I started taking K2 (5mg) over a year ago. I started taking it at night, but moved it to the afternoon because my mouth started falling open as I slept, which makes for an awfully dry mouth in the morning. So, I kept moving the time I took it- I took it in the afternoon for a while, and then recently started taking it in the morning. Now I've skipped a day and I guess two, because I didn't take it this morning and certainly don't want to take it in the P.M.

Even this annoyance is actually a benefit- I used to grind my teeth, but I don't anymore.

Can you please explain how K2 relates to tooth grinding/mouth falling open? – Rockgrrl Nov 8 2011 at 21:00
5 mg is a lot to be taking forever with a fat soluble. I suppose it's possible that with enough A and D it won't matter, but there must be an upper limit. – Travis Culp Nov 8 2011 at 21:01

It is not a lot if there is a breakdown in the Vitamin K2 recycle system Travis. – The Quilt Nov 8 2011 at 22:07

And how might one identify such a breakdown? – Travis Culp Nov 8 2011 at 23:28

Rockgrrl, supplementation of K2 (and magnesium) did what I describe above. I have only had the experience of it happening, not the biochemistry education necessary to explain it. – August Nov 9 2011 at 16:45

I've been taking 45 mg a day for several motnhs with no obvious side-effects.

With some Googling you will find articles on whether there is a K2 upper limit. From memory, no significant side effects were found at levels of 45 mg/day. I don't remember how long that dosage was maintained in the study.

I'm skeptical the K2 is causing you to sleep with your mouth open. I also wonder how much you were absorbing if you were taking it at night, unless you were eating some food with fat at the same time.

I eat a lot of fat. The K2 seems to be the thing that is doing it. When I stop supplementing, my mouth seems to stay closed. I remember seeing those high doses too, and that there wasn't any known limit, but I was wondering if people started noticing they don't need as much after supplementing for a while. – August Nov 9 2011 at 17:58

I've been taking 15 mg/day for 1.5 -> 2 years (not sure). AFAIK, no side effects. I feel fine.
