I love cheese. When I first started eating primal foods, cheese was one of my snacks that was awesome, because of the lack of carbs. Each week I would buy a 2-pound block of cheese and slice it up to eat that week (along with others in the house).

These past two weeks, however (after two months primal), every time I take a bite, it just tastes bad. I have tried multiple brands from multiple stores, from colby jack (my usual), to monterey jack, to cheddar, to babybel, but they all are just bad. I don't even finish chewing what I bite off; I end up spitting it out into the trash.

I do pretty well with dairy. I still drink milk in my tea/coffee. I eat low carb yogurt everyday just about. I'm fine with those, but the cheese is just suddenly gross-tasting.

Anyone have this happen to them, or know why it might be happening?

There was about a week or two where I had no cheese, then it was two weeks ago again when I tried it, and suddenly didn't like it.

Maybe it has something to do with the bacteria in cheese, like you have too much of that kind in your gut right now, so its your gut's way of saying hold off. – Senneth Nov 4 2011 at 16:28

Eat nothing but cheese every day for 30 days and see how you look, feel and perform. I guarantee that you will become cheese adapted. Signs of cheese adaptation: Sudden affection for Roger Federer and all things Swiss; random mooing; purchase of a fondue pot. – Dave S. Nov 4 2011 at 18:12
This is fascinating. I have no idea. I kinda wish I could be similarly afflicted. Not to make light of your plight but I love cheese way too much. – Shari Bambino Nov 4 2011 at 18:25
This is EXACTLY what happened to me in my third/fourth week of pregnancy, not only did it disgust me but if I tried to force the issue my body would literally not allow me to swallow it. The worst part? I had lots of delicious cheeses in the fridge that have since gone bad :( – lindsey Nov 4 2011 at 19:11

Dave S. Are you a specialist in the field? I am thinking of writing my PhD in the enzymes associated with late onset cheese adoption. Maybe we could knock out a few ideas? +1 for the fantastic answer! – peter Nov 4 2011 at 20:35

Processed foods aside, I'm of the opinion that our bodies crave foods that contain the minerals/nutrients it currently needs. Perhaps you are "topped up" on whatever need that the cheese was satisfying.

this has happened to me with lots of things, most recently beer. I went from loving all kinds to being repulsed by all. Nothings wrong just trust in your body and what it wants.

When I withdrew from my dependence on wheat and refined sugars, my taste buds woke up and many of my food preferences shifted. For one thing, the wheat/sugar things don't taste as good as I remember. (I know, you're asking how I know and I blew it in September, OK?)

Most foods stayed in their original column (like, neutral, dislike) but a few things REALLY changed. A good plum tasted better than any dessert I'd ever had. Eggs started having flavor. Meat became sweet, which I'd never sensed before. Celery had always been unflavored and needed something, but now it has a distinct flavor by itself.

The list goes on, but that's my hypothesis for what you're experiencing.

I think my best guess is something about like this. Either my food preferences have just changed because of the different intake I have, or maybe my body is just telling me to throw it out, that I don't need it. Or maybe it's all really spoiled :) Thank you for your response, Nance. – Wondering Nov 5 2011 at 8:07

Because it is cheesy! now seriously I do have cheese but not that often and not that much: I have experienced in the past that lots of cheese is suboptimal for my health. Besides, cheese is not paleo at all, Mark Sisson notwithstanding...

Nothing you eat is actually paleo... – Dave S. Nov 4 2011 at 19:38

Maybe you're lucky. I still love cheese (last I checked), but it's bad for me. Binds me up something awful. Turns my colon into a logjam. But I'm total carnivore, zero fiber, so I don't know if that applies.

David, your last couple of answers have been gold. – peter Nov 4 2011 at 20:37

Wow! The same thing happened to me, but specifically with the Babybel brand. The little wheels of cheese tasted metallic and spoiled. It was so bad I tossed all of it in the garbage.

I do not have the bad taste issue with artisan, expensive cheeses like a nice Parmesan Reggiano, real pulled Mozzarella, or Old Dubliner Cheddar cheese. These cheeses are strong, but not metallic or spoiled on my pallet. Not sure why....

I was going to say something similar. As a kid, I loved all cheese, but as I grew up and became accustomed to real, quality cheeses, stomaching generic grocery store brands is difficult. If Babybel is your idea of what cheese is, be happy you no longer like it and start exploring the artisan cheese market. – WyldKard Nov 4 2011 at 18:59
I haven't tried the expensive artisan cheeses, mainly because whatever I get has to pass the kid test as well, because it goes in their lunchboxes also. For what it's worth, I only had the babybel a couple of times, but I do normally stick with cheddar, colby, monterey jack, and the other "normal" or "regular" cheeses you might see in the grocery. Maybe I'll try out some of the artisan cheeses and/or see if Costco has any of this Kerrygold I keep hearing about. Thanks to both of you for your responses. :) – Wondering Nov 5 2011 at 8:03

As one's body becomes healthier it can discover that certain foods may not be needed, one's ability to taste can change as well. The body is smarter than the mind. There are many foods I used to enjoy that now are just meh. Perhaps your body is indicating that it no longer needs cheese atm and maybe it needs something else, perhaps some subtle cravings are present or there is something lacking in the diet (vitamins/minerals). I wouldn't be too concerned just don't eat cheese for a few weeks, let your body go through whatever adjustments it needs to then you can always try reintroducing cheeses again and see what happens. Another possibility is that your association with cheese was more mental than physical.

I think it's quite normal to go through periods of eating one thing and it tasting great to periods of not liking it. Keep in mind that switching between eating different things is normally a good thing. You don't want to rely too much on one food for your nutrition.

Personally I have periods of times where eggs are absolutely the last thing I want to eat even though I absolutely love them. And periods where I absolutely don't want any milk even though I drink a lot of it. The same goes with many other foods I enjoy.

Humans, our environment, and diet once were very dynamic and changing things. We roamed about the earth eating different things we came across. There is no reason to believe that has changed.

The same paradigm fits other things in our lives as well, sometimes you want to be outside, sometimes you want to sleep more than usual, sometimes you drink more water than normal, sometimes you have more sex than typical, sometimes you just want to relax. Trying to maintain stasis day in and day out when you are a dynamic creature in my opinion is a fatal flaw.

Are we talking all cheese here, or just one brand that you've always liked and stuck with? There's always the possibility that the manufacturer of your chosen cheese - if you do just have a favourite - have changed things their end and you no longer find it as palatable as before.

Just a thought.

Well, I normally have been getting some store brands (but without the "cellulose added" crap), so I tried other brands, and other types of cheese as well, in case I had just gotten a bad batch, but they ALL taste bad now. shrugs Ah well. – Wondering Nov 5 2011 at 8:00
