Hello.
I would like to know which tests I shound run in a hospital, if I wanted to gather as much information as possible about causes and issues connected with my gut problems? My symptomps have changed since my disease developed 10 months ago, some subsided/dissappered, some didn't. In general after adapting many paleo ideas ( mostly from Perfect Health Diet, Chriss Kesser and lately I have been experiencing with GAPS ) I got better, but I stil have problems. My symptomps can be related to many well known gut diseases/issues like leaky gut, IBS, IBD or parasites. At the moment mostly I have constipation as well as bloating and fatigue after eating something.
I am considering doing:
- colonoscopy
- fecal tests
- blood
- allergy/food intolerances ( btw is there any merit in this in my case? )
any other suggestions? And also is there a way to check the gut permeability?
Thank you in advance for any help.

Are you eating carbs? What are you eating – Bill1102inf Nov 21 2011 at 14:31
I don't have direct experience with this, but Paul Jaminet recommended the Metametrix GI Effects stool test at his NYC talk last weekend. – Gazelle Nov 21 2011 at 17:32
Recently I started GAPS diet eating for the first few days only pure bone broth. Now I add to my soups red meat, beef tallow, tuber vegetables like beets and carrots + leafy ones like broccoli and egg yolks. From today I am slowly reintroducing dairy with one tbsp of homemade kefir daily. Nevertheless symptoms still occur. Sooner or later I will need to add more carbs, cause my organism can't function normally too long with less than 80-100 grams a day. – caban Nov 21 2011 at 17:34
@ Gazelle the problem is I live in Poland, so I need to know about what exact tests I have to ask my doctor – caban Nov 21 2011 at 17:35
I did a breath test to screen for SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) in the gastro department of my hospital. Your doctor should be able to order that for you. – Renee Nov 21 2011 at 17:46

This doesn't speak to tests you can get, but while you're dealing with health care professionals you could try home remedies (if you haven't already.)

Are you able to tolerate any fermented foods? What types/type of probiotics have you tried? My very cranky gut has become very happy now that I've been off sugar for 7 months and use 2 probiotics: home-made water kefir and full-fat yogurt. It actually took me awhile to accustom myself to having a pain-free digestive process, because I missed all the sensations I'd always had.

Actually I was always of the opinion that each person should be its own docter in the first instance. I am againts most of the standard western medical treatmens, but I don't want to be biased anymore in one direction. Also it would be more helpful If I exactly knew what is the root of the problem. I have started treating myself long ago with many positive results. Proper diet and yes, some fermented foods ( at first soured goat milk, atm homemade kefir and sauerkraut + primal defense probiotics ), but thank you anyway :). – caban Dec 7 2011 at 22:54

Genova Diagnostics is a lab with regarded-as-reliable tests (as far as I've seen the consensus on various online nutrition forums): http://www.gdx.net/

If you click on Tests on their menu, you can search their dozens of tests by disease, symptom, wellness goal, biomarker, etc. They do have a test for gut permeability, as well as plenty of other specialized diagnostics. Note that a physician who has registered with Genova will need to prescribe these tests -- you can search for such physicians in your area. Good luck! :)

Unfortunately they don't have any distributors in my country :(. – caban Nov 21 2011 at 17:29
