So I have been noticing lately, how all kids eat boogers. I tend to look at kids, to see how most things are done naturally. Is booger eating a natural occurance? Is there a reason we should/shouldn't eat our boogers? Any chance it builds immunities, or aids in allergy prevention?

Boogers, according to Dr. Friedrich Bischinger, are valuable immune boosting little nuggets of gold. HAHAHA

i thought they were nuggets of green – sage_ Nov 16 2011 at 3:06
@sage, they're only green if you're sick. @AshleyRoz, Great article! Trust an Austrian to come up with this nugget... @Erik of Rockford, why not do a n=1 experiment and see if you get less sick this winter? you can report back on your immune status this spring. – gydle Nov 16 2011 at 7:19
I mean the Austrian is the doctor suggesting this, not you! – gydle Nov 16 2011 at 7:20
I really think I might...Anyone wish to join me? – Erik of Rockford Nov 16 2011 at 12:15

I think a facedesk is more appropriate here. – Phazo Nov 16 2011 at 3:58
I know, I thought I was just weird for thinking this at first too. But then I just kept seeing more and more kids eating their boogers, and realized it can't be a learned behavior, and there must be some reason that kids feel the need to eat this stuff. – Erik of Rockford Nov 16 2011 at 12:18
As an aside, now when one googles "eat boogers" guess what comes up on page 1? Paleohacks! At least its below the fold ...for today. – Shari Bambino Nov 16 2011 at 16:08

By the same token, kindergarten glue is the long-sought perfect food. But only for weird little girls named 'Ruthie'.

I'm typing this sentence so I can give my one-word answer, "Ewww!"

Anyhow, young kids put everything in their mouths and I haven't started eating toys, clothes or rocks yet either.

:-))

But isnt that why we need to supplement with vitamins, minerals, and probiotics? Because we are not ingesting this stuff as much as we should? – Erik of Rockford Nov 16 2011 at 12:13

If your ever in the situation were you must drink your own urine to survive I propose you also eat your boogers.

I do understand were the question comes from, and agree. I see my sons do the grok squat effortlessly and other animalistic movements that come natural that we seem to grow out of. I'm all for not washing my fruits and veggies when they come from my home organic garden to get some good stuff out of that. I feel like hyperwashing everything we ingest has some negative effect but I still do it with market goods.

I must admit though that I have actually never witnessed either of my boys nor do I actually recall ever eating boogers as a child. So as this seems to be a rare event even in children I'll abstain and not feel like I'm missing out. I just bought some local raw honey though for the whole allergy thing :)

I'm not recommending the practice, but as a former public school teacher, I can assure you it is not a rare event. Not. Rare. At. All. – Kewpie Nov 16 2011 at 2:11

Really? You've never seen a child eat a booger? I've never seen a child NOT eat a booger after having a nice pick! All of my kids ate them, so did every niece and nephew. – KellyBamboo Nov 16 2011 at 2:12
Really? I have a 2 and 4 year old and have yet to see either of them do this....maybe I'm just blocking it out. lol. – JayJay Nov 16 2011 at 2:13
No, I've seen kids do it... I mean if you get a good juicy one I thought the norm was to hit a window with it to see how good it stuck. So I guess it comes to were you a flinger or an eater. – JayJay Nov 16 2011 at 2:16
Seriously...if i'm ever finding myself in a situation where I gotta drink my own pee or eat my own boogers....shoot me. Just shoot me. Then feel free to go all caveman on me to survive. Yeah...i'm a wuss like that. – Karin Nov 16 2011 at 2:22

I read an article about it once that said it helps expose us to small amounts of things we encounter in our environment so that we can build immunity to them... so maybe.
