I bet this has been asked before, but I couldn't find anything.
Okay, so I really fell off the Paleo wagon, REALLY BAD for a while, and now I am becoming insulin resistant again. I get hungry twice at night time, for example, even when I have a nice big, filling, evening meal.

So I'm doing strict Paleo again. I know I will get better again, now that I'm back on track.
The (not serious, but very painful) gallbladder attack I had Wednesday night was enough to scare the boyfriend, so he promised he will stop buying me gluten, flour, junk. I would wake up in the morning to find a cupcake by my nightstand, for example :-O It's no one's fault but my own anyway, no one shoved the food down my throat. But little by little, I was eating bread, pasta, cupcakes, hamburger buns, pizza...

ANYWAY!
To help me deal with fake hunger at night, I would like a fat bomb... I know people eat coconut oil when they get that fake hunger, but I can't stand it straight.
I'm thinking of something I can keep in the fridge.

No dairy, no fruit, please. Probably no nuts either... but I might reconsider. The almond butter, coconut oil, and cocoa truffles I used to make were pretty decent.

(Edit: Coconut oil is OK)

What's up with paragraph formatting? My paragraphs got all jumbled up, so it sounds (more) incoherent (than my usual writing). Oh well. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 14:59
For paragraphs, add 2 spaces at the end of a phrase. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:39
That's a real nastey thing your boyfriend did. Were you losing too much weight for him to handle? Why the sabatoge? – shah78 Nov 26 2011 at 20:10
and why did YOU get so confused. This will be the fun part. Have you learned something that you can carry into the future and not have to learn it "again and again. – shah78 Nov 26 2011 at 20:13
Yes, lost 10 lbs since May, (when I should have gained weight because of new medication). I'm doing Paleo for health reasons, not necessarily weight loss. Could easily lose another 10-15 lbs, but it will come off with time. As for why he brings a cupcake? Don't know, he's a really forgetful guy. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 22:45

I made coconut bark and my husband devoured it. Got the idea off another thread. It did have fruit in it but you could omit that along with the maple syrup. I eyeballed all the ratios, so you'll have to experiment.

I melted coconut oil and coconut butter (Artisana brand; bought it at Whole Foods) in a sauce pain. Added shredded coconut, maple syrup and dried cranberries. Poured into a 9x9 pan--the level was about 1/2" thick. I put it in the fridge to harden, then cut it into rough pieces.

ETA: How about guacamole on celery? At its most basic, avocado+onion+salt+lime. Obviously, cilantro is traditional, but I also use flat parsley if that's all I have in the fridge. I also found that when I was first eating paleo and losing a lot of weight, I could have that "fat bomb" with dinner and not as a snack, and I'd be great. Lots of guacamole on grilled meat.

Good for you for staying away from nuts. They're wonderful in small doses, but the omega-6 level is too high for nightly fat bombs!

I love bark! Hmm, how about... coconut "cookies"... Melt coconut oil, and chocolate, in separate pans. Add coconut flakes to coconut oil, maybe some slivered almonds too. Add in melted chocolate, stirring to get nice swirls. Pour into round biscuit cutters, and refrigerate. How's that sound? :P I think the chocolate (not much) would be enough so the coconut oil isn't yucky. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:27

Guacamole is a great idea! I like it so much, my tongue doesn't for some reason :O I agree about the nuts, I can't think of any nutrients in there that I need and couldn't find anywhere else. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:28

Sometimes I end the day with a cup of tea with coconut oil or grass-fed butter (or a combination of the two). I do the same thing in the morning with coffee.

Me too. I often skip dinner and tea with melted coconut oil ensures I don't wake up too early because I'm hungry. – PaleoChimp Nov 26 2011 at 19:29
This sounds good, coconut oil would probably go well with my spearmint tea. ❥ – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 22:57

Yikes ... no dairy, no nuts, and no coconut oil? Presuming straight lard is out of the question, that kind of leaves things like bacon, pemmican and hard- or soft-boiled eggs. If you could tolerate the nuts, Nora Gedgaudas' nut ball snackers seem like an option.

Coconut oil is OK, I just don't want to eat it straight. – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:10

Have you tried coconut butter or creme? These are the ones that still have the meat of the coconut and so has more texture to it than straight coconut oil. I eat Artisana's coconut butter right out of the jar. Oy is it good! – Beth-WeightMaven Nov 26 2011 at 16:00

Maybe a little bit of fatty meat, like some ham or pate?

I think I already eat plenty of fatty meat. I can't stand dry meat ;P Even for chicken, I usually eat the thighs and legs. My meals usually are: eggs in clarified butter or bacon fat, coconut milk chicken curry, beef stew, chicken soups, kale/chorizo soup. As for fatty meat, I cook a lot of slow-roast meats: chuck, rump roast, fatty ground pork, boston butt, chicken thighs/legs, chicken wings, plenty of beef and pork roasts. Are those fatty enough? I'm looking around for liver and such, even the farmers don't sell them and I live in a rural area! I so want Pate! – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:17

They all sound fatty enough ... But maybe it's significant that you aren't getting much offal (organ meat). Liver and kidneys I find quite calming ... they seem to ease hunger/cravings when other foods don't help. Sorry to see it's not easy to source liver or pate where you live - is there any internet/mail order supplier you could use? – panteleimon Nov 26 2011 at 15:33
Oh, I'm sure the hunger pangs are because of all the flour I've been eating, really, I was eating a lot, before the gallbladder attack. ---- Yes, I already asked for US Wellness liverwurst for Christmas. That's the only way I'll ever get it, given the minimum order amount. I can hardly wait! – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 15:36
But you're not eating it now, so maybe you are trying to make up a deficiency ... I got into eating a lot of cake for a few months and I ended up with a really bad B12 deficiency and I'm sure I was short of other B vitamins. (B vitamins are some of the goodies in liver, as I'm sure you know). Maybe as part of healing from the flour, a multi-B vitamin supplement, just for a while (until the liverwurst arrives!) And of course, flour could have depleted minerals, so a multi-mineral might also help. Good luck! – panteleimon Nov 26 2011 at 16:15

Get some marrow bones and roast some and slap the marrows on top of a hangar steak, yumm. Tons of super nutritious fat. – Jan Nov 26 2011 at 18:30

Egg Yolks would be number one. Bacon would be an option as well. You can hardboil eggs and keep them in the fridge. You can pre-cook bacon and keep it in the freezer.

My favorite fat bomb is Bulletproof Coffee. The guy who made the recipe normally includes grass-fed butter, but you can use egg yolks instead.

blend the following:

10-12 ounces of coffee

2-3 egg yolks

2tbs of MCT oil (this is the best brand: http://www.upgradedself.com/Brain-Upgrades/MCT-Oil/flypage.tpl.html)

You can also use coconut oil instead.

Here's the official Bulletproof Coffee Recipe:

http://www.bulletproofexec.com/how-to-make-your-coffee-bulletproof-and-your-morning-too/

Even if you don't make Bulletproof Coffee, that website has a TON of awesome high fat and paleo info. You should check it out!

I thought about that, but she's talking about a nighttime meal. – Anonymous Chump Nov 26 2011 at 19:35
I don't drink decaffeinated coffee because of irregular heartbeat and fast heartbeat, but I do drink decaf. That recipe reminds me of some cultures that drink hot chocolate with cream, coffee (maybe), and butter in it, before the work day. Hmmm, sounds so good! Hmm.. not exactly looking for a meal though, I only eat a morning meal and an afternoon meal. The hunger at night time is fake... carb cravings... boredom... that sort of thing. That type of "hunger" that makes people reach for ice cream or brownies. Good to know that website has high-fat recipes, going to take a look around! – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 26 2011 at 22:56

Coconut milk smoothie with a whole avocado and coconut oil blended in. Tasty. I have them for breakfast, and it's way better than coconut oil straight.

Try making dinner with coconut milk -- maybe some Tai chicken or a West African stew? If you consume the whole can of coconut milk that's 55 grams of fat, plus whatever is in your meat or used to cook your veggies. This keeps my night time hunger away! BTW, the vicious carb craving cycle, hunger/blood sugar crashes ever few hours, and night time hunger is what convinced me to go Paleo. Not being controlled by erratic blood sugar as much any more is easily the greatest benefit I've had with this lifestyle. .

I don't want a meal, I eat plenty of fat during the day (morning and afternoon meals). I'm not hungry for food at night time, it's just insulin that makes it seem like I'm hungry. Usually people in this situation would eat a tablespoon of coconut oil to make it go away, but I can't eat coconut oil straight from the jar, it's yucky :P I didn't have the fake hunger at night while I was doing strict paleo, why did I have to eat junk? :-( – a mesmerizing trickster Nov 27 2011 at 0:08
How about a spoonful of guacamole? – Heidi Nov 27 2011 at 0:17

Here's what I do anytime I get a craving:

  • 2 scoops of whey protein

  • 1 scoop of coconut milk

  • 1 tbs of melted coconut oil or butter

  • 1.5 tbs of almond butter

Mix it all up adding coconut milk to get you desired constancy.

I mix it all up and make a little porridge and eat it just like that or I freeze it and eat it like an a protein bar, if you get hungry after eating this you probably have something else going on because this pretty much fills me up.
