I have 20/20 or close to it but get bad computer eye strain. Granted Im on my work and home computer often as well as my iphone. I noticed that going without sunglasses and getting plenty of natural light helps to "reset" my eyes and eases the eye strain and helps my eyes focus properly again. I was wondering if any other practical solutions were out there.

I was also told about Gunnar glasses. Is there any other cheap alternatives? I remember in the "Hack my Sleep" thread someone presented a $6 solution to $60 glasses

Here's the Gunnars

Download a program called f.lux--it adjusts the blue spectrum emitted by your pc monitor and is adjustable to whatever level of orangey-pink you're comfortable with. stereopsis.com/flux – Nemesis Nov 16 2011 at 1:18

When you are focusing closely at something for a long period of time, because it's a muscle, it tends to want to "stay" in that position. When you look away, it takes the muscle a little while to "relax" in order to refocus. Practice the 20/20/20 rule- every 20 minutes, look up and focus on an object 20 feet away (or far away as possible) for 20 seconds. This is what I tell my presbyopic patients and it seems to help.

This is the key. I cannot emphasize it enough. Keep in mind that it may take your eyes more than 20 seconds to re-focus. Keep looking at the faraway object until you get your focus back. * Also, there are programs that can beep a little reminder at you every so often. – J. Stanton - gnolls.org Nov 16 2011 at 5:17

Have you tried to move your monitor away from you and take breaks? I always have a monitor that's at least 3 feet away and I never experience eye strain. I make sure the ambient light is bright enough as well. May be worth a shot.

I Second proper ambient light. I'm a software engineer and behind my computer regularly. When the ambient is dark, and my monitor is bright, eye strain kicks in within 10 minutes. But if I can turn on a light to keep the brightness of the room near that of my monitor, i'm good. – Omid Khalili Nov 16 2011 at 1:01
