So right now, I'm battling a cold (rare sight, indeed, on Paleo foods...) and have an insatiable appetite. I'm listening to my body and eating Paleo foods until satisfaction (not totally jam-packed), but am eating ridiculous amounts...Is this anything to be worried about? I have read lots of posts about people who do IF instead. I don't tend to feel hungry during fevers, but an itchy throat or weak, tired feeling gets me ravenous like no other?

Well, a little bit different here because I had the flu last week (sans fever, so that may be it) and not a cold, but was RAVENOUS for the first couple of days. So I ate and ate and ate good food, supposing my body needed the nutrition to fight it off.

I haven't had a cold/flu in forever...caught me by surprise. The reason I think it's the flu and not a cold is I only really had one day of major upper respiratory symptoms. Most was very slight congestion (I could hear it in my voice rather than feel it), body aches and headache, dry cough, and general icky malaise. However, the other three residents in the house seem to have a cold. shrug

But yeah, I'd say if your body is hungrier than normal, eat. It needs the food.

I've always been able to distinguish between a cold and the flu by appetite. With a cold, I am like you hungry for food, particularly citrus although it can hurt my throat. I was always hungry for toast and ginger ale, so it will be interesting when I get a cold on primal but I think I'll hit the bone broth hard and whatever else sounds good.

With flu, I have a higher fever and don't want to eat. I have to force myself to sip broth. I don't usually have an appetite until a few days in at least.

Hope you feel better soon! And don't worry, if you're hungry eat. My mom used the old folk saying, "Starve a fever, stuff a cold."

+1 for the old saying. It's held true for me. – Nemesis Nov 13 2011 at 20:57

If you are eating quality food and holding it down, I say eat. Make sure you are getting your fluids. I personally think the body needs the nutrients to fight off the bad sh*t that's making you feel poorly (note that I'm an attorney and not a doctor...).

In the UK we have a saying "Feed a cold, starve a fever".

See my comment above--my mom said, "Starve a fever, stuff a cold." Pretty close! – Nance Nov 13 2011 at 18:31

I'm so glad you posted this question. I got my first cold in years this past week and have been much hungrier than normal. My normal two meals per day were just not cutting it. Although, the hunger seemed more driven by mental cravings than actual stomach hunger. I too have always heeded the mantra "Feed a cold, starve a fever." Nice to know that, at least anecdotally, hunger may accompany rhinovirus.
