I'm wondering what foods are recommended post-knee surgery. Unfortunately, I'll probably be doped up on lortab or oxy, but only as needed and not necessarily as prescribed. I'll also be limited in the amount of time I can spend upright, so cooking time is an issue. The simpler, the better.

My concern is appetite and digestion - getting proper amounts of lean meat protein and fibrous carbs. I've had surgery like this prior to going Paleo and I had very little appetite. With the medications, digestion proved to be, uh, interesting.

I make Paleo veggie cookies, so they will likely be my pill-popping food to ease digestion, but are there any specific food(s) or drink(s) recommended?

Thanks,

BJ

In principle, bone broths (stock) with plenty of gelatine should be good for healing, and easy to eat (drink) if you are tired after the op. They take a while to cook initially but are very simple and easy, and one batch can do several meals. If bones are difficult to get hold of, chicken wings make amazingly delicious broth/stock.

I actually had my first bone broth last night. It was a little rough at first, but I'll continue experimenting with it and I'm sure it will make an appearance during recovery. Thanks! – BJ Dec 1 2011 at 6:28
That's good to hear. You can put meat in to make them tastier ... and onions and celery ... and don't forget the salt! Best wishes for your recovery. – panteleimon Dec 2 2011 at 0:56

In the first few days after surgery I would opt for cans or cartons of casein/whey blends such as

or

In addition to a more normal diet...

If you feel up to a normal MRP, this is very good:

Make sure you keep the protein high post-surgery. These are often very catabolic events.

Good to know. I'll definitely make some protein smoothies. Thank you. – BJ Dec 1 2011 at 6:30
