I'm starting to wonder what vitamins and minerals I should be supplementing to keep at my healthiest. I've heard some stuff about multivitamins and fish oil, but I'm curious what I should/shouldn't be taking, how much, and what brands you have all found to include the lowest levels of chemical additives (or if that is even a concern).

For a bit of background, I'm a 24 year old man, 6'4", ~210lbs, diet is primal (but I have a hard time paying up for fish so I rarely eat it), and I am currently physically inactive. I've joined a Crossfit onramp that starts in two weeks, so I want to be sure that I'm getting everything I need to cope with the added stress on my body and to get into peak physical condition.

Thanks, all, for your help!

If you are a fit paleo and eating well you need only one in my opinion. PQQ that is it. – The Quilt Nov 13 2011 at 15:53
On Tuesday or Wednesday I will lay out the Post script for the Leptin Rx. This topic is covered. – The Quilt Nov 13 2011 at 15:54

I'm not going to advocate supplementation in lieu of a whole food diet of course. Having said that if you are interested in this topic, I think the best all around coverage of this topic in one place is from Paul Jaminet / Perfect Health Diet <:)

Another good summary is from Chris Kresser - http://chriskresser.com/9-steps-to-perfect-health-4-supplement-wisely

Good luck!!!

Just like with food, nobody can tell you what's best for you. You'll have to experiment to find out what works for you. These are some general guidelines :

  • Most important vitamins most of us should be taking include Vitamin D3 & fish oil.
  • Magnesium help most of us. Best taken 2 hours before going to bed.
  • High doses of vitamin C can be very handy during those cold winter months.

But really, as long as you feel/look good you don't need supplements. In fact, very often supplements make things worse.

If you buy supplements, I'd buy them from iHerb. The Now Foods brand has very cool ingredient lists.

Thanks Korion! I'm curious- how can supplements make things worse? – Billerson Nov 14 2011 at 19:49
Side effects. If you take supplements you don't need, you'll probably have bowel issues. – Korion Nov 15 2011 at 8:50
They can also reduce cash flow. ;) – AlohaSpeck Nov 28 2011 at 15:52
