Sinus infections would include mostly runny nose (lots of blowing nose). Should one keep blowing their nose, or let it run?

Also it includes waking up with a clogged/stuffed nose.

What would help this or cure this?

Neti Pots are the bomb diggity.

Not if yo have a deviated septum. They just drain down the back of my throat. Yuck. – Heather Oct 31 2011 at 20:37
I love neti pots, but my honey also has a deviated septum and can't use it...saves me from misery every time though! – Rogue Nutritionist Nov 1 2011 at 4:40
Effective, yes. But after reading this they kind of freak me out npr.org/blogs/health/2011/12/19/143960631/… – Laura Jan 26 2012 at 19:38

First, it's important to distinguish a stuffy/runny nose from a sinus infection. They are 2 very different things and if you reach the point of bacterial infection you may need antibiotics. Second, I had lifelong sneezing with stuffy nose and nasal drip and was diagnosed with vasomotor rhinitis. Imagine my surprise when I went primal at age 64 and 2 weeks later had NO SYMPTOMS! Turned out to be wheat, because after a few months I caved and had some treats containing wheat and all my respiratory symptoms came right back, then disappeared when I went back to primal. I still have a few reactions to blooming trees, but that's once or twice per year as opposed to 60 years straight.

I found I was allergic to dust mites and got the cases for my mattress and pillows. I also vacumed under the bed and dusted real good and now keep everything pretty clean. It really helped me.

Oil pulling, which the theory goes replicates our paleo ancestors mastication of animal fats. Works for me (and bees cappings if you know a bee-keeper).

Why not just eat animal fat? No need to replicate anything... – Cody Oct 31 2011 at 21:18

I feel guilty when I get sinusitis, as though I haven't tried hard enough. But I think the guilt is misplaced, as even people in paleo times seem to have got infections ...

Oh my goodness, don't feel guilty! If it's bacterial, get help because Grok would have died. If not, something's irritating your system and you need to figure out if it's in the air or in your food. You're not doing anything wrong either way, but life will be more comfortable if you can identify the major suspects and do informal testing. – Nance Nov 15 2011 at 20:53
Yeah on that note, the bacteria we catch these days is probably a lot more resistant than the bacteria grok caught. Sinusitis sucks and I'm here looking for paleo cure, but it looks like one of those things that even Paleo can't avoid. – Joy Jan 24 2012 at 16:20

Some people have incorporated xylitol in their nasal irrigation solution to help fight infection.

I am just getting over a horrendously nasty bout of a sinus infection myself and suffered for a week before I relented and went on antibiotics. Doing the paleo diet for the past 3 months and being gluten-free, grain & legume free did nothing to help prevent or alleviate any symptoms, so quite a disappointment. I too am looking for answers in the paleo world. The only possible remaining issue might be dairy. I eat butter, some cheese (unpasteurized), and heavy cream in my coffee. But maybe it's unrealistic for paleo-diet to be a cure-all for everything, especially bacterial infections. Or maybe I haven't been on the paleo diet long enough to reap the benefits. (I also fly on a regular basis and it seems that every time I go on a trip, I pick up something.) If anyone out there has an answer or solution, I'd love to hear it.

Re. flying. Some people say the air vents are like a direct injection of whatever's floating around the plane, but it's hard to say. They've got HEPA filters, but you don't know how well they're maintained. Other than that proper biosafety (wash hands well, be careful touching things, avoid obviously sick people, etc). Even then, you're still in close proximity to hundreds of people, it's tough. Subjectively, I've done a lot better after Paleo personally (flying cross country). Could be luck of the draw though. – James Nov 15 2011 at 16:13
