stores, food supplies will be used up in about 6 weeks. The supplies could last much longer if people wouldn't take more than they can store, but they will, once the electrical power gets unreliable most of the food will rot before its eaten. So now were down to hunting, farming and robing. As food in cities runs low, people will begin to move, and road crews will form. These road crews will be on all roads in and out of cities and will be made of the stupidest, most violent militant fools your town has to offer. So watch out for them. Hunting will only be good for about 6 months, by then all the large animals will have been hunted to extinction or really close to it. Again, they could last much longer but most folk don't know how to preserve meat, so they'll have to hunt more than they would really need to. So now we have run out of store food, and have hunted out all the large animals, road crews at this point will be the first to switch to eating people, but everyone else will follow shortly after. This will continue until the population of the world is down to a small enough number that people can wander around for weeks at a time without seeing anyone else. 500 million worldwide or so. Probably less. People will be grouped around the coasts, pretty much back to square one. Here's the fun part. The election that starts all this is in November, it'll take a few weeks for the cheating to become obvious enough to cause a major divide, and maybe another week or two to really cause big trouble for the world economy, putting the date for this end of the world scenario right about the end of december, which lines up nicely with the old Mayan end of the world date. So if there's a big surprise this election, you'd be best to get some good friends, and set up camp on a remote section of a well traveled road, so you can start robing them poor pilgrims as they flee their starving town. Cheers

That was really disturbing... – Stephanie Dec 29 2011 at 18:23
Good point. Man is Wolf to man, it's recently come out of Oxford that 30 percent of hunter gather death was due to homicide. The disturbing thing is that women and children apparently weren't spared. – Cory151 Dec 29 2011 at 20:22

Well I dont own any pets but I do own a couple of guns and according to these 2006 statistics there are "Americans own approximately 73 million dogs, 90 million cats"

So I guess Ill go cats and dogs first..... Then bugs........ Then lastly......grain eaters.

I listen to the survival podcast:

http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/

It talks extensively about this subject from every angle possible. The guy is not some crackpot conspiracy theorist and the majority of the skills are practical and useful even if nothing goes wrong. Robb Wolf was actually a guest on the show recently as well. The guy who runs it is named Jack Sperico(sp?) and he is a paleo eater himself. Here is his basic breakdown of survival from what I've gathered so far:

There are 2 scenarios, you either have to "bug in" or "bug out".

Bug in means something like the power grid went down like you mentioned and you have to survive at home for awhile, here's how to do this: Have community established long beforehand so you and your neighbors can get through it together, share skills. Have extensive backyard food production including a great garden and small animals such a chickens if possible. Have plenty of food stored away, grain in buckets to give to your neighbors who are starving, and coconut oil both store very well. He goes into more detail... You also want to own and KNOW HOW TO USE PROPERLY a firearm for hunting and (probably not going to happen) protection. He has done a lot of episodes with a great guest on producing your own energy at home...know how to cook the food you have including bones and every piece of an animal that is edible...lots more but thats all thats coming to my head.

Bug out would be a disaster scenario like forest fires force you from your home. He doesn't talk as often about this so I don't remember as much but it basically involves knowing basic vehicle repair, having somewhere to go, and having a bug out bag full of all the things you will need to survive...

There is so much more... Give it a listen.

If you are in CA, you should have an earthquake kit with AT LEAST 72hrs of food/water. More wisely you'd have 14 days worth. Doesn't necessarily need to be paleo, although you may need to be careful if you're sensitive to gluten and the like. Earthquake kits work for most other disasters. Other than the Zombie Apocalypse of course. :)

I was in that power outage and had to drive for miles to get gas and a power cord for my cell phone. Just read this great book [1]: http://www.onesecondafter.com/ based on present day facts that can result in a power outage in the entire US. Made me run out and buy a bunch of supplies for doomsday. None of them are Paleo approved.

Survival in the face of adversity is pretty damned Paleo, even if you have to eat Spam and refried beans :) – Nemesis Oct 29 2011 at 0:06
Good point Nemesis. And surviving I will be indeed. Along with a few select members of my immediate family. – Annie Oct 29 2011 at 0:18

I generally order my sardines/mackerel by the case, so I will sometimes have up to 36 cans laying around. We all should keep a few gallons of water handy too.

In So Cal we refer to that as earthquake preparedness, but end of the world scenario is fun too.

Where is your emergency kit? Like you, I live in a high earthquake risk area. We have days of food and water stored, tools, a camping stove and gas canisters. We know our neighbours. I have two bicycles and good shoes. I think we could last a week easily.
