I heard you can't "catch up on sleep". Is that true?

I know I should probably go to bed when it gets dark or at latest 10:00-10:30, but often times I find myself getting many things done past that hour, because it is quiet and peaceful, and I'm an artist - my creative mind likes to work in the wee hours of the night. :P

When going to bed late, is there a way to make sure I'm getting restful sleep, or did I miss out on it?

What can I do (if going to bed early were not an option)?

Try to sleep as regularly as possible. Some people claim 6 hours are enough, once your body got used to that rythm (i.e. go to bed same time, wake up same time) and as long as you have a healthy lifestyle with a least a little sport/walking each day. I try that, and then nap 25 minutes during the day. Naps are super healthy for you!

Further, most people have a sleepcycle of 85-95 minutes. Try to wake up at the end of a cycle, not in between. Thus, try to sleep 3 hours (not 3:30), 4 and 1/2 hours, 6 hours, 7 1/2 hours and so on. My sleep cycle is a bit below 90 minutes, so I actually try toget 5 hours and 45 minutes of sleep each night.

I do not know if going to bed late is categorically bad for you (it is for kids/teens!), I think its worse though if you don't have a rythm.

I tend to agree. Much like ghrelin is a hormone that makes uses feel ready for a meal when we are already having meals at a certain time, there should also be something in our body that gets use to go to sleep or rest at a certain time. Just my guess. – Jonas Nov 4 2011 at 11:27

Sleep in the darkest place possible. Use light-blocking curtains, put a pillow or towel over your head, or both.

don't put a pillow on your head if that means it covers mouth/nose. I like to put a black t-shirt just over my eyes, when having to sleep with light. – Esuus Nov 4 2011 at 11:21

An eye mask works great for me. – Dragonfly Nov 4 2011 at 11:47

I use an eye mask too on occasion, but make sure you get one that doesn't put pressure on your eyes. – Stephanie H. Nov 4 2011 at 14:42
Stephanie - When you say get one that doesn't put pressure on your eyes, just how much pressure are we talking? I use an eye mask sometimes and it puts some pressure on my eyes, but it's not a lot... does even some pressure cause problems? – Esther Nov 4 2011 at 18:36

I listen to hypnosis apps that I downloaded to my iphone, there are lots. I personally love the Andrew Marr ones, literally now put me into a really deep sleep without fail. I've also been a lot calmer during the day too since I started listening to them, I have been using them for about a year now. They are really cheap too, just make sure when your headphones are in, you place the wire above your head so you don't strangle yourself in your sleep, although that would definitely ensure a deep sleep....

"... although that would definitely ensure a deep sleep..." <--haha. Sure would. Hehe, sometimes I'll listen to relaxing yoga music, or ambient space music. :) – Esther Nov 4 2011 at 18:38

Hypnosis apps are good. I listened to them for a while. I got better sleep. Later i moved on to a relaxation technique. it's quite simple. When i'm in bed i start relaxing from face (forehead, eyebrows, lips, etc) gradually to toes. i do this twice and then i'm left feeling like a log i focus on my breathing and never have i known when i fall alseep

I bought Tranquileyes Quartz Goggles, which completely block the light and aren't too uncomfortable to wear. Still, I suspect that our bodies are smarter than that. I, too, need to sleep earlier.

I had to get up 3 hours early today to take my grandkid to catch a bus for the state cross-country meet.

Like an idiot, I went back to bed and work up feeling HORRIBLE. For me, it works much better to just stay up and go to bed at my regular time the next night.

Now that I'm older, my ideal sleep duration has gone from 7-8 hours to 6-7 hours. For many years, I woke up many times each night but about 2 weeks into primal I started sleeping through the night and it's now very rare for me to wake up before morning.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. Sleepytime tea is amazing and has changed my life. My sleep is so restful now!! I feel a million times better during the day! I am trying to get 8 hours a night, but it's tricky. This tea helps me sleep better-- you can buy it at basically any grocery store, Celestial Seasonings is the brand.

Fall asleep meditating on your breath, the longer you have dreamless sleep the deeper rest you'll get, if you dream most of the night you won't feel very rested when you wake up (or when your forced to wake up) i find deep breathing while trying to fall asleep helps me fall into a deep sleep, i can go 5-7 hours sleep & feel fully rested if i get deep sleep, if im dreaming a lot it's more like 9-10 hours, if well into a fast a few hours sleep is enough

I work til 6pm everyday, theres no way im going to bed at 9/10pm & only having 3/4 hours of non-work playtime, that ain't living
