So it's been 6 weeks full Paleo and I still feel awful, in fact I feel my IBS is worse than before. So much constipation, colon spasm, and paltry, incomplete, and unsatisfying bowel movements. I saw my naturopath today - he really supports Paleo, but he sees it as more of a starting point than a set of hard-and-fast rules. We'll be doing a stool test to see what's happening with my gut flora and possible parasites. But he also wants me back on brown rice with my meals. He himself tried a veg-and-meat diet and found his digestion did better once he re-introduced brown rice.

So we discussed a bit the brown rice-vs-white rice issue. He's a big fan of brown, whereas Paleo favours white...but I also know that white rice is even more constipating for me. The day after sushi is a day I don't use the bathroom. So do I: 1. Try brown rice, perhaps fermenting it as suggested by Stephan Guyanet - http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-way-to-soak-brown-rice.html 2. Try haiga rice, which has a bit more fiber than white rice, but doesn't have the outer bran like brown rice. 3. Try white rice and hope that upping my magnesium to will counteract the constipation factor.

I suppose I'll just try all 3 of these to see what works best. But I guess I'm looking for feedback on the rice issue generally. I read about Paleos who've re-introduced it to fuel their workouts, but not many posts about people eating it simply to improve their poops (aside from Melissa McEwan who wrote a blog post about this).

I just ordered Haiga rice after learning about it on Melissa's blog. Looks like the best choice to me, it has all the benefits of brown rice without the antinutriens. – ROB Nov 12 2011 at 16:26
How lean are you (i.e. are you underweight)? – Tom R. Nov 13 2011 at 0:23

Rice is best for IBS-D. It sounds like you are IBS-C? If that's correct you are going to have try something different. I am IBS-CD, so when I have IBS-C issues, I know I need to

  • Up probiotic consumption
  • Be careful with or eliminate dairy and chocolate
  • Up magnesium intake or take a supplement
  • If gas is an issue, I don't recommend this (since it's a FODMAP), but otherwise inulin can have a regulating effect
  • Eliminate vegetables and add them back in one by one. For me, crucifers are a HUGE issue and were causing the spasms I was suffering from.

Haiga rice is not going to help because it has very little fiber. It is excellent for loose stools, but not good for the opposite. Brown rice might help, as may high-fiber pseudograins like quinoa or buckwheat (also high in mg), but I've had mixed results with them.

Starch can be good or bad depending on your flora. You should use it with caution. I mainly use pumpkin/sweetpotato/banana/etc. for IBS-D.

Great info--thanks, Melissa! – Dragonfly Nov 12 2011 at 4:17
How many IBS's are there? – peter Nov 12 2011 at 5:04

IBS-C, IBS-D or IBS-CD (IBS-with constipation, IBS-with diarrhea or IBS-with constipation and diarrhea). I think. – Matt Nov 12 2011 at 10:33

I had IBS-D for 10 years, but when I went to Paleo it became IBS-C. But a comment here on Paleohacks helped me see the light, when the guy said that "constipation is usually something you are missing from your diet". So I started eating fermented foods: home-made probiotic lactose-free GOAT yoghurt, Yogi kombucha decaf green tea, and two multi-probiotic pills before bed (iFlora). Within just a few days I was feeling perfect, and had a well-formed stool every morning within 30-45 minutes after waking up! I'd say to stay away from rice for now, and instead eat fermented foods.

Personally, I'd skip the rice & try some other things first. (If you haven't already)

  1. Eliminate FODMAPS

  2. Make sure you are strictly gluten-free.

  3. Add some probiotics from food sources like kombucha.

  4. Supplement with Magnesium Citrate or Glycinate 200-600 mg.

BTW, I'm not against eating rice--I just don't know that it will solve your IBS. – Dragonfly Nov 12 2011 at 3:59
Thanks. I'm doing all these things except #3 - I'm still working on finding probiotic food sources that don't bother me. And I don't think rice will solve my IBS, just hoping that it'll add more bulk to my stools so they pass more easily. However after reading everyone's posts here, I want to try some other things first before bringing back rice. Thanks. – Renee Nov 12 2011 at 19:49

You've gotten some good ideas from others about things you can try. But, if you want to try adding in some brown rice, I would definitely soak/ferment it with an acid first (or use the method you linked to). If you feel better, great! There is no reason to hold fast to dogma if it isn't working for you.

It's only been two weeks, but as an IBS sufferer, I know 2 weeks can seem like an eternity. If rice is something you want to try, I say go for it. I don't eat much rice, but when I do, it is generally white rice with sushi. This doesn't personally cause me ill effects. It has been years since I have had brown rice. You might also try various starchy carbs if you aren't already. Pumpkin, sweet potato, etc. have a decent amount of fiber if you think that is what you need to get yourself going.

I am eating starchy tubers/roots with lunch and dinner, although my sense is they are bloating me. I feel like I'm in a catch-22. But thanks for your suggestion. I will try upping them or trying different types. – Renee Nov 12 2011 at 19:47

Try adding saurkraut to the mix as well...I've hears that can really help from others with the same issue, otherwise theres lots of really good solutions here :)

Lots of FODMAPs in cabbage though... – Jay Nov 12 2011 at 18:25

Well I'm very suprised. Not too many people don't get better from IBS with Paleo. My guess is that you are still drinking coffee, or eating chocolate. Otherwise, strict Paleo should be the best thing for your IBS. Coffee isn't Paleo.

i haven't drunk coffee for about 15 years. No chocolate, no dairy, no gluten, low-FODMAPs, no cruciferous veg. – Renee Nov 12 2011 at 19:43
....I'm stumped then, let me know if adding SAD back in helps – Henry S Nov 12 2011 at 19:48
...are you taking a probiotic supplement to beef up the good bacteria in your digestive tract? – eatsmeatnleaves Jan 27 2012 at 13:58

After not eating it for awhile, I find that white rice suits me better, and it is better on my stomach if I get the majority of my fiber from non-grain sources like greens, squash, avocado and nuts.

If you have been 6 weeks strict paleo, you will be able to add these things back in and see whether you will get a reaction. You stomach will more than likely soon tell you if it doesn't agree. Have you tried upping your fat content? this can help with regularity. Also drink a glass of water as soon as you rise, staying hydrated is a must for regular bowel movements.

Well my stomach is upset 24/7 to begin with, so I'm not sure if adding things in will tell me a lot. As for fat, I'm eating a lot,b but my last stool test showed malabsorption of fats, so my naturopath actually suggested I reduce my fat intake since it's just going through me anyways. – Renee Nov 12 2011 at 19:44
Ah I see, I hope you resolve your issues soon! – Carly Nov 13 2011 at 22:45

I was gluten free and on the paleo diet for 4 months. My IBS-C got to point that I experienced agonizing pain every single day. So, I'm back to white bread, white rice and as much soluble non-irritating fibre as I can stomach. Of course I eat small portions thru out the day as large meals are a trigger for me. This seems to be helping. My attacks are not as frequent and of shorter duration. I haven't come up with the perfect diet yet but I do follow the advice of Heather Van Vorous, the best IBS source of information I've come across so far.

huh, the Heather Van Vorous stuff always made me much worse. You should try ditching the white bread and going for haiga rice cooked in a good gelatin-rich stock – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Mar 31 2012 at 2:05

Have you checked to see if you have low stomach acid? I've had digestion problems for years, and as soon as I started taking Betaine HCL - everything normalized. Here's a great article to read more about it: http://scdlifestyle.com/2012/03/3-tests-for-low-stomach-acid. Also, I've been Paleo for about a month... and had to put white rice back in my diet. I was just too hungry all the time.. Adding rice has calmed my constant hunger pains. Rice didn't bother my stomach at all which was a relieve. Now if my sleep patterns would go back to normal I'd be good.
