If you are not gluten-intolerant (or celiac), what are your interactions with celiacs like?
I've had a couple run-ins with celiacs and I was really shocked by their... anger. One in particular who said "You're doing a fad diet, if I eat gluten I'll get colon cancer." I was kinda disappointed as I wasn't trying to compare any affect of gluten on me vs. someone with celiac, just reasons why I avoid grains, especially gluten.
On one hand I can understand, if we have an era of people who tolerate gluten but choose to avoid it- restaurants may not take people seriously when they ask for the gluten-free menu (the question in mind would be ok is this person truly allergic/intolerant or on a "fad" diet).
But on the other hand, I think celiacs and paleos should get along well- we can share most recipes (I'm not interested in a rice flour recipe lol), could have dinners together, put out the demand for more grain-free products.. where's the love? If I were diabetic I wouldn't be upset at anyone who chose to give up sugar- I'd say "right on, good for you!"
I know there are many gluten-intolerant/celiac on paleo hacks.. so what say you?
I have celiacs and what pisses me off the most is people lauding the healthiness of their "gluten-free" lifestyle, but having pizza on the weekends.

It feels like they're cheating and I'm jealous because I can't cheat. I think a lot of it is jealousy. We don't have a choice and seems like people CHOOSING to do this makes the suffering that our disease causes us seem paltry and unworthy of other people's concern. Also, if the majority of the people coming into a restaurant are sneaking bread while ordering off the GF menu restaurants will stop taking us seriously, thinking they can sneak a little flour here and there and it isn't going to hurt anyone. It's gonna hurt me, man.
Over-all I like being Paleo, it felt like a natural outcrop of my GF diet, eliminating almost all possibility for CC and other exposure, I'm glad that my non-Celiac partner and my friends from my gym are on the same train because it means I don't feel like a burdern when we're talking about where we want to go for dinner.
Paleos and Celiacs can get along, and be friends, as long as everyone agrees not to be patronizing or high and mighty about it.
My husband is a celiac and you think those with gluten issues and autoimmune would be more motivated to do Paleo but I'll make some observations. We tried gluten-free (and I read a bunch of books/cookbooks) before Paleo and we saw some benefits, but Paleo was dramatically superior for both of us!
We went to "Healthy Villi," in Boston - a nonprofit (but funded by gluten-free junk food makers) organization dedicated to celiac awareness. About 1200-1500 people, including us attended their Fall 2010 conference. One third were underweight, one third were average weight (but poorer body composition than Paleos of average weight), and one third were overweight/obese. The free gluten-free luncheon was 95% gluten-free junk food/snacks. The irony was that the only healthy things were the salad and few pieces of pepperoni (probably grain-fed) on the pizza (not the crust).
The Healthy Villi newsletter addressed a question if Paleo could help celiacs. Their nutritionists that follow conventional wisdom responded while NOT critical of Paleo (wow!) mentioned it wouldn't provide any additional health benefits - which frankly is ignorant and a lie. Those of us who understand lectins, saponins, phytates, etc. would know that Paleo is superb, and the best advice for anyone with autoimmune/gut permeability. Paleo is also far superior than gluten-free vegetarian and vegan for healing the gut because Paleo reduces lectins, saponins, phytates and other gut-irritants that vegetarians and vegans eat in large quantities. That is why many who dabble with vegetarianism and veganism for long periods of time are risking more autoimmune, leaky gut, and cardiovascular/metabolic issues. It's just a threshold and a matter of time - and some can tolerate more than others - but who wants to be the sad person at the end of the day??!!
My experience is the hostility towards Paleo is for many reasons: 1) they are junk carb-addicted - it takes a lot of willpower to do Paleo - and the more damaged you are the harder it is and the longer it takes - and I've seen a lot of metabolic deranged celiacs. 2) it shatters their worldview of health - who wants to believe that millions including medical professionals (MD, RNs, PhDs, etc.), governmental officials, friends, family and "other smart people" - including people they love are WRONG/MISLED for so many reasons. 3) people are lazy - don't want to read even basic books like Robb Wolf, Sisson; don't want to make even simple meals - like boiled eggs, salads with grilled meat 4) afraid what their doctor, friends, family, spouse etc. will say/do 5) they believe in the myths of Paleo - the usual conventional wisdom - Paleo will make you fat, cancerous, diabetic, sick, give you gout, it works for "some special people" but not most 6) people don't like to change their food behaviors - especially food because there's such an emotional connection to family, friends, social events, weddings, birthdays, etc. (mostly carb/gluten memories to be more precise)
Paleo scholars SHOULD be speaking at more autoimmune lectures (especially gluten sensitivity and celiac events) but I expect opposition and skepticism from junk-food gluten-free industry. It's nice to have gluten-free grain foods once in awhile (we have them as occasional cheat meals) but to live on them is NOT optimal.
If there is good clinical trial done with Paleos and celiacs that might help, but industry funds gluten vaccinations/drugs for research so don't look for funding there!
Some folks don't seem to understand that not all bad reactions to gluten are obvious and dramatic. In my case, I lived with relatively mild complaints my whole life and I never had a clue that my constantly stuffy/runny nose, coughing/hacking, GERD, and irritable bowel were all related to wheat. Except, when I went primal those symptoms all went away and when I splurged after several months they instantly came back. When I returned to primal they disappeared again and when I splurged a second time they came right back. If I eat sugary treats with no wheat I don't have the symptoms so it's very clear that wheat is the problem.
Tests on my colon are still normal, probably because my symptoms are milder than others report. My point is that I have good reasons to live primal even though I'm not celiac and may or may not test out as gluten intolerant.
My mother has Celiac disease. I eat gluten-free prophylaticaly because I have a good genetic chance of developing it myself.
I went to a Celiac support group in my area one night and my god, the looks I got when I said this. People jumped down my throat about needing to be tested. (Why? So a gastro can tell me I don't have Celiacs and that I need to go home and eat more whole grains for the fiber?)
Testing is not the end all and be all. Testing will just confirm Celiac disease, but its often not sufficient to prove gluten intolerance.
My favorite part of the evening though was when the organizer held up a box of some gluten-free, but grain & carb laden cereal that had been donated to them by the company selling it and said "This isn't health food. You should only eat this way if you really have too." While I understand what she meant, I wanted to scream "of course its not health for lady!! It's full of stuff that is going to cause cross reactivity and blood sugar unbalance. Put down the cereal and grab some veggies- that's health food for everyone!"
I went to the Gluten Free expo in Sydney the other weekend, ran by the Coeliac Society. I was expecting to find lots of Paleo people and Paleo friendly food there - but no! I honestly left feeling that going back to a SAD diet would be better than eating the diet they seemed to be promoting.
I got really funny looks when I turned down all of the food saying "I don't eat grains"... I'd love to have a Paleo stand there next year!
Well, I'm fairly certain I have celiac, and I try to stay paleo and highly recommend it to all my friends (much to their occasional annoyance), but there's a couple possible reasons.
There's what FED mentioned; sometimes it makes me really ticked off that I can't have a (good) pizza or sandwich when I cheat. It could be instead of trying to accept her position in life, she lashes out.
Then there are some rare people who feel that their disease makes them special, and more people having it, or acting in a way that's similar to those who have it, in their mind takes away the "specialness." These sad and thankfully-uncommon souls, you probably can't do anything about.
Well, there is another side to the coin. Just why do i find myself telling everyone my daughter is gluten intolerant?
Because people respect that. They do not respect freedom of choice... because that forces them to question their own choices.
And even intolerant hardly works. I have to literaly go through the whole scenario, stomach cramps, diharea, constipation. to get an....oh well in that case. Just what does that mean? In that case i excuse you for being different?
glutin is a bag of crap...but you get pity if you are celiac, resented if you are not.
so, we are in the same boat. Just a different venting of fearful emotions.
I started having reactions to gluten in November of 2009. I went to Five Guys with a friend and had a burger (with bacon) and the fries... since that mishap, I have been having problems. At first it was terrible. Being the Italian that I am, twice weekly pasta meals were the norm. With my dad, he always asked "where the pill" was. He thought that it was crap that my reactions to gluten were as bad as they were and he said that no Italian could ever get sick like that. (he is better now with it, but still insists there should be a pill to take so that I can eat real pasta) Then this past January I was introduced to the paleo way of life. Now if I want pasta, its spaghetti squash all the way. I don't miss it that much anymore. All my CF friends that do paleo/GF as a choice; I have nothing negative to say to them at all. I can't tell what someone should do and not do. Do i sometimes think about a nice big bowl of spaghetti and meatballs.. HELL YEAH, but I can handle not being able to eat it...there is so much more yummy and nutritious food out there... In March, I was introduced to my boyfriend who decided as his New Year's resolution he was giving up gluten (mostly bc of the research that he had done and all the negative things he was learning). He adapted the paleo lifestyle with me and I love it. Paleos and celiacs can live together... my bf and I are proof of that...the celiacs just have to get over the jealousy they have when they hear that someone gave up gluten bc of its health effects.
If someone is paleo, I'm always heartened to find someone else who turns down pizza, cake, and BEER (it only pisses me off when someone eats all of the GF pizza/cake and then accepts BEER without a second thought).
Fortunately, I haven't experienced that problem with any of my Coeliac family members...they've been very supportive. It sounds like the negative reaction you're getting from some of those with Coeliac is all about people getting their noses into other peoples' business, and then being pissed off/indignant about something that doesn't even concern them. It's disappointing, but I guess the only thing you can do is disregard them. You could try to explain to them how we should all be allies in our anti-grain-ness, but I suspect it would be a waste of breath, with them wanting to cling to their sense of outrage instead. :-/
