Just wondering if anyone has gone a day or two eating just coconut oil and water? What effects could it have on your body/metabolism? Would it be worth a try to kick-start fat burning?

While we are on the topic, what do any of you think about coconut butter?!

Thanks!

One day without Eating is not a big deal. Our metabolism should always be ready to deal with 24 hours with no calories. Having some coconut oil will be even easier than fasting. – ben61820 Nov 2 2011 at 14:25

I set out once to do an entire week on coconut oil...I ended up feeling nauseous constantly, and even vomited...I ended up doing several days...this was back when I had a very punishing attitude towards my body, I love intermittent fasting now, and listen to and respect my body too much to fast for long periods of time anymore..I think coconut oil would be a nice tool for easing into intermittent fasting though. Coconut butter has a lot of fiber, so would likely stimulate hunger a lot more than a pure fat.

I've done something similar on a number of occasions.

Instead of just water, however, I'll usually make sure to have a nice batch of broth cooked up.

I'll drink cold water and warm broth through the day, and, if I start to get a real severe gnawing hunger, I'll pop a spoonful of coconut oil mixed with a little coconut butter (and maybe a little cinnamon and sea salt). The coconut oil/butter mix always kicks the hunger down several notches and I'm fine to go back to water/broth for the rest of the day.

If I start the fast the night before (dinner around 8-9pm), fast overnight, wake up around 9am, go through the day with light activity (chores around the house, walking, riding my bike), back to bed at 10-11pm, and then awake again at 9am, that puts me right at 36hrs. At this point, I'll usually have something "easy" to digest, like a few eggs cooked in animal fat or a fruit & veg smoothie with some protein powder. At this point, I'll just roll right back into my regular food and activity routine.

Coconut oil contain medium chain triglycerides that the liver easily turns into ketones. These will be used to feed the brain instead of glucose. Muscle break down during fasting is primarily for making glucose to feed the brain. Eating coconut oil, or a small amount of protein, or even a small amount of carbs will spare your muscles during the fast. You will still lose fat as your bodily stores will be used for calories.

Needs during fasting: Glucose for brain: can be made from coconut oil, dietry/bodily protein or directly with carbs. Fuel: from bodily fat.

You'd start catabolizing muscle as soon as you ran out of liver glycogen. This would be somewhere around the 20-24 hour mark (assuming that you topped it off right before you started).

A better idea would be a steak-only fast.

So you're not a fan of self-induced/intentional autophagy? – Beth-WeightMaven Nov 3 2011 at 12:35

Not at all; one of the few things that I disagree with Paul Jaminet about is that it's a beneficial process. I'd rather give my body all the nutrients it needs and let it decide which cells are ripe for apoptosis and which aren't. – Travis Culp Nov 3 2011 at 17:04
Lovin' that idea! – San Diego Dude Nov 10 2011 at 7:09
Steak-only would get expensive no? – gimmeMoreLiver Nov 10 2011 at 8:45

Even if you were right Travis (and I am pretty sure you are wrong based on the fasting info I've read from Martin Berkhan sp? and Brad Pilon), the muscle will come back pretty quickly once food is eaten. Poeple who are in casts and have their muscles shrink up get every ounce of muscle back when the cast comes off. And from what I've read, stimulus from activity is more important to muscle growth/maintenance and trumps nutritional status unless one is fasting for much longer than 24 hours. And the fatter one is, the less risk there is. -1 – Cody Nov 10 2011 at 14:15

When I played around with it, I didn't find coconut oil very satisfying at a tablespoon a pop.

Coconut milk is mostly fat and would probably be more satisfying in a cup of tea or coffee. – Cody Nov 10 2011 at 14:17
Yah, but the original question was on Coconut oil and not coconut milk. – James Nov 10 2011 at 23:56

Not sure about the coconut oil fast, but I've done the chicken broth fast; chicken broth is surprisingly satisfying. I've also done a four day soda water/lemon juice fast, using the Smooth Move tea every afternoon and evening, that was interesting to say the least.

Currently doing a veggie juice fast with coconut oil. Beginning Day 4 and I have lost 6 pounds and the normal fasting crisis days 1 and 2 were significantly reduced. I think the coconut oil absolutely helps with the brain energy and also helps with the fat laden toxins.

I've done coconut oil fast for 8 days. And to be honest, I've never felt greater than during the 4-8 days fasting. The energy level was UP, skin was clear, I wouldn't say I lost muscle mass too much. The weights I used to lift in the gym I lifted also on the 8th day. Since am giving group fitness classes I didn't have the choice to take time off from physical work during fasting. I lost 7kg during these days. Think it's a great way to boost up ur energy levels plus clean ur body from all the wastes. Planning another fast on coming days;)

oil will always stimulate our digestive system very much. When stomach gets oil it will tel you that it need some food to get over with this oil. Nothing will make you more hungry then oil fasting or you will vomit a the oil sometimes.

Always interesting an surprising to read the things people believe to be true. My recommendation is to try everything for yourself 99.999% of the people who post an answer on any topic have no idea what they are talking about. They read and article on google and that formed 100% of their knowledge base.

That said ignore 99.999% of what people have said here or anywhere for that matter. Give it a shot and KNOW the answer 100%.
