I seem to be going through them really quickly; the beef cooked in butter is divine. But the packages are a bit pricey and I'm wondering if I'm being a bit overindulgent.

How many meals can you stretch out of 1 lb of beef?

2-3. Depends what I mix with it... – Daniel Kirsner Nov 19 2011 at 4:50

2 meals out of 1/2 a kg of mince. Though not a big fan of mince, unless you know the butcher and know the source of the meat, you really know what you are getting. i much prefer whole pieces of meat in its original form. – FuelRestMotion Nov 20 2011 at 4:11

One meal or less.

That would be 2 meals for me.

In my olden low carb days, that would have been 2 servings. I find that after a few years of so much meat we don't need that much of it anymore. So now, if we're eating it straight up (like burgers or meatballs or something) 1 lb would be 4 servings. If we're using it in something (like soup or chili) it could end up being more like 6 servings.

2 meals for me too. I get it for $6/lb at my farmers mkt. what do you pay?

5.50. I get 2.5 meals usually so I guess it ain't as pricey as I'm making it out to be. – Phazo Nov 19 2011 at 4:39
you're paying $2.20 per meal.. that's like eating at mcdonalds! Add in a couple of eggs and a sweet potato and you're still under $5/meal – Jeff Nov 19 2011 at 4:42

$9.00 per pound (organic, grass fed) at my northern California Whole Foods. Two options: 10 percent fat or less; 16 percent fat or thereabouts. I'm on an IF diet/exercise plan, hence consume around 1.5 lbs protein per day. Ground beef + broccoli's a favorite. Salmon + broccoli. slaw, tomato, another. Man, I so love eating simple, clean, and real. – Dorado Galore Nov 20 2011 at 19:04

Three to Four. Sometimes Two!

I make four burgers with one pound which would be four meals for me unless I was super hungry. However, there are three of us so it actually only makes one meal.

ETA: I pay $5/lb. if I buy it at the farmers' market, but as part of my meat share it comes out to around $4.25/pound

4 oz. Burger = hunger for me. Adding one more ounce makes te difference. – AdrianaG Nov 19 2011 at 14:44
I'm just the opposite. A 4 oz. burger leaves me satisfied. Any more and I feel overstuffed. Interestingly, this only applies to ground beef. I can eat more than 4 oz. of steak, chops, roasts, fish, chicken, turkey, etc. – Kewpie Nov 19 2011 at 15:23

Ignore my prior answer. It's one meal for one person most likely. Sometimes I can make it one meal for two people.

I live with my 17-yr-old grandson; need I say more? :-))

What usually happens is he eats 3/4 of the package and I get 1/4. It works out fine, because I usually add fat since it's 85/15 and when I add a salad and cooked veggies I'm plenty full.

If it were just me, a pound would last at least 2 probably 3 meals.

one usually for just me. If Its me and my two boys(4 and 2 years old) we eat two pounds in a single meal. My wife is not big on it so she gets fish or some other thing usually.

and i usually only eat 2 meals a day.

Never more than one. Often half. But then I usually don't eat more than two meals per day.

2-3 meals. Sometimes burgers are 5 oz., other times 8.

Usually one meal. Can be two meals, but that's usually dinner and supper, and they're 3 hours apart, and only if each half-lb pittance is supplemented with 3-4 eggs.

I bought some for the first time a few weeks ago, I paid $7.00 per lb. I'm glad I didn't put it on the bar b q because it didn't hold together like the regular hamburger. I added 1 egg to the hamburger and fried it in a pan, It was delicious, I think I got 5 burgers, but they shrunk a lot when they were cooked, I know I paid a lot but I live in an area that doesn't have grass fed beef and when I found it, I had to buy it!

I try to make it last atleast 3 meals. I'm on a budget, though.

1/2kg mince and 1/2kg veggies equals 2 meals for me. Its pretty much what I take to work for lunch most days.

3 meals. I keep my protein as low as possible.

1 meal + some leftovers: me, husband, 6 year old picky eater who loves meat, and ravenous, carnivorous 20 month old. If I use it for tacos/lettuce wraps, it's gone. If I use it for chili, we usually have leftovers for one or two lunches.

With bacon, liver, or eggs, that's four meals. With no other meat or eggs, two meals.

Ermmmmm...one. However, I only buy 85/15 ground beef at $7-ish a pound, then eat it with a (conventional) sweet potato mashed in beef fat. That brings my meal to a grand total of eight dollars. My lunch is a mere two tins of salmon or tuna, though - I eat ten or eleven dollars worth of food a day. To put that in perspective, my teenage sister and cousins also eat ten to eleven (maybe more, I have no idea how to measure their snackage) dollars a day of pop tarts, breakfast cereals, zone perfect bars, and fast food.

To stretch dollars I would halve the ground beef, maybe quarter it, and add more sweet potatoes and butter to the meal, with an egg or two for extra protein and nutrients. Conversely, I would keep my meals the same and cut costs in other places. ORRR do both at the same time.

Meat is the main focus of most of my meals. 1 lb of grassfed ground is about 1 meal with some left over. I'd say 2 lbs. is 3 meals, maybe. If I'm making burgers, that's two good sized burgers. I don't try to stretch it further. If you are, then add a ton of vegetables like a stir-fry. Tubers as others have suggested is of course a great idea as well.

One meal after a hard workout, 2 meals otherwise.

I usually make 2 pounds into 5 patties for lunches and the occasional breakie or contingency meal.

We're a family of 4: me, DF, 3.5 year old DD & 2.5 year old DS. 0.5kg would do us for one meal with perhaps a little left over. However, not enough for all four. I'd say it would be about 5-6 servings.

3 large servings or 4 normal servings.
