I am currently trying out leangains and paleo. For now, I am doing OK for cutting weight pre competition by eating a lot of sweet potatoes. However, I need to up my carb intake later. How do you get enough carbs?

I am currently eating untill I'm very full, and still a bit too low. Do any of you have some suggestions?

Ah, palatinose and buckwheat are okay in a pinch but mention rice and the dogma police come out? Some of us here do in fact eat white rice as a "safe" starch that is relatively free of the anti-nutrients/toxins that are found in most grains. See perfecthealthdiet.com for more. – Beth-WeightMaven Nov 25 2011 at 23:55

What part of "white rice [is] a 'safe' starch that is relatively free of the anti-nutrients/toxins that are found in most grains" doesn't explain why some of us are "reasoning" ourselves to include it in our diets? – Beth-WeightMaven Nov 26 2011 at 1:36

Well, the newbie is going to have to learn sooner or later that some folks do orthodox paleo (a la Cordain), others do a modified version that includes dairy (a la Mark Sisson), and still others do a fairly liberal version that (shocker) includes rice and potatoes (a la Kurt Harris/Paul Jaminet). – Beth-WeightMaven Nov 26 2011 at 2:52

It is funny how some people don’t have a problem with coffee or “paleo” baked goods or artificial sweeteners or butter or cream or cured bacon or Leptin Resets, but mention of white rice brings out the Paleo Police. Somebody needs to start AncestralHacks so the Cordain purists can use PaleoHacks to argue about how many eggs per day a hunter-gatherer could gather and whether or not plants indigenous to the Americas are allowed. – Paleo2.0 Nov 26 2011 at 3:37

I usually take sweet potatoes and bananas. The possibilities with those alone are endless, e.g. banana-coconut smoothie, yam fries, baked banana.

I've made sweet potato and banana cake with chocolate and berries. Super yummy, but I would like eat something else as well! The recipie is as follows: 4 sweet potatoes 4-6 bananas (depending of the size of the potatoes) berries and chocolate after own wish. Cook and mash potatoes, mash bananas, blend together, add berries and chocolate. Bake in over untill desired consistency. – Lars Nov 26 2011 at 1:57

Take something a little sweet, like berries and add it in after you are full.

When you are full up on regular food, you will always have room for desert.

I am not super familiar with the lean gains approach, but if you want more carbs something sweeter is the way to go when you are "full"

I've been on paleo LeanGains for a few months, and carb intake on training days is also the biggest challenge I'm facing - along with the restrictions low fat intake on training days puts in the diet but that's another topic. I have poor appetite, so I need carb-dense foods to get to the 350g of carbs I currently take.

My main go-tos are honey, dates, sultanas, figs, sweet potatos, fruit, home-made coconut ice "cream," and palatinose and buckwheat in a shake when eating just gets too much and you don't care about being dogmatic about paleo.
