What was Paleo sex life like? How often did men have sex? How often did they, uh, take care of themselves? Did they stay with one mate their whole lives or did it come and go? Did habits change by season or other factors?

Melissa McEwen recently wrote an interesting blog post about sex in today's hunter-gatherer tribes. You might want to read it and the study she's talking about. Masturbation in these two tribes was unheard of, which was a pretty surprising piece of information for me at least.

And if you believe that, I'll be happy to sell you Michelle Obama. – Daniel Kirsner Nov 8 2011 at 7:33

Daniel, did you actually read the study? A quote from it: "Masturbation also appears to be rare in other forest areas. We asked Robert Bailey (personal communication) about his experiences of trying collect semen for fertility studies from Lese men in the Ituri forest of the Democratic Republic of Congo. He indicated it was very difficult to explain to men how to self-stimulate to obtain semen samples. He said that despite explicit and lengthy instructions three of four semen specimens came to him mixed with vaginal secretions." – Karoliina Nov 8 2011 at 8:11

^Hahah these guys actually had to resort to sex as a substitute for masturbation – Kasra Nov 8 2011 at 14:10

why would they masturbate? masturbation seems to be a neolithic response to neolithic stimuli, whereas these people seem to have the bliss of ignorant simplicity guiding their rods (pun intended). wish i could ease my mind back to that point. focusing on the hunt, the gather, the defense, the community, rather than being a society of "progress" or convenience which leaves our basest instincts useless and renders us slaves to anxiety-driven selfish desires. i honestly bet they don't have sexual harassment problems either, or if they do, it really is a "village idiot" type of situation. All apes practice masturbation and exhibit homosexuality. Except, oddly enough, certain human groups when it comes to self-reported practices. youtu.be/JNj9UJmAnC4 youtu.be/MOpMsuz_uK4 – Daniel Kirsner Nov 8 2011 at 18:38

Thats crazy because many primates masturbate. In my opinion you had sex as much as your options let you. Im sure there was jockeying for most attractive and young able to breed females. I find it apparent that females have generally selected for two attributes.

1) "winners" of physical contests 2) selection of some type and larger genitalia in males.

I make the first assumption purely based on the fact that men have testosterone levels much higher than women which effectively shorten a males lifespan and make him more susceptible to disease.

The second assumption is the fact that compared to all living primates, humans have the largest penises, even when accounting for a difference in body size. Not to mention much larger testes indicate a track record of polygamy, giving the male the ability to copulate and ejaculate many times in a day.

"One characteristic among primates has been clearly targeted for possible selection by Fisherian female choice--male penis size. Primate males living in groups with many females and many males, groups in which promiscuity is the mating rule, have long penes (Dixon 1978). Male chimps, in fact, use their penis for display toward estrous females. Because a longer penis would give a female pleasure (note that the human male has the longest and thickest penis of any primate), female choice might have been a factor driving penis length to extremes among primates." (Small, Meredith F. (1993) Female choices: Sexual behavior of female primates. Cornell Univ. Press, Ithaca, 1993 pp. 109)

How exactly does testosterone lower lifespan?? – karimoo Nov 8 2011 at 16:40

Maleness is not a disease state. – Travis Culp Nov 8 2011 at 23:30
"Just as a stag is designed by sexual selection for battle with sexual rivals and a Peacock is designed for seduction, so a mans psychology is designed to do things that put his survival at risk but increase his chances of acquiring or retaining one or more high quality mates. TESTOSTERONE ITSELF,THE VERY ELIXER OF MASCULINITY, INCREASES SUSCEPTIBILITY TO INFECTIOUS DISEASE." (Ridley, Mathew J. 2003 The Red Queen Pp 20-21.) – Cory151 Nov 9 2011 at 14:13
Too bad for every study that puts "TESTOSTERONE" in a bad light, there are 10,000 that speak its virtues. – Bill1102inf Nov 10 2011 at 4:18
