Hello all, so I'm just going to lay it all down here for ya. I'm currently studying abroad in Paris until the end of December, so that's about 4 months. I have been strictly paleo for 3 months and a crossfitter for 5. However, now that I'm in Paris, a few things have changed.
I'm running (paying to go to a gym is too much for a poor college student), doing lots of walking (with the occasional burpee/pushup/situp/squat) and unfortunately only have 2 hot plates and a microwave for cooking. So no oven. I have also began to eat more primal, cycling in dairy 1 day and no dairy for 2 days. I feel like I'm constantly eating and somewhat hungry. I cut out most of my fruit to try and get a hold over my sweet cravings so that I wouldn't struggle every time I saw a new pastry.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to maintain a healthy bodyweight or even lean out while here? I would also LOVE and APPRECIATE some recipe/food items to stock suggestions. Keep in mind I am without oven.
I know that I have just asked a lot of questions, but I am in need of some advice from you wisdomful paleoites/primalites.
Holy hell, you are in a mecca of tastiness. Do you have a dutch oven? Go to any of the flea markets and grab one and you are good to go as you can braise away on your hot plate. If you have the funds get a blowtorch - cooking or a regular one. When I didn't have an oven that was my trick for crisping up steamed potatoes and pretty much anything else I wanted to hit with fire. Steaming and poaching is your friend - add aromatics to the liquid, season differently and you can make it all work. Slice, shred, cube. Chicken salad, add to stir fries, top greens. Make little tacos and put into lettuce leaves, do this with beef pork chicken. Braise cheap cuts of meat and pick away. Sear steak. Smash and steam all varieties of tubers. Take the smashed potatoes and make a potato pancake all nice and crispy, top with a protein and poached eggs. I made pigeon in red tea when I was there last and it was all stove top. You can totally make a big frittata on the stove, cover with the lid so it steams all the way through and is cooked firmly. Hit with the blowtorch to give colour on top. Slice what you want to eat and throw the rest in the fridge for later. Was just thinking you could do a pot of mussels with herbs, white wine, butter, etc., and since there's no bread to mop up the delicious cooking liquid, save it and make a killer fish soup the next day.
For a sweet make puddings out of dark chocolate and coconut milk unless you're eating dairy, then the world of treats is wide open. You can make little steamed cakes, too! And don't stay too far away from fruit, wild Gariguettes make me swoon.

For me cutting out fruit usually means bigger sweet cravings in the long run, especially if your running. I don't think cutting out the most convenient food you can eat is the best option, just my 2 cents.
You can use the microwave to cook tubers and hotplate for everything else. Stir fries, omelets, burgers etc. are all great options.
Kelsey, it sounds to me like you are in desperate need of a slow cooker! Plop your ingredients in in the morning, have a blast in Paris during the day, and come back to a wonderful paleo friendly meal for dinner.

Don't forget to splurge once in a while at one of the organic marchés on a pastured poulet roti. They call it poulet de farmier and it's amazing. While I was in Paris for a year my favorite meal was found on rue Daguerre, pick up a roast chicken, some blue cheese, and pears. Walk to jardin du luxembourg with good friends and a bottle of sauvignon blanc. Linger in parc and figure out how you can afford to make it back to Paris. Also-- not paleo, but ladurée macaroons are gluten free and an integral part of the Parisian experience. The most paleo aspect of living in Paris is walking everywhere and taking tome to enjoy the beauty in both the people and things around you. Live it up! It's an amazing place.
