My copy of The Paleo Solution is on loan. Can someone give me a quick run-down of Robb Wolf's auto-immune protocol? My husband's asthma was in pretty strong "remission" but a few months of working ridiculous hours and eating poorly has brought it back. We both want him to get really strict with his diet for a little while.
I took this directly from Robb's website in the FAQ section.
Autoimmunity Emerging research has made clear the link between Neolithic foods (grains, legumes and dairy) and autoimmune diseases such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis and a host of other less well know conditions. Many people have found significant improvements in autoimmune disease by eliminating the Neolithic foods and building a diet around nutritious Paleo options. If you suffer from an autoimmune disease we highly recommend you start a Paleo diet and let us know what your results are. To give your body its best chance to heal we recommend that you initially limit the following foods:
Peppers including bell peppers and hot peppers Spices such as curries, paprika, and chili powder.
Some of these otherwise Paleo-friendly foods have been shown to be problematic in individuals with autoimmune issues. We recommend you fully remove not only these foods but also all Neolithic foods (grains, breads, potatoes, beans and dairy) for at least a month to see if they pose a problem for you.
I have also heard him say in his pod casts to not eat nuts and seeds, to watch out for emulsifiers in foods...such as gaur gum, soy lecithin etc, and to limit the consumption of fruit, as all of those things can be gut irritants.
Like he said, have your husband remove all these things for 30 days and when he adds something back in, he may find he is able to tolerate it.

Going on 2 years now with no need for inhalers!
And yes, my diet is dialed in already.
The list is:
All grains and legumes including peanuts, all industrial and seed oils (soy, canola, corn, "vegetable oil", sunflower, safflower, etc.). This is a permanent one.
The ones to test after 30 days:
Nightshades (tomato, peppers, eggplant, tobacco) Eggs Dairy Nuts
One thing to add to these. Before I went paleo I could eat eggs with no issue. After the first 30 days or so, I couldn't stand the whites - I just couldn't digest them. A few months later, I could eat eggs again without issue. (I also had huge issues with acid reflux in the first 2-3 weeks which healed after removing dairy - probably related to not having a gall bladder anymore.
Turns out since I didn't have a gallbladder, I need to take "Now Superenzymes" before every meal. The protocol with this is to take one pill at a time - no more than 5, until you feel warmth in your stomach. For me, 2-3 + one Betaine HCL is the perfect balance right before each meal, and avoiding too many liquids during meals to allow digestion.
Our bodies do weird things during the elimination phase, and something you might not be able to eat immediately after that time, might be your favorite food a few months later.
Unless it's a huge life threatening allergy, it's worth testing each food several times.
I think what happens is that initially we start to heal our leaky guts, but we might not yet have all the minerals we need (magnesium, potassium, iodine, zinc, etc.), and things aren't in balance. As further healing occurs, we have all the right stuff to be able to produce enough stomach acid, and the proper enzymes to digest things which only a month ago we didn't.
One thing that really helps heal our guts is coconut oil. It has other positive effects also such as appetite suppressant, weight loss via heart rate increase, and as a source of ketones via MCT. (Sadly, some people are allergic to coconut, so YMMV.)

I am a type 1 diabetic, new to paleo and am about a week in. I gave up dairy today and eggs will be next. grains were easy for me, but I was still eating cheese and eggs. The nightshades are also pretty easy for me to give up. I think I will do the 30 days and see what my overall insulin needs turn out like compared to pre-paleo when I ate bags of baby carrots and cups of crackers. I like the idea of "dialing in" - that makes this seem approachable. All at once is a bit overwhelming. So far though, my insulin needs have dropped quite a bit, and that makes my motivation soar!!!
so as of now, the autoimmune protocol for me is no wheat or grain or legumes no dairy no nightshade no processed anything only natural fats inherent in the meat or olive oil, pumpkinseed oil and coconut oil little fruit if any
