I like to get a gourmet ciabatta roll once in a while made from "low-protein flour." Yay or nay?

Once in a while if you are in good health is a yay. I'm not sure if low or high protein matters, yes the bad part is in the protein, but it's not like it's no protein flour. – Stabby Nov 3 2011 at 19:41
Up-votes for all the 'yays'. – Matt Nov 3 2011 at 21:41
i think the low-protein was important since gluten is a protein and, therefore, bread containing low protein would contain less gluten – mloster Nov 4 2011 at 5:17

Yay. Unless you have allergies or other issues you can probably eat anything “once in a while” without too much worry. I try to be fairly strict at home so when I do go to a restaurant or somebody’s house I have more room to maneuver.

Yay. My last guilty pleasure was a two week binge on drugs and nutella, so your thing is pretty healthy by comparison.

Some wouldn't separate nutella from the drugs category. – Travis Culp Nov 3 2011 at 20:52
Especially when you dunk apple slices in it. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm :) – Nemesis Nov 4 2011 at 0:24

Care to elaborate? I'm assuming you simply thing gluten should be 100% avoided at all times. – dorchid11 Nov 3 2011 at 20:06

I do believe too that gluten should be avoided at all times. Gluten antibodies can stay in the body for 6 months, while they can leave the gut damaged for up to 2 weeks (info from Robb Wolf). If you have to cheat, cheat with some rice, or white potatoes, or maybe a corn knob. But I too would suggest to stay off gluten. – Eugenia Nov 3 2011 at 20:18

Since when are rice and potatoes considered cheating? – Kasra Nov 3 2011 at 20:48

Rice is a grain. I don't eat rice or potatoes. Ive eaten rice once as a cheat and couldn't pooh for like 4 days. – Jo T Nov 3 2011 at 20:54
yeah i agree with Eugenia. there's no real dosage curve to gluten. i'd try making your own with potato, tapioca, or rice flour or a combination of them. if you cheat, just don't cheat with gluten. – mloster Nov 4 2011 at 4:19

Yay. I think if you've got solid health and good digestion, eating bread every once in a while isn't going to do any lasting damage. However, if you know this is a trigger food (just makes you want more and more) or if you get headaches, stomach aches, or skin issues after eating it, then it's a nay.

I think it totally depends on your body's response. If you don't notice an adverse reaction, then I would say just fully give yourself permission to enjoy it once in a while sans the side of guilt. If, however, you do have a reaction to the gluten, you'll just need to weigh it out for yourself if a yummy but fleeting taste in your mouth is worth it...but I would still say do it without the guilt or not at all.

Since it's a 'cheat', it's obviously a nay to begin with. But if it's something that you enjoy sparingly, it's not going to be that big of a deal as long as you're healthy

For me, a big 'nay,' but then, my cheats are almost exclusively fresh fruit.
