Just wondering what type and amount people recommend for iodine supplementation. I have tried to be fastidious with seaweed but I am not happy with my consistency and I'm not sure what kind of dose I am getting.

I know you should start at a low dose and slowly bring it up. But I'm not sure what that looks like.

Does anyone have recommendations as far as brands, doses, and protocols.

I probably eat seafood about once a week. I also don't have a specific issues I am trying to address with iodine. Though my GF has tested at slightly low thyroid levels and she would also trying this supplement.

Thanks

Have a look at Paul Jaminet's recommendations for supplementation on his website:

Supplement and Food Recommendations

He gives you some concrete recommendations for quantity and also some recommendations for particular brands to buy.

You should also look at this page, which discusses the connection between iodine and selenium that Daz just alluded to:

Iodine and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Part 2

And some links from there.

Yes exactly that. The key is to move slowly to avoid potential problems. Just because somebody could start with lots doesn't mean everyone can. – Stabby Nov 16 2011 at 1:58
@WCC Paul: Thanks that seems like a lot of supplements they are recommending but it's good to know about the selenium connection. @Stabby: Yeah I have heard about the need to slowly up the dose and definitely plan on being conservative with it myself. No need to cause a problem where there isn't one. – iodized Nov 16 2011 at 2:32
agreed on the Paul Jaminet site. i use it all the time. – daz Nov 16 2011 at 3:10
Paul Jaminet (aka the other Paul) gives a plan for the moving slow thing that Stabby mentions. You can see it in my first link in the iodine part of the chart. – Paul Nov 16 2011 at 3:28

personally, before i started supplementing with Iodine, i made sure i was getting enough selenium first (in my case mainly from supps. currently 225mcg selenium per day from supps in various selenium forms)

i then started on mcg doses of potassium iodide, but did not seem to tolerate it well, so i stopped.

then i started on 1 drop of Iosol (1,830mcg) per day which i had not adverse reactions to. i currently take 2 drops Iosol (3.66mg) per day (tho can vary between 1 & 3 drops per day for no particular reason).

i actually built up to as high as 10 drops of Iosol (18mg) per day with no adverse reactions. but now higher doses don't seem to make much difference, maybe my iodine stores are now replete.

when you didn't tolerate it well what were your symptoms? Also do you know what the difference the two you have tried are? – iodized Nov 16 2011 at 2:34

after 2 or 3 days of potassium iodide (even as small as 150mcg per day), my throat started feel sore or swollen & i felt a bit "flu-ey". If i stopped the potass iodide these symptoms would go away, usually with 24 to 48 hrs. The Iosol solution is approx 50% iodine & 50% ammonium iodide (no potassium iodide). Other ingredients listed=Glycerine (Vegetarian). – daz Nov 16 2011 at 2:52
