I'm just wondering about this because I've been making an effort to eat my meals in a leisurely fashion as I had a lifelong tendency to inhale my food. It can now take an hour or so to eat my daily meal (salad, main dish, fruit) so I'm wondering whether the "1 hour" glucose measurement milestone is usually taken after the beginning of the meal or the end?

What do others do?

Dr. Bernstein (Bernstein Diabetes Solution) advises that you test right before you begin eating and 1 hour after that (even if you are still eating) and then 2 hours after that, if you are doing a second test. This is inconvenient as you may need to wash your hands before testing, depending on the meal.

I wait until I am done eating and then begin timing.

Thanks! For curiosity's sake, I tried both today and it didn't make a lot of difference but, so far, I don't seem to have BG issues for which I am thankful. – Nance Nov 1 2011 at 22:25
