I've been enjoying 85% dark chocolate with tea as one of my staple treats. I've noticed though that my skin coloring hasn't been looking so great lately (a little oily, too), and I've been breaking out here and there. When I first adopted a paleo lifestyle, my skin was pristine. Do you think my recent skin issues could possibly be related to my chocolate consumption? I haven't been eating chocolate for two days and my skin is looking bright again. Could this be correlated? Also, sometimes I notice slight stomach discomfort after eating chocolate too.

could be a copper vs. zinc imbalance (chocolate = high in copper)... that would yet not really explain the stomach discomfort. Also 85% is still 15% sugar ;) |

If the chocolate contains sugar and you don't usually eat sugar it could be because the sugar is increasing your metabolism. Try taking 10000iu vit A next time you eat chocolate and see if that helps. The stomach discomfort could be caused by additives(specifically soy lecithin) if your chocolate contains that stuff. |

Apparently chocolate is a gluten cross-reactor. Do you break out when you eat wheat? How long have you been paleo? You may be in the process of healing a leaky gut, and anything that disturbs the healing (ie. gluten cross reactors) could cause skin/stomach problems. I'd probably stay away from chocolate for a while, keep eating clean paleo, then maybe try some more in a few months. |

That's why I stopped eating chocolate-dark or not-all together. I get pimples within next 4-24 hours of ingesting anything chocolate. |

Experimentation is part of this way of eating. Eliminate chocolate completely and see how you feel. There may be other affects from the chocolate which you haven't connected yet. You can always resume chocolate at any time(or not) after having gained some knowledge of how it affects you. Chocolate is not really Paleo. Neither are supplements. |

I get really bad acne from chocolate as well, even with brands that don't have any additives. I'm afraid you might have to give up on it. |

Interesting. I have very sensitive, oily, dry, acne-prone skin, but most of my problems went away when I went paleo and sort of low-carb. I've been eating a lot of chocolate lately compared to before, 3-4 bars a week, but I haven't noticed any skin problems. The only thing that gives me bad skin these days is lack of sleep. |

Are you losing weight? Something has been giving me the odd breakout and someone told me it might be the stored toxins coming out when the fat is burned. I do hope it isn't the chocolate ... |

Try switching to just cocoa powder (either as hot chocolate with stevia, or mix it with coconut oil and hot water.) You could also go with 90% or 99% chocolate, though those are bitter. Maybe it's the dairy in the chocolate that you're reacting to. |

I was reading a story about a elite Kenyan runner once. After he ran a marathon one of the sponsors gave him a box of chocolates. He got sick after he ate a couple. Some people seem to get sick from chocolate. For him I doubt it was the sugar since 15-20% of his diet comes from granualated sugar in tea. I myself have eaten 85% chocolate on occassion usually a full bar over a period of an hour. I noticed that sometimes during the day I would get a bit of a stomach ache and other times I wouldn't usually I am fine if I eat it with milk or cream. I eat a lot of fruit sugar so I'm quite sure whatever made me feel sick was with the chocolate and not the sugar. |

That was very interesting about the zinc relationship and skin breakouts. Here is a theory based on reason and sensibility: 'cold sores' are a well-known face malady. The theory is they caused by a so-called virus at all, and that said virus is tertiary at most, and that the main issue for the body is zinc deficiency. Acne might not be all that different; another skin-communicated deficiency. It seems most reasonable to suggest these two symptoms, are variations of our bodies way of communicating a severe zinc deficiency. I have seen success with private clients, using zinc. We have primarily used a stomach-acid resistant tablet, 40mg, delivering 6,3mg of zinc to the body through the small intestine. 2x of these taken twice a day at the onset of symptoms, seems to provide relief. The sores heal up, almost immediately. |
