My stomach feels incredibly bloated from all of the PWO cramming that the IF regimen calls for. This is what I've eaten in the past hour:

18:05: 10g. BCAA in pill form. 18:20: Begun workout. Between exercises consumed 106g. banana protein powder mix (~1:1 ratio by weight). 19:05: 194g. of apple, 336g. mixed twenty-vegetable salad, 648g. lamb shank, 186. coconut milk with protein powder (~3:2 ratio by weight). Took in about half a glass (~150ml.) water due to lamb's spiciness.

What am I doing wrong here?

I'm getting bloated just reading about it. – Annie Nov 2 2011 at 4:17
There are twenty different vegetables in your salad? – Kasra Nov 2 2011 at 4:50

^ Yep. I'm lucky enough to have a cousin who is an avid nutritionist and knife expert. He chops up a few kilos of this salad every weekend. – Adulescens Appetens Nov 2 2011 at 4:54

One of the causes of bloating is drastic changes in diet. Probably, the bacteria in your digestive tract that are responsible for aiding the breakdown of food have not had time to adapt to your new dietary regimen.

Time heals all wounds, and bloating is one of them. Just keep at it for a few more weeks, and you should start gradually feeling better. If your symptoms don't improve, then you may have an actual issue with one the foods you're eating (my first guess would be the protein powders.)

I think I've found the culprit. The protein powder I was using has carrageenan added, which seems to cause a number of digestive issues. – Adulescens Appetens Nov 3 2011 at 3:13
^ God I once had coconut milk with carrageenan and guar gum in it and I felt terrible for two days. – Kasra Nov 3 2011 at 3:20

I agree with San Diego Dude... I find Whey protein can have some odd effects with me also.... it might be the carageenan but i'd make sure that you're not taking in protein powder with flavors added (usually if there is flavor added, the sweetener in the powder causes bloat and digestive problems)....a lot of sweeteners that are used in these powders- agave nectar, stevia, sugar alcohols, etc., can cause lots of digestive upset because they are not as easily broken down (even if agave and stevia are natural)... and sugar alcohols are almost 100% of the time NOT tolerated well by the body...

I would try finding an all natural powder- jarrow makes an all natural (no flavor, and very little to no additive) whey protein powder....flavorless= tasting like crap but you can add it successfully to coffee (and hot to warm beverage) and the taste is actually bearable...There are other non-dairy based protein powders out there- I would look at brown rice protein powder.... a good brand is sun warrior....it's a nutritionally sound, no additive powder that you can find at whole foods and any natural health store. I'm not sure how many carbs (outside of regular paleo foods) you are intaking but one serving is around 5 grams carbs...it's got the highest amount of protein of any non-dairy and non-soy powder available and it's whole-grain, sprouted and vegan....it also might give you an extra shot of fiber which can help fix the bloat... i'd try some of this and chase it with a bit of water...Hope this helps!

I should mention that you can find brown rice protein powder at natural foods/health stores, sun warrior, I think you have to get online specifically but check around... – midnight Nov 15 2011 at 15:02

Whey protein can have GI effect for most people sensitive to diary...might want to look at other forms of protein.
