Well, there's something going around (Irving, TX) and several people around me are sick. For me, I have the sniffles, and a cough (regularly coughing up phlegm). I wasn't too worried about it, but now I'm on the third week. So, after some thought, I realized that 3 weeks ago was when I started incorporating potatoes back in the diet regularly, BUT, I fry them in Coconut oil, which I don't normally use.

General Thoughts? Advice?

It's unconnected to potatoes. – Jay Nov 2 2011 at 2:26

I'm also thinking coincidence. Do you use a neti pot? I've found it to be really helpful during cold & flu season!

I tried a neti pot once...It made me fairly uncomfortable :-) Might be worth another shot though! – Ben Nov 1 2011 at 18:54
Ben - the neti-pots are a pretty weird thing to get used to for sure, but they give me so much relief now when I have a head cold - definitely worth getting past the uncomfortable feeling! – Thumper Nov 1 2011 at 18:59
Neti pots are amazing. I used to get seasonal sinus infections, but I never do anymore with that and gargling hydrogen pyroxide (I find it works better than warm salt water, heh.) – affine Nov 1 2011 at 22:38
Yeah they aren't fun to use, but so worth it! I learned the hard way that you can't blow your nose like crazy after using it (and it is extremely tempting), or lay down for a few hours after- my ears got really clogged up from that :( – Jules K Nov 2 2011 at 13:00

Its probably just a coincidence, there is no mechanism for potatoes and coconut oil to give you the sniffles or a cough as far as I know.

Well, others may disagree but I crave citrus when I'm sick and it always seems to help. My taste changes, though, because when healthy I prefer grapefruit but when sick I prefer a sweet orange. I also like ginger drinks if my stomach is unhappy. I also like bland foods such as a sweet potato with butter or a banana.

I just saw this relevant article at [everyday paleo](everydaypaleo.com/2011/10/31/…). – Nance Nov 1 2011 at 19:50

Likely just a coincidence, but perhaps cut them out again and see if that helps?? I find self-experimentation is the only way to figure this type of stuff out. Good luck...and feel better!
