I don't think of it as "salad" as much as a few raw greens sitting between my meat and my plate.

I second this - my salad is definitely skirting around the definition - if it doesn't have a decent amount of meat and some mayo or avocado it's rabbit food... – MayaBee Nov 8 2011 at 0:43

I don't eat often, but when I do, I prefer salads.

Stay satiated, my friend.

I love this question, and the answers, because nowhere is a definition of "Salad" offered.

Thus I step into the lurch, offering the missing terms for intelligible discussion.

Start with a Cobb Salad. Next, let us remove irrelevant items. Lose lettuce and tomato, and other greens that qualify on some menus. Homer and Bart got this right.

Keep: bacon, avocado, chicken breast, hard boiled egg, and appropriate high-fat dressing.

Wait. I happen to enjoy the festive greens, the tomato, that go with conventional Cobb.

So, let us agree to keep Cobb intact, with the proviso that greens and tomato are understood as delivery system for essentials: bacon, avocado, chicken breast, hard boiled egg, dressing.

This will all be on the quiz.

During the Houston summer (which lasts from April to October), salad with lots of meat and mashed avocado is a staple lunch. From November to March (5 weeks of Indian summer, 8 weeks of fall, 2 weeks of winter, 2 weeks of spring, 3 weeks of " this would be summer if I was in NY"), my leafies are limited to the occasional collard thet insists on trying to run through the bacon fat in my cast iron skillet.

I eat salad as a meal frequently. Mind you, it has significant meat and cheese and weighs over 2 pounds (pay by the ounce salad bar). But it's the most convenient way of avoiding cereal grains when buying a quick lunch near my office.

Is this a trap? If I answer yes, will i get called out for being a vegan and kicked off of Paleohacks?

LOL!!! It is good enough for Sisson. – Eric Nov 7 2011 at 23:19

Every once in a while they work for me as well. But my salads are simply a transport system for all of the other delicious shit that i want to eat. From what I know of Mark, he tends to approach it the same way. – Andrew Nov 7 2011 at 23:27
Andrew, me too! Mine is 50% meat, 40% veggies, 10% greens. – Nance Nov 7 2011 at 23:32

Almost every day for my mid day meal. It has meat and eggs on it though.

Only during the Spring or Summer. Salad or any raw veggies in cold weather has zero appeal for some reason.

Me too!!! I have a hard time eating salads in the winter and soups in the summer. But I also live in South Texas...so that might have something to do with it – McMeghann Nov 8 2011 at 22:11

I often eat a salad as my evening meal because it is easily digested and doesn't disturb my sleep or give me headaches like eating heavy protein at night does.

I don't love salad so I don't have it as a whole meal very often. However, my dh loves salad and frequently requests it for his lunches. I usually use romaine and/or spinach as the base and top it with whatever fresh veggies we have that week from the farmers market (right now that's red bell peppers, multi-colored carrots, and cucumbers). I always include some kind of protein: leftover chicken, beef, pork, taco meat, crumbled hamburgers, canned salmon or tuna, tuna salad, chicken salad, etc. Then I add an "extra" or two: nuts, seeds, dried fruit, etc. He doesn't care for dressing, but if I'm making a salad for myself I whip up some dressing to go on top.

I eat salad with plenty of fat and protein as a meal daily in the warm months, but in the cold months, I want warm food...I'll still eat lots of veggies with fat and protein right now, with the exception being that everything is cooked and warm and therefore warming. I am someone who really needs the fats and proteins to feel satiated, so no plain greens for me ever...

Salad is good. I usually pile on as many different kinds of veggies, fruits, nuts, and meat as I can. I eat it with lemon juice and olive oil for dressing. Common toppings are celery, carrots, mushrooms, olives, pickles, walnuts/pecans/pumpkin seeds/almonds, strawberry/apple/mango, heart of palm, avocado, cucumber, brussel sprouts, brocco slaw, and chicken/ground beef. My lunch is 50% salad, 25% dinner leftovers (something cooked), and 25% fruit by volume.

I just ate a big salad topped with a grilled chicken breast for my dinner, and boy is it making my tummy angry! So much gurgling and noise going on in there. Don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon...
