My wife and I are just starting the process of adoption. Aside from buying breast milk at $2 an ounce that's about $40 - $50 a day! Are there other options aside from cows milk formula for feeding this baby's developing gut?

LLL is probably the best support you can get for breast feeding. I know my mom used them when she was the ONLY breastfeeding woman in the entire (LA) hospital. – Marie Oct 30 2011 at 21:56

Check out Eats on Feets and Google "Milk sharing." You shouldn't have to pay anything but shipping/packaging costs through these agencies.

Well, there's goat milk formula and there's a Weston Price version of baby formula, which is a recipe (and I've heard mixed reviews of it). Honestly, I'm super pro breastfeeding... nursed my oldest for several years and the 19 month old is going strong. Neither of them got a drop of formula. Still, I'd probably opt for formula and get organic if possible rather than mess around with some recipe from the internet. I'd avoid soy formula like the plague, of course. I'd also try, if possible, to buy some breast milk, or see if there's a mom in your area with an oversupply issue who'd be willing to pump for you for a while, maybe in exchange for babysitting services or something. Even if your little one could get some breast milk for a little while, that would be better than nothing.

And oh, by the way, congratulations on your impending parenthood!

There is a milk sharing network that was created by some moms on Facebook. Its called HM4HB - Human Milk for Human Babies. http://www.hm4hb.net/

As others have said. Free is an option. We have this in our area. Look for an attachment parenting group. This will get you to the breast milk.

You might want to contact Angelo from Latest in Paleo. His wife had a baby earlier this year and they ended up using a combination of methods to make sure the little one had enough food--from donor milk to using a Weston A. Price Foundation recipe (or two). He might have some suggestions for you.
