I've decide to supplement DHEA 50mg daily based on my test results. I'm post/menopausal and my levels are characteristically low. Anyone have any information on what I can expect in terms of effects? Are they noticeable? Also how often should I retest?

If I start growing a beard I shall stop supplementing immediately!

Fairly quickly. Within a week. Better verbal fluency, greater sense of well-being were effects I noticed. Make sure to get blood tests down the road to adjust dosage up/down.

It had a great effect on my energy levels and mood, but I am afraid I have to report that facial hair also occurred ... it's off for electrolysis for me.

Better sleep, mood and energy in just a few days. I tested very low and probably won't test again until next year. I have been taking a low amount, about 2-3 weeks and then at least a week off.

There is a subset of the population that reacts negatively to DHEA supplementation, it can cause large spikes in blood pressure. For that reason I would not recommend starting at anywhere near a 50 mg/day dose. It also tends to raise estrogen levels, something potentially beneficial post menopause, but undesirable for most males.

Dr. Ray Sahelien was once one of the strongest proponents of supplementing this hormone, even authoring "DHEA, A Practical Guide" in the mid 1990s with a suggested 25 mg/day dose. He now suggests 5 mg/day maximum, with frequent blood pressure monitoring, and cautions that long term effects of supplementation are not known: http://www.raysahelian.com/dhea.html

Hope this helps -

You can try offsetting any excess oestrogen with DIM (I agree with dosing and proceeding with caution). – panteleimon Nov 18 2011 at 10:30
