Despite the fact the smartest guy in Paleoworld (Kurt Harris) tells us to avoid the whole cholesterol screening thing,(I call it VAP Theater!) countless cholesterol questions appear on Paleohacks. I realize that it is hard to stand on the tracks while the conventional wisdom locomotive is bearing down on all of us.

I propose a new heart disease test. For the males: Since going paleo are your erections harder, thicker, and more frequent? If yes, I doubt you're developing Cardiovascular disease. If the micro arteries in the penis are getting more pliable, thus the harder erections, I can't fathom how the much larger arteries elsewhere are not doing the same.

Yea this is probably the most pressing reason for me to stay on the boat – Kasra Oct 30 2011 at 18:38

The Quilt 's leptin test is similar .Very high tech. "Look in the mirror". KGH 's CVD test . "Look in the mirror". My test dosn't even require a mirror! – shah78 Oct 30 2011 at 18:56

Oh please no! I never get erections anymore, unless I do something for it. Should I increase carbs? – Korion Oct 30 2011 at 19:03
yeah, waking up with morning wood is a very good way to judge virility – Jeff Oct 30 2011 at 19:40

if I woke up with morning wood, I'd be really worried – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Dec 9 2011 at 5:32

It can be an indicator of a defect in nitric oxide metabolism. Nitric oxide is responsible for dilation of blood vessels and plays a big role in both cardiovascular health and the, erm, love-stick. It can be a substrate problem, simply too little arginine or nitrate from vegetables. Be sure to be getting enough nitrate from vegetables or arginine from food or supplements. It can also be a mechanistic problem and I'm not sure of the biochemistry of that, but it happens.

Stabby, Your answers are always interesting, but reread the question. This is not a "Hack my limp dick" (No pun inteded) It's the opposite. Asked another way "Does a quality erection trump one , two or , several out of normal test score. – shah78 Oct 30 2011 at 19:27

There is no real way to know, cardiovascular health is very complicated with many factors. Too little copper and too much iron can cause cardiovascular disease even if everything else is great. But I clearly do think that the grandiosity of one's pleasure-rod is a good marker for one aspect of cardiovascular health. It doesn't work both ways, though. If limp dick, then probably a problem, but not necessarily if glorious dick then good cardiovascular health. – Stabby Oct 30 2011 at 19:33
But at least you'll die happy. – Glither Oct 30 2011 at 19:37
Stabby, thanks, but I would counter cvd is complicated, cv health is simply.Dosen't good blood flow somewhere in the body imply good blood flow any and everywhere in the body? – shah78 Oct 30 2011 at 20:00

Someone can have great erections but have a heart attack, sometimes simultaneously. Kills the romance. The hypothesis would have to observe that everyone who ever has a heart attack also has impotence. Different arteries have different susceptibilities to atherosclerosis so just because one area is fine doesn't mean the others will. There are only a handful of areas that tend to develop atherosclerosis, and I don't think that the penis is one of them. But like I said, poor erection quality can be a big red flag since it is usually indicative of a nitric oxide deficiency. – Stabby Oct 30 2011 at 21:27

I can't really tell how it applies to paleo eating at the moment. My penis is on an unscheduled meat fast diet right now. Although, I would think that erection problems could be caused by arterial disease, it can be cause by many other things also. Needless to say, if my penis wouldn't work for some reason I would probably think I had all kinds of problems and would try to do my best to eliminate possibilities with the most likely first. Statistically, that would be starting with psychological problems first.

I hope the correct answer to your question is yes.

Your "issue"was one of the main reasons I came up with this question. Tell me how a group of micro blood vessels can stay clear of sludge while big blood vessels can be gummed up. To me its' the same logic of" how can 190,000 years of human history be wrong"? – shah78 Oct 30 2011 at 19:06

Better indication of zinc status (and thus testosterone level) than cardiovascular health. You're way down the road of atherosclerosis by the time it interferes with sexual health.

But i'm not using the "eye test" to prove disease, I'm using the test to indicate a level of health. A high quality erection would indicate we're driving down a road of health. NO? – shah78 Oct 30 2011 at 19:17
Travis, I'm guessing since beef is a decent source of zinc that most paleo peeps have high enough zinc levels. Do you agree? – Geoff Oct 30 2011 at 20:43

Geoff: No, most people coming from the SAD, especially if they were vegetarians of some sort recently have dug a pretty deep hole of zinc deficiency that they need to climb out of. It's actually especially so for women who were chronic exercisers and/or had eating disorders. Refilling the zinc pools can take a year with supplements. As such, it would take several years just eating what you should have been eating all along (meat that isn't in the presence of phytate). – Travis Culp Oct 31 2011 at 3:07
"who were chronic exercisers and/or had eating disorders". I'm not a women, but I was starving myself last year and doing cardio like crazy. I just don't feel like taking yet another supplement. Oysters it is, then. If I can find a decent source. – Korion Oct 31 2011 at 16:31
zinc supplements are linked to increase prostate cancer and alzheimer's. – coprophagous Dec 9 2011 at 5:11

Good question. My erections now are definately fuller and thicker (almost painful) and they feel like they are trying to burst through the skin. Its my opinion though it has a lot to do with my hormones being optimized now through a more healthey diet.

For about the last 7 years I had not been waking up in the morning with erections, I simply thought it was part of the aging process. Prior to 7 years ago I always did. Since going Paleo I have re established this trend.

I think the timing of unprovoked erections are also an indicator of good hormone status. Morning wood = Good!

the young get nice morning wood, the older we get the less wood we get. if you got your morning wood back on the paleo diet lifestyle then you are growing younger and not older. sometimes we try to let science get in the way of what is staring us in the face. i mean come on people, just look in the mirror.

You be dissin my bone? You momma don't have no complaints.

Sorry, saw the word "erections" in the title, could not resist. Got zero emotional/social intelligence, big fan of Jonah Hill movies.

What was the question, exactly?

This is a hard question...

Would someone care to run some rigid, purely scientific, of course, tests with me?
