When I first came across this site (a few times here and there a while back) the whole "paleo" label seemed to be equated with a pretty extreme adherence to the particular VLC variant of paleo. As I've been reading more here I've seen many concessions to decidedly non-paleo foods (dairy probably most prominent). I've also been surprised by the number of decidedly non-VLC paleos here.

So I'm curious what percent you might put on your Paleo-ness, and how you might describe your version of Paleo.

Mods feel free to close/delete if there's some sort of similar poll post in this regard.

To answer my own question, I definitely exceed the Sisson 80% rule for his primal adherence (FWIW I agree with Dr. Dansinger of The Biggest Loser fame that 80% adherence to a diet is not sufficient for compliance-based results) rule. I'm rather surprised that I'm more true paleo than a lot of hackers on here! Ain't that a kicker? :D (Yes I'm well aware that a lot is still a minority so I'm not claiming some sort of paleo cred here peeps).

LMFAO - Lacto Meat Free Archevore Ovo diet. Alternatively, a Lacto-Ovo Archevore Low Reward vegetarian diet - say that three times fast!!!

I'm the white (actually brown) sheep of the Paleo family as the vegetarian that has come out as being Paleo and lovin' it. Here was my "coming out" - http://paleohacks.com/questions/51442/compassionate-paleo/51508#51508

Key tenets

  • Avoid gluten
  • Avoid excess Omega 6 vis-a-vis vegetable oils
  • Avoid excess frcutose
  • Avoid soy

High carb (i.e. safe starches) by most people's standards (50-60%). I started eating this way on 1/1/2011. Down 29 lbs this year.

Regarding compliance, the mis-application of the 80-20 rule, especially with respect to diet, really deserves attention. The Pareto principle states that 20% of the inputs drive 80% of the outputs (the numbers can be different, but this is the traditional Pareto rule).

To wit, what if 20% of your diet (i.e. cheats) drives 80% of your metabolic derangement??? I think the Sisson 80-20 rule certainly has its place in terms of people dealing with the emotional aspects of strict compliance. And of course it depends upon your specific situation. YMMV. But people should at least consider this when talking 80-20, especially when they are wondering why they are stalling or not seeing the results the hoped for/expected.

My cheats mostly come in the form of alcohol, with the occasional dessert. When doing the Low Reward experiment that was posted on Whole Health Source, there were essentially no cheats and shocker, I saw big results!

I consider myself Primal Herder -- One of my teachers when I was a midwife told me how her own ancestors (up in Northern Canada) followed the reindeer herds, and actually would capture reindeer cows and calves and keep them for milk, long before there were established herds. My dad's family has been keeping goats for a long time, in the mountains of northern Italy, and later in both Sicily and Greece. So I don't mind a bit of raw milk dairy in my life.

I'm pretty low-carb, though it's seasonal. During the winter, I eat more squashes and root vegetables, but I don't eat fruit or drink juices, with the exception of some small, dark berries in summer and avocados. (Up around 20-25% of daily calories) The rest of the year, carbs make up around 15% of my daily diet. OTOH, I'm definitely in the 'high animal fats' camp, with a minimum daily fat consumption in the 50% range or better -- lard, tallow, drippings, chicken fat... the only veggie fats are avocado, macadamia oil and coconut (and other than coconut, macadamias, and cashews, I don't eat nuts -- they're apparently too close to grains for my body to tolerate).

I do IF most days, with 1 meal at 10am, one meal at 4pm, and then nothing till the next morning.

I don't really 'cheat' or do "cheat days" or anything like that. I do what makes my body feel right, and make no apologies for it... and stuff that makes me feel like crap, well, I pretty much just choose not to eat it because I don't want to feel horrible. I don't feel like I deprive myself at all -- I feel like I'm genuinely doing what I need to to be healthy. Still thinking about hacking my body with 3-4 months of no nightshades and seeing what happens. shrugs It's all a big experiment, to me... if I feel better, I keep that piece... if I don't, "bye bye"... Try all new stuff for at least 3 months and see what changes it brings, and wait another 3 before adding something -else- to track, so that the new habit gets well established before I try adding another one. That's about it.

Oh, one more thing to clarify, just from my perspective... I don't consider this a contest of "Who's More Paleo" for me -- Other folk are welcome to take more or less extreme approachs, and I'll listen to them and consider what they're doing and see whether or not I think it's sustainable for me -- if it is, I may add it to my "hack list" -- if not, and it works for them, Yaay Them! I don't think its healthy to base my well being on a contest for who can be more HooAH! because in general, I'm obsessive and super-competitive and start ripping myself apart when I see myself as 'failing' -- so I just don't put myself in that trap any more. I am what I am, and that's good enough -- and if it isn't, I hack it until it is... not because someone else is judging me, but because I want to feel my best and be happiest in my own life. Just sayin'.

Im Robb Wolf's autoimmune protocol. Even though Ive never been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder. Went from primal to regular Robb Wolf...felt better but still not great. Then took out nightshades/felt better, took out eggs/felt better, finally took out nuts and seeds and then my stiff back, depression, anxiety, etc finally "fully" lifted.

Ive been Robb Wolf autoimmune for 1.5 yrs. I recently went on vacation and was exposed to gluten, eggs, dairy etc and had NO REACTION! I also started a new job recently and have been getting exposure and once again no reactions. It's crazy. I still try to eat autoimmune paleo most of the time but my body seems to be MUCH stronger then before.

I freestyle eat. Mostly protein cooked in fat with veggies and Ill eat sweet potatoes or now even rice a few days a week. But I dont sweat ratios.

I'm high-carbohydrate. I eat a good amount of dairy and dairy products and a relatively small amount of meat besides the liver and bones. I also eat about 2-3 eggs a day, down from the 8-12 I was eating and the steak I was eating every day. I eat a lot of fruit and potato. On occasion I'll eat rice and green beans with soy sauce on top or sometimes spinach or somtimes with beans or peas. I almost always eat roast when I make meat. I'm not really a big fish, pork, or chicken eater, but I do eat it on occasion. I like carrot and cucumber and celery and will usually have that with some vinegar every day. I used to eat a ton of butter, but now I think I eat about maybe 4 tablespoons a day max. I don't know, these changes from VLC/LC weren't for any specific health reasons I just found that I felt better overall on a high-carbohydrate pattern and it is more compatible with my endurance training. I also drink a lot of orange juice that I make myself. I like shrimps too. And white fish when I do eat fish. I don't believe in omegas and I don't eat oil, not even olive oil. A little refined coconut oil on occasion. No wheat or other similar weeds. Oats on occasion, haha they are legumes not weeds :). I was never into vitamins but I have recently started using B6, C, magnesium, Chromium, and Q10, and I use NutriSorb A when the liver looks a little dry through the window and I use Great Lakes beef gelatin when I don't have bones or don't want to fetch them. I don't really cook anything on high heat. Everything is in the crock pot, or baked, or boiled. I like honey in milk too.

I don't want to sound like I have the will of a super human, but for me it never occurs to me to cheat, I just really enjoy making my own stuff and being in the kitchen fiddling with stuff. That's really all that it is.

I have Centenarians on both sides of my family and they've never given me any reason to believe that high carbohydrate is detrimental in any way. Really that evidence is all I need. I do fast naturally, not on purpose, some days I'm just not hungry and won't eat but 1 meal. Some days I'm extra hungry and will eat a lot. I think I eat at a different time every day. I just go with my instincts on that one. And eat when I'm hungry and don't eat when I'm not, can't go wrong there especially if everything you're eating is healthy.

Here goes (this is kinda long!):

I avoid all the NADS on a daily basis, such as seed oils, excess PUFAs, sugar, gluten and all grains. I also avoid nightshades and fruit for the most part.

I eat predominantly beef, 100% grassfed only (or I won't eat it). I try and make as much bone broth as I can, and have recently started adding an extra 4-5g of gelatin to these. I try to eat liver (beef or chicken) at least 1x/wk. I eat eggs (raw and cooked, now that I've mostly healed my gut and alleviated my egg allergy/intolerance). I eat bacon occasionally if I eat breakfast, which is rare. Alot of my meat I eat raw. I eat quite a bit of sashimi, but avoid farmed fish such as salmon and tilapia. I flip my s***t for oysters and clams. I would eat oysetrs everyday if I could. I used to eat alot of sardines from the tin, but haven't been doing so recently, not sure why.

I also eat high fat and fermented raw dairy, especially grass fed heavy cream, butter, ghee and cheese (I'm Irish/Scandinavian/French so I never had a problem with it). Sometimes on a workout day I will allow myself a reward of high quality ice cream. I sually have 1 or 2 cups of black tea with heavy cream and cinnamon every day.

I really only eat spinach, kale and dark leafy greens in the vegetable category. Most others I am not really interested in. Occasionally I eat carrots or parsnips, sometimes celery root, and sweet potatoes PWO. I do eat some fermented vegetables such as lacto-fermented pickles, kimchi etc... I don't eat a whole lot of nuts, some walnuts and pecans once in awhile. I occasionally eat dulse or kelp as a salty snack. Occasionally I'll have a banana PWO. In summer I will eat blueberries and other types of dark berries.

I supplement, but have recently cut out fish oil.

I'm on an RF schedule (Regular Fasting) Leangains style, from 3pm-11pm or 4pm-12am everyday depending on my schedule, and I work out 3x a week, sometimes less, lifting heavy at max effort, with a week or two off every 6-8 weeks. Occasionally I run to and from the gym, but that's about it for cardio.

I allow myself to indulge in alcohol (I'm a bartender, gotta make sure I'm not poisoning you!), but avoid beer and wheat distilled liquors. Occasionally I'll cheat on pizza, but this is becoming a very rare occurrence, as the last time really reminded why I got into Paleo in the first place...I was sniffling and sneezing like I'd just climbed through a hay loft.

I've always been skinny, but never very muscular. I've been eating this way to maximize my results in the gym, gain lean muscle mass and lose the skinny fat, slouchy, knock-kneed me that I accepted as unavoidable for the last 30 years. I also got into this as a way to try to cure my (admittedly self-diagnosed and well-hidden) depression and manic-depressive personality disorder --- it worked. A complete disappearance of seasonal allergies was a wonderful bonus. Paleo has really served as a springboard for all manner of life-hacking. I'm in better shape, and able to gain more muscle, at 30 than I was 18!

Sorry for the book! Not sure what style you'd call it, but I'm 100% all the time.

I'm pretty solid PHD most of the time. In the summer I lean towards Ray Peat style (lots of fruit), in the winter I'm a bit lower carb (very low fructose) primal. As my carbs drop, my dairy goes up.

I pretty much avoid vegetable oil, wheat, and added sugar.

I don't really react to wheat as far as I can tell, but it is a pretty convenient approach to avoiding processed foods. I will have a cheat meal about once every week or two but eat fairly strict otherwise so I don't have to worry about the cheats when they do come along (almost always at restaurants.)

Addendum: I mainly eat eggs, ground beef, rice, spinach, and broccoli as my staples. I have a tablespoon or two of coconut oil most days, and I have black beans a few times a week (because right now I am leaning towards soluble fiber being a good thing.)

I tried VLC for 4-5 months but it did not really agree with me.

I'm pretty 80:20 paleo, but I think that the 20% does matter. I don't just eat whatever in my 20%, I eat only high-quality whole foods like dark chocolate, grass-fed milk, chicken fried in lard, rice, buckwheat, and really really good ice cream.

Well, I'm not sure what's around you (or me now that I'm Chicago), but NYC had a lot of great local ice cream shops that made ice cream with pastured eggs and grass-fed dairy. Decadent flavors with real whole ingredients. I also make my own ice cream when I'm not being lazy. I don't eat things like Ben & Jerrys, which is sugar flavored sugar. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Nov 9 2011 at 2:19

Uhhh ... please inform as to locations of such ice cream places in New York? If there are any that use somewhat less fructose that would be amazing. – Paul Nov 9 2011 at 4:30

I was partial to van leeuwen, victory garden, steves's, and ample hills. If you are dairy free, I recommend rockin raw. I thought ven leeuwen tasted the least sweet and most like fat. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Nov 9 2011 at 4:32

As much as I see the word Paleo everywhere all day long, I don't think of my diet in Pleistocene/hunter-gatherer/ancestral terms at all. All I'm interested in are the nutrient density:toxin ratios of various foods (sometimes too high on the former becomes the latter), and I don't eat anything that has a poor ratio. If I were to classify my diet, I would call it "Elemental Paleo" in that I don't eat mixed meals and everything is very simple, nutrient-rich and identifiable. I never bother with complex meals or recipes, but I really enjoy my food and I never find myself dreaming about eating garbage. I also never lose sight of this:

Food = Flesh

Life = Activity

The further one gets away from either of those things, the further one is from optimal health.

I was very strict paleo/vlc for several months. I am less so now as I add things back one at a time to see what works and what doesn't.

What kind? Dunno.. not labeling myself.

I am on month 2 of strict paleo. I do not consume grains, processed sugars, dairy. I think my only struggle is finding good sources of protein. I live in the south, 200 miles and 4 states away from the closest Whole Foods, and nowhere near a good organic farm with grass-fed livestock. So, I am still ingesting non-organic vegetables and fruit, and grain fed proteins. My only cheat is 90% cacao dark chocolate, but I do crossfit 4-5 times a week so I think I am okay.

I have found the switch to be amazingly easy. I have no cravings for carbs, never was a drinker so alcohol is no issue.

I am still learning the workings of this new eating lifestyle but my entire family is on board in varying degrees and we all feel amazing!

I am in the panhandle of Florida. I think I have found a lead for a farm close by, they just started raising cattle and have fowl and possibly pig. going to visit them on Saturday! If all goes well, we are getting a freezer and buying a side of beef, some chickens and pork. Wish us luck! – Renee Nov 8 2011 at 21:30

I guess I'm not any style? I started out very very strict and instead of a 30-day chose to go 60. Not for any other reason but to really start my body off with a clean slate. During that time and going forward I gleaned things from books and websites, in addition to knowing one other Paleo person and their way of eating, and based how I ate off of those references.

It was definitely touch and go and required a lot of tinkering but I found ratios and an eating pattern that worked for me. I lift and do CrossFit, I used to cycle but cut back on that significantly, 100-ish miles a week down to 20, as it was counter-intuitive to my muscle growth.

So now: lowish fat use but when I utilize it's marrow butter, bacon/duck fat, avocado/coconut/mac nut oil. I love coconut milk, tinned not cartoned. A very round selection of protein including fish, vegetables and fruits - more vegetables and both I keep seasonal, tubers are my main source of carb. Very little dairy a bit of milk in my coffee and depending on how I'm feeling sometimes kefir or cottage cheese makes it in. Kimchi. Eggs maybe one or two a week, cut down significantly from about a dozen a week as I was getting weird breakouts - experimenting pinned it on the eggs. I don't eat any packaged sweets unless it's a bit of dark chocolate. To munch maybe some mac nuts or almonds and dried coconut. For quantity of meals it varies from 2 a day upwards to 6, I definitely let my body dictate that part - workout days v. non, etc. Also going out to eat is much different than when I stay in. I'm cautious because I don't want to feel gross but if I want that grilled onigiri filled with sour plum? Yep, gonna get it.

I do bake and make both Paleo/Primal and conventional treats by order, as gifts, or just to give to friends. I very rarely eat anything sweet that I make outside of testing to make sure they're not shite. Of course there are exceptions, homemade fresh fruit popsicles and sorbets over summer!, but again that wasn't every day.

Whatever I'm doing it's working: my rosacea is gone which means no more medications to treat it and physically feel absolutely amazing.

Thanks E.CS! Your posts, and replies to posts, are always pretty great :)

Been 100% 'Paleo' for years and LC-VLC, don't consume a lot of starches, zero sugar (fruit occasionally), only fermented dairy, lots of bone broth, home made kombucha, home made fermented veggies, lots of water. I work hard, play a lot, get lots of sun, I sleep when I am tired, eat when I am hungry, randomly IF and I don't stress about anything anymore. I live like an animal

I never picked anybody's 'way' of doing paleo I just did a lot of n=1 and I know what works best for me. I am more free now than I have ever been (mentally, physically, spiritually). I chase women half my age, I am 47 (and catch them) and I will die being shot by a jealous husband when I am 93 ;)

I started out strict paleo/LC but have kind of moved toward a combo of that and WAPF. Somewhere in the middle, really. I only buy local, humanely raised/pastured meat because I can't stomach buying conventional/CAFO stuff. Wild/sustainably-farmed fish on occasion, some pastured dairy (mostly in the form of butter and heavy cream, as those are lower on the casein scale and agree with me better). Some pastured eggs, too. I probably eat a little less meat than some here, but try to make it count. If I didn't have access to good animal products, I'd probably do lacto-/ovo-/pesca.

After a lot of reading I kind of settled on the Archevore-type avoidance: gluten (which I'm very sensitive to anyway), excess fructose, and industrial vegetable oils. I still don't do much in the way of 'safe' grains except for the occasional rice in paella, but I've added back some properly prepared (a la WAPF) non-soy/peanut legumes into my diet once a week or so and feel better now actually. I eat lots of sweet potatoes and veggies, little fruit save for in summer, etc.

Basically I try to stay as local/seasonal/organic as possible with some 'safer' legumes thrown in. We're lucky to have a full-diet CSA at a local farm (pastured beef/pork/chicken/eggs/raw dairy/veggies/fruit, and gluten grains for those who want them), so by necessity we eat seasonally.

I'd say 90% adherence to paleo.

I'm pretty strict on no gluten, legumes. My down fall is chocolate lately (but the dark stuff at least), some dairy but only butter and heavy cream lately.

I'm MCarb, but have lost all the weight I needed, plus a bit more so higher carb now because I need to maintain and not lose anymore.

I am still moderate exercise, walking most of the time and constant movement in general.

I'm trying to heal, but with a recent move and hotel living its put me backwards so all my good work has reversed itself. (eating out most meals, cross contamination issues and allergy issues/food & stress hitting me like a brick)

I'm happier but still not well, so will have to go strict and elimination diet once I get into my home.

I started just over a year ago on a low carb version of paleo, I was already thin (although with a gluten caused pot belly) and I lost about a stone! My periods lengthened which I did not like AT ALL but my migraines stopped, which was heavenly.

In the January, 3 months after I started eating paleo, my sister made me an almond and tangerine bithday cake, family size, aside from two slices, I ate the lot. In one day. I think my body was screaming for sugar of some sort! Since then I have been WAY more relaxed about the whole thing.

I never eat gluten, very, very rarely consume vegetable oil, if at all now, I possibly eat too much dark chocolate (85 - 90% cocoa) like sometimes if I'm being lazy I'll skip lunch and just scoop butter into my mouth with the chocolate, I can easily go through 2 100g bars when I'm on one, I don't feel too good after this, funnily enough! I eat lots of beef, lamb, some pork, some poultry, some wild caught fish and seafood, heart and liver a couple of times a week, lots of veg, I tried the low veg way but for me it just made me feel like crap so I upped the veg back up. I eat lots of root veg this time of year (yum) more leafy greens and salad in the summer, usually what ever is growing in my garden, or is in season locally, although I'm not super strict with this.

I I.F. on the weekends and in the holidays when I don't have the school run, I find it so easy now, it kind of happens naturally, I drink one cup of caffeinated coffee with coconut uht from a carton in the morning and then drink decaff, or water for the rest of the day.

Like Aravind my main "cheats" are alcohol, which would be mainly red wine, and occasionally if it's on offer, I will buy a tub of Ben and Jerries "phish food" and eat the lot.

I should do more exercise but I'm lazy, I'll occasionally lift some heavy weights that are in my garden and I rarely use the pull up bar we have on our living room door, to be honest I forget it's there, I do do a lot of walking though as I walk my four year old to school.

I am very lucky in that my O/H is paleo so there are no issues there, or with our daughters diet, we tell the school she is gluten intolerant (which she is) and again I am very lucky as they are incredibly accommodating, I send her in with packed lunch which makes things easier.

Jees, sorry I seem to have written an essay! But I think, that's about it. Great question btw :)

I'm lacto-paleo + Reese's peanut butter cups. I typically shun peanut products due to the aflatoxin and lectins, yet I have a tough time with the Reese's :( Other than that, I eat eggs for breakfast most days, assorted meats & veggies for lunch & dinner, fruit a few times a week (more in the summer). I have heavy cream in my coffee about half the time (sometimes coconut milk), small amounts of cheese a few times a week, and ice cream once or twice a week. I'm guessing I'm at about 55% fat, 25% protein, 20% carbs for macros.

Have to say that Reese's are my "gateway food" -- I used to think I could just have one every now and then, and be OK -- but I get one, and then the next day, I have to have another one -- then I start eating two a day, then buy bags of the 'minis' so I can eat several -- and if I don't catch it by that point, some evening, I'll find myself hiding in the closet with a "halloween size" bag of mini reese's eating the whole darned thing. I'm ~95% compliant Archevore/Perfect Health Diet/HoneyBadger. I avoid the NADs. No gluten grains. Low sugar/frutose. Try to avoid seed oils. I eat (mostly) pastured meats & eggs, safe starches, cream/butter & yogurt, a bit of fruit and nuts and lots of veg. Sensible indulgences include dark cholocate and red wine and the occasional taco or 3. 2-3 times per week IFing. Lifting 4 times per week and sprinting 1. It's been very easy to follow and I feel great.

My level rose and dipped for the first 4 months, then it crashed, then it shot upward and has remained high for the 2 months since the crash.

I eat one main meal each day: salad, meat/fat/veggies/bone broth, and 1 piece of fruit. I put myself in the IF camp with a 9-2 eating window unless I have a schedule conflict.

If I get hungry later, I usually have a can of sardines or 4-5 pecan halves.

Based on my experience so far, I am either 100% primal or I am a binge eater. Therefore, my occasional cheat days involve having more than one fruit and that works fine.

I eat a little butter and a little whipping cream; my fruit is mostly grapefruit; my meat is usually fried or slow-cooked beef and marrow bones with some uncured bacon and very occasional poultry or fish.

I am strict paleo. No wheat, gluten, legumes, beans or dairy. It's been almost 5 months. What does VLC mean? Very little carbs? I like seasonal vege so I've been eating a lot of squashes lately. I also probably eat to many carbs from fruit.

I'm WAPF meets Primal/Archevore. I don't do VLC, but I don't consider that a requirement for paleo anyway. I don't eat grains, industrial seed (vegetable) oils, or most sugars (very occasional honey, maple syrup, or coconut sugar in treats).

All of our meats and eggs are local pastured/grassfed and most of our fruits and veggies are local organic. My biggest divergence from paleo is that I do eat traditionally prepared legumes (as per WAPF) about once a week. I tried going without them and had symptoms that did not resolve until I returned them to my diet. I eat high-quality cheese and whole cream occasionally but generally avoid all other dairy.

The only supplement I take is fermented cod liver oil.

I follow this protocol at least 95% of them time. Most of my "cheats" (I don't use that word for myself) involve sushi (white rice) or dark chocolate.

I'm a mental case that went to Paleo for answers, which suprisingly delivered. I'm strict Paleo, no alcohol, and no coffee. Dropping coffee was huge. I used to have really high moods, then terrible depression, then I dropped coffee and I've been consitently fatigued for almost four months straight. It's better then having highs and lows, shows how bad it is that I'm praising being really fatigued all the time.

I started eating my version of paleo about 2 months ago -- it's evolving (ha! see what I did there?) all the time, but for now:

I mostly eat meat (pastured, local, organic as much as possible), eggs (pastured, local), and vegetables of all kinds except potatoes. Some dairy in the form of good (milk + cultures only) yogurt a couple of times a week, half-and-half in my coffee daily, and small amounts of cheese as a condiment nearly daily. 0-2 servings of fruit (usually apples or berries) a day. 1/4 cup or less of nuts (usually walnuts, sometimes almonds or cashews) a day. Added fats are butter, coconut oil, olive oil & bacon fat. No added sweeteners (including artificial sweeteners -- a huge change for someone who used to live off Diet Pepsi), except the very rare dollop of honey. Only grain is the occasional small amounts of rice. I have no idea what my macronutrient percentages are. I'm sure it's much lower carb than my old grain-heavy, sweet-heavy diet. When I eat like this I feel really good physically and emotionally, and I've been slowly & steadily losing body fat.

I also drink wine, hard cider and/or liquor a few times a week -- beer, which I used to love, now makes me so bloated I can't stand it. In and of itself, I think this is fine, but sadly sometimes drinking leads to, "Hmm, how's about some of those baby Twix bars from Halloween?" which leads to "Eh, I already ate the Twix bars, let's go to town and make a big mug of hot cocoa!" and so on. These slippages are getting fewer and farther between because I feel like crap (physically and emotionally) the next day.

I think I'm probably closest to Sisson's Primal diet, but for some reason prefer the moniker paleo.

ETA: I went to Sisson's site and found his updated Primal food pyramid -- http://www.marksdailyapple.com/introducing-the-new-primal-blueprint-food-pyramid/ -- and, yeah, that's pretty much how I eat, when I'm eating "right."

I'd say I'm around 80% no grains, no gluten, no dairy, no legumes. My cheats mostly come from alcohol on the weekends, and even then, I drink Vodka distilled with oranges, mineral water with squeeze of lime. (Yes, this is me justifying it :D) I would love to be a dairy eater on Paleo, but I cant find one single dairy product that doesnt make my stomach do this weird gurgly-thingy.
I'm a triathlete so I maintain a high protein version of paleo on the offseason, but a higher carb version of it during the racing season. I just eat more potatoes of all kinds, more fruit, corn, and some white rice. I tried training for a half Ironman this year strict paleo and it just doesnt work well.

I latched onto WAPF back around 1999, ditching vegetable oils and embracing coconut oil and traditional fermented foods. But, I was still a largely vegetarian carb junkie, eating loads of "healthy" whole grains and beans, and continuing to get fatter. I started shifting toward paleo in Oct 2003 by eating more meat and cutting out most (but not all) grains, beans, refined sugars, and tubers.

About five years ago, I ditched the sprouted grain bread and oatmeal and have been largely paleo ever since. I go through phases when I'm more and less strict about certain foods, like cheese and dried beans, which are comfort foods but also problematic. Too much cheese gives me headaches, and starch dysregulates my appetite. I have the discipline to not eat types of food, but I have zero ability to not eat when I'm hungry. Every time I start eating any kind of starchy food several times per week, I start gaining weight. But, for me, maintaining an even keel does not require very low carb. The few times I tried VLC, I could not get past the brain splitting headaches.

Right now, coffee and the local organic heavy cream are my main neolithic indulgences.

We do eat pastured dairy.

We eat Paleo 90% at home and 80% when we travel. We miss our homecooked food after about 3 days of travel typically.

We have severe sensitivities to gluten, soy, and artificial colors, so we eat pretty clean.

Our cheats are gluten-free desserts, gluten-free grains, and more rarer legumes.

We tried VLC and LC for awhile and found this moderate carb approach better for the most part in the style of the Perfect Health Diet.

Daily: 50-60% calories from pastured fat - (pastured meat and wild seafood), butter, ghee, coconut oil, lard, tallow, etc.

15-25% from animal protein (pastured meat and wild seafood, some eggs)

15-25% from safer starches (sweet potatoes, plantains, potatoes, and smaller amounts of white rice on occasion) and veggies (lesser fruits)

0-5% from nuts and seeds

The higher end of protein and carb on gym and weight training days.

By weight daily:

About 0.75-1 pound per person of animal meats, seafood, eggs/day

About 1.5-2.2 pounds per person of plant matter from mostly vegetables, starches, fruit, (0-2 servings of fruit a day)

It's still a plant-based diet! LOL :)

We eat till satiation! Some days are more foods from animals, some days are more plants - we follow our instincts.
