The only way to do that is to heal yourself slowly with good food, sleep, and patience. Those cleanses are nonsense. – Chickenosaurus Rex Nov 23 2011 at 19:35

Wrong Chickenosaurus Rex.. a bacon fat enema works wonders. I recommend letting it cool a bit first though. – CaveDad Mar 28 2012 at 20:08
Why an enema? Just eat lots of bacon, once you get too much fat, you'll get the runs, and that will be that. – raydawg Mar 29 2012 at 0:27

I didn't do a cleanse, I just started eating strict Paleo. I ate small amounts of fat, then more and more. Before Paleo I was not able to eat even just one egg, or even a couple nuts, I'd get gallbladder pain, plus I'd have to hurry to the bathroom with vomiting and diarrhea.

After ditching grains and sugar, I haven't had problem again, I eat very well now. Fatty beef, fatty pork, 3 eggs cooked in bacon grease. It's a miracle... Hmm, ok, no, it's just science! :-)

Thanks, Mom, for making me Paleo again.

Update, I had a small (but painful) gallbladder attack this Wednesday, the first and only since I started Paleo. That gallbladder attack was after I fell off the Paleo bandwagon BIG TIME, I was eating flour products nearly every single day, sugar. I cried on that day because of the pain, then cut the bad food again. I haven't had pain again. PHEW!!! Lesson learned, don't test faith! I'm okay now. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 27 2011 at 1:18
If anyone's curious what I did. Ok, first off, ultrasound and cat scan (or whichever one you drink a cup of dye for) showed large inflamed/infected gallbladder + a few 1.7 cm gallstones. Just for reference. Anyway, once I got home, here's what I did from then on: ate very small meals. At first it was just salads with chicken, very low fat. No fiber, no grains or sugars. My mom would cook me things with more and more fat (just a little at each meal). If it was OK eating that, next time she'd give me a little more fat. I could eat pork shoulder, egg, cod fish, but... – a mesmerizing trickster Dec 19 2011 at 7:13

... mostly, I was eating low-fiber salads and berries, with plain low-fat meats. After a few weeks of my mom's diet, I could eat NORMALLY. I went to a doctor's appointment and I was feeling much better (except sleep deprived due to new heart medication, but atleast no longer sleep deprived because of pain, LOL ). I hope this helps someone... I know, I know, my mom is awesome... but she's MINE!, you can't have her :D – a mesmerizing trickster Dec 19 2011 at 7:17

Most of the liver/gallbladder cleanses you see on the internet are nonsense. There are foods and nutrients out there that are good for your liver and bile, but sucking down a quart of olive oil is probably not going to do much good for anything.

I am almost concerned that those cleanses cause the gallstones that are "flushed out" later due to the amount of oil chugging. – Jackie Nov 23 2011 at 19:35

I believe people have investigated the so-called "stones" that come out in the bowel movements and determined that they are soap clods formed in an interaction of the olive oil and digestive enzymes. Someone claimed to have mixed a lot of red food dye in with the olive oil, then when the cut a "stone" in half, it was red on the inside. A stone passing from your gallbladder would not have absorbed the red dye. – Paleo2.0 Nov 23 2011 at 20:23
How could someone even pass a gallstone? The holes in the gallbladder are for liquid bile to come out, how could the holes become big enough for the (ginourmous) stones to come out? Hmm... I know in Portugal, there is surgery to remove gallstones FROM the gallbladder, and then the gallbladder is sewn and you keep it. But here in USA you only have the choice to yank out the gallbladder itself, I think. Maybe someone took a picture from those removed gallstones. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 27 2011 at 1:20

I had gallstones confirmed via ultrasound. I see a naturopath who gave me Stone Breaker by HerbPharm (chanca piedra). 2 bottles later, I had another ultrasound - my 12cm stone had reduced to 4cm, small enough to pass through the gallbladder neck.

12cm in diameter or circumference? – air_hadoken Mar 28 2012 at 20:31

Whatever you do, don't let them remove your gallbladder. – raydawg Mar 29 2012 at 0:28

Friend: Hey, you are studying nutrition, what kind and brand of cleanse would you recommend?

Me: Water bottle.

But honestly, those cleanses are a grab at your wallet. Nothing that is a "fast fix" is going to have any lasting effects. All you can do is heal yourself, give it time, and try and enjoy the process!
