Are they healthy?

Are organic bananas better than non-organic? Especially if the peel is edible?

Do the peels have lots of pesticides on them?

What else could I use the peels for, if not eaten?

Sorry, but my first thought was, "Why would you want to?" I guess I should stifle my inappropriate sense of humor and take a bite. Kewpie set me straight below and if you like them, go for it. I agree you should stick with organics and scrub them good though. – Nance Nov 3 2011 at 23:07
Curious as to which cultures eat banana peel? – Lady_Arwen Nov 4 2011 at 0:31
I am, I am, which cultures eat them? – Nance Nov 4 2011 at 1:22
You could always try smoking them, there was a rumor about that being a thrill, when I was a teenager. HAHA – Senneth Nov 4 2011 at 16:38

Yes they are edible, and yes they are healthy. I would opt for organic if you want to eat them to avoid the pesticides.

If you don't want to eat them you can compost them.

"Edible" as in (i) you won't die if you eat one or "edible" as in (ii) they have nutritional value AND don't cause damage to internal organs even after repeated ingestion? I'm confident someone has eaten a banana peel and lived to tell the tale but think you would have to provide some evidence if, by edible, you mean good to eat – Jay Nov 4 2011 at 17:35
Edible as in people in other cultures commonly eat them. reference.com/browse/banana+peel – Kewpie Nov 4 2011 at 21:05

Hellfire, I sure wouldn't. Even monkeys peel them, don't they?

If you eat one, please video it and post a link to it here. :)

I've seen chimps and gorillas eat the peels in zoos. I don't know if some of our more distant cousins, the monkeys, eat them. – Chickenosaurus Rex Nov 3 2011 at 23:19
Most primates eat the peel. – Kewpie Nov 4 2011 at 21:25
Monkey see, monkey do - or human see monkey, human do??!! – Lady_Arwen Nov 5 2011 at 14:15

Never ever ever eat non-organic banana peel! The pesticide used on bananas is incredibly intense and causes prostate cancer.

Some argue that even the banana itself sometimes still contains some of the pesticide. Go organic.

I remember the someone asking Robb Wolf this question in a pod cast a while back, if memory serves (and I believe it does) is the solution was that they have toxic levels of something in them... but I wish I could be more exact.

Doesn't sound so yummy. You can use them to trip people. Some fruit skin works great as face mask though

It's very difficult to eat banana peels. The one time I did it, it gave me gas. I did it because I read that they are high in norepinephrine. Didn't do much for me.

I'm all for trying to eat the "garbage" parts of food (carrot and cauliflower greens, kale stems..) but I think banana peels are just too much/not worth it.
