I've just used the Cron-O-Meter for the first time today.... And it has told me that I've exceeded my protein intake by 148 grams!! Seriously?!

The recommended amount is 46g but I've eaten 194g......... Is this a huge mistake? I've upped my intake of meat as I was dealing with serious hunger issues. Today I had approx 250g of mince beef for breakfast, more beef in stew for lunch and chicken with my dinner.

This has totally freaked me out - Can someone please tell me if I'm eating way too much protein? Maybe I should consider eating more fats?

Any help/advice/experience sharing would be very much appreciated!

46g? unless you're a 50lbs dog, that's nothing. Don't worry about cron-o-meter... it's more than ok to err on the side of more protein, especially if you do any sort of exercise. – Jonas Nov 7 2011 at 22:27
how much do you weigh? – Jeff Nov 7 2011 at 23:21
Also, don't forget there's a difference between grams of protein and grams of protein containing foods (like beef) – Jeff Nov 7 2011 at 23:21
Cron-O-Meter is great, because it allows you to set your own macro ratios, as well as your minimums & maximums for various minerals & vitamins. Finally, a nutrition site that realizes everyone has their own dietary needs! – Nemesis Nov 8 2011 at 1:31
Thanks for all your comments. Jeff - I'm approx 150 lbs, 5ft 9. I'm over my protein recommendation again today but won't worry about it too much now! – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 19:40

Thats funny. My cronometer says Ive consumed 180 grams of protein and Im still 10 grams short of my recommended amount. I think you missed the part where you can change the settings based on the diet you want to follow. I believe yours is set to vegan.

Hi Andrew. That's so weird, I've actually set my account to 'Paleo' and I'm still over my protein intake for today by 137.2 grams! Maybe there are other settings that I should change, but it looks like I've input all the required info! – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 19:43
The default Paleo settings are wrong. I think the protein and carbs are mixed up. I set mine to 45 10 45 protein : carb: fat. But that's me. – Marnee Nov 8 2011 at 21:25
Thanks so much for this Marnee, I didn't realise that there was an option to customise your settings. I've changed mine to the same as your settings and it looks much more balanced with my daily food intake :) – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 22:09

It's probably comparing you to the RDA. Assuming your kidneys are in order, 1g/lb bodyweight will be safe and there is no real reason to aim for higher (other than satiety, but that's pretty individual).

Thanks conciliator, my kidneys are in perfect order at the moment so I should be fine - I feel really well so that's the most important thing! – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 19:44

Nah, that's fine.

If you'd like to decrease it though while maintaining the same degree of satiety, eat steak instead of the essentially heavily masticated meat you've been eating. The digestion will be slower and the satiety per unit of weight should be higher.

Thanks Travis, I remember you advising that I eat steak in another post as well...... It's all about the steak! I started to eat minced beef as it's that bit cheaper than steak but may revert back to steak again, or maybe save it just for the weekends. Thanks for your input! – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 19:45
I routinely see cuts that are the same price as minced beef, so maybe one of your markets has the same. – Travis Culp Nov 8 2011 at 20:16
I'll have to look harder for cuts that are the same price as minced beef. I live in London and can get approx 300g of mince beef for £2, whereas a cut of rump steak is approx £5/£6. Maybe I should look for different cuts although I think that sirloin etc is around the same price. – Mashanshell Nov 8 2011 at 22:11

If you're healthy, it should have little to no effect on your body.

relax....yes, you exceed the CW recommendation and the admins of the site feel obliged to mention this so that you cannot sue them later.

By default the recommendations by cronometer.com are set to the minimum recommended amounts to prevent malnourishment. So there's nothing wrong with blasting over the minimum protein.
