Can someone please tell me why I have such a bad headache the day after I had 85% dark chocolate?

It took me many years of denial before I was finally able to accept the fact that I am allergic to chocolate...very sad, but vey true...I get headaches every time, and still want more...I gave it up altogether and it's been great for me on many levels. |

Same here with headaches the next day after Choc! I think it's the Tannins/Phenols. It diesn't take much chocolate for me. 1 Choc chip cookie will do it. I even tried some bakers choc unsweetned, as I am on the anit candida diet, guess what? Next day, Bamo! Headache. Red Wine same thing, Coffee too. It's like a minefield out there. |

I have to be careful, too. A little bit seems to go a long way. I also break out around my jawline if I eat too much chocolate. I don't know if it's specifically the sugar or not - I typically eat 85 or 90% dark chocolate, so it's not as though there is tons of sugar in that. But yeah, I can't explain it, I just know that for lots of people, chocolate is a headache trigger. |

Don't know about the migraines, however my therapist asked me to not eat cacao and oranges anymore bc it contains a chemical that blocks the gallbladder for days even in the smallest amount. Making it hard to detox properly. I used to love unsweetened raw cacao roasted cauliflower:( |

Could just be a caffiene withdrawal thing, but not knowing how much you consume otherwise this is just a suggestion. I get minor headaches if I don't get at least a little a day, usually in the form of tea and/or my beloved 100% dark. |

I had been STRICTLY paleo for over two months before I sat for the Dec. 3 LSAT (law school entrance exam) so every time I was tempted to cheat, I thought "I'm doing this for mental clarity". Well, night before I had one square of organic dark chocolate thinking it'd be a nice treat. Woke up feeling so hungover, I couldn't do well on the exam, at all! I had to cancel my score and need to take it again in February. I obviously had a reaction after the chocolate had been eliminated for so long. :( |

theobromine is a neurotoxin. It is contained in dark chocolate. |

chocolate is a stimulant. coffee and tea, same thing. i was always sensitive to all of them, but especially craved chocolate. since being paleo, i feel like ive taken some nasty illegal stimulant drug if i touch any of the stuff. no carbs have made me super sensitve to them. my reasoning is, anything that you eat that is addictive, or that causes you to crave more the more you eat, ie, satisfaction levels are inversely proportional to amount eaten, is a bad thing. good, paleo, natural food isnt like that. just because cacao grows naturally doesnt mean you should eat it. |

Thank you for this question. I just consumed 85% dark chocolate yesterday. All yesterday night I had a headache which has continued this morning. The only thing I changed was eating the dark chocolate for the first time in many months. It obviously doesn't agree with me anymore. It's amazing how your body responds to rejecting various foods after being strict paleo for awhile. I guess no more chocolate for me, it's just not worth the throbbbing headaches. :( |

I think it can be hard to know for sure if it is a headache trigger or not. I get migraines, and I've come to realize that what happens for me is: early signs of migraine -> desire to eat chocolate -> eat chocolate -> migraine. it's not a trigger, but cravings for it (and therefore often eating it) are part of the migraine development. |

Chocolate has given me headaches for many years and I rarely eat it now. I do not feel allergic to chocolate, there is something contained in the chocolate which triggers it off, as highlighted by many postings above. I used to love chocolate digestive biscuits but I cant anymore. Actually occasionally i will eat a yorkie bar or even an Easter egg but I dont touch chocolate drinks ever, Cocoa included, and chocolate cake is off the menu for me. It is kind of weird when it is someones birthday and they give you a slice of chocolate cake you must reject. you feel so rotten! Living in a hot country these days actually staves off a desire to eat chocolate and when i drink Avocado drink for example, i ask the seller not to add the customary chocolate sauce to it. Oranges have a similar impact on me, the acid from the citrus fruit. I do not eat Oranges often but I find their vitamin c ingredients important to help me recover ill health. They are also great to quench a thirst. When it comes to ice cream, I stay with Vanilla or Strawberry. |
