Do you know or have heard of anyone developing a serious, life-threatening chronic disease even though they were eating a Paleo diet?
I'm hoping the answer is no and that everyone on Paleo lives a long and healthy life :)

Even if such a person existed, it wouldn't prove much. People have individual strengths and vulnerabilities, and although diet can cause a lot of problems, and probably cure a few, no dietary regimen can be a prophylactic against all disease. Despite all precautions, people can get hit by disease just like they can get hit by a bus or a piece of falling satellite. Large populations with differing diets are better for inferring things about health and diet, but obviously even large studies suffer from uncontrolled variables. |

Mercy. I know of no evidence that paleo delivers us from presence in time and space. Nobody us getting out of this alive. Plenty of evidence that smart lifestyle choices can and do extend healthy longevity. Genetics are a big factor as well, but even that's not beyond our reach, because smart lifestyle choices foster pro-longevity gene expression. |

My mother had stage 0 melanoma. A militant vegan relative told her it was because of the paleo diet. We all thought that was ridiculous. She is in her fifties and has been eating paleo for only a few years. She also suffered from bad sunburns as a child and smoked. Who knows, it could have been stage 2 on another diet? |

None of us can truly be Paleolithic. We are exposed to outside pollution (light, noise, chemical, etc.), pesticides, insecticides, plastics, household cleaners, electromagnetic radiation, etc even if we live as best we can in our homes. The depletion of minerals in soil and drinking water (in industrial countries to keep the pipes better), also plays a role. We also have so many generations of ancestors who did not eat in Paleo-inspired fashion and we have inherited those genes (for better, or for worse). Our genes are varied. All we can hope/hypothesize is to delay, reduce, and (in the best case situation prevent) chronic diseases of civilization - heart disease, obesity, metabolic syndrome/insulin issues, autoimmune, inflammation, etc. There are people that have benefited on ancestral diets by the evidence in biomarkers in medical testing. Some people will get better and faster results than others. Some people prior to an ancestral approach have damage beyond the point of no return and cannot get the ideal recovery they want. For some doing an ancestral-inspired intervention will alleviate symptoms and diseases better than other approaches but still only do "damage control." But know one can know if they will benefit until they try it for at least 30 days! Certain factors may not improve until months or even a year later! Ultimately each person has to test 1 variable at a time for about 2-3 weeks (exception, gluten often takes a month or longer to see), and adjust to their individual situation. Some people can tolerate different thresholds of food. For some altering one or more of these factors may make a difference: 1) gluten 2) fructose 3) dairy - lactose, casein, etc. 4) eggs 5) nightshades 6) coconut 7) starches - yams, potatoes, plantains, etc. (even small amounts of white rice!) 8) nuts and seeds 9) cooked vs. raw vegetables 10) probiotics - fermented vegetables and/or dairy 11) carbs, fats, and protein 12) supplementation Faileo (incorrectly done Paleo) usually stems from not titrating various factors to the individual, including the 12 mentioned above. Melissa's post is enlightening here: http://huntgatherlove.com/content/are-you-faileo-diet The Jaminets also discuss it in their Perfect Health Diet book. |

Unfortunately Paleo is not the gift of immortality, it's not going to stop absolutely everybody from getting absolutely every disease. Are there people "on paleo" who are still going to get cancer, heart disease, etc.? Of course! We are all still human and there are other factors like genetics and environment to consider. All you can do is keep learning, keep questioning and keep listening to your body. By eating this way you are improving your chances of not getting degenerative diseases, not eradicating them |

Similar to what Rose and Melissa said... even if somebody "developed a disease while eating Paleo"... how could you ever know if eating Paleo caused it or if it was simply a matter a time due to previous lifestyle/dietary choices. For example: I eat Paleo. I have some concerns about my personal health. But I ate absolute trash growing up as a kid. I was a product of the highly misguided 1980s. Also, I was fed soy formula from birth. Not until I turned 30 years old did I do a 180 with my diet. Even if I drop dead tomorrow, would it really be fair to say that it was because I was eating "Paleo"? |

I developed an eating disorder while on paleo. I probably had a mental predisposition to it though, and my strictness when beginning paleo kind of set it off. I was technically eating paleo, just a very low-calorie version and probably not enough fats (although I thought I was getting enough...) Slowly recovering now though! |

great question! I think answers to this question prove whether any chronic diseases are anything besides systematic disfunctions solely caused by processed food. I used to never really go 6 months without getting at least strept throat, usually mono. Since Paleo I just haven gotten sick besides a bug that everyone in campus was getting. But that bug barely effected me compared to other people. ...I also haven't thrown up once since Paleo. |

I hope not. I went back to eating meat and thanks to hunting season, it's mostly venison. |
