I had been consuming that drink for like nearly 10 years of my life so cutting it out suddenly feels wierd. I am just looking for some alternative to fill the gap.
Yeah I used to drink it too. It totally would trash my stomach and it had tons of sugar. I realized later that the reason it messed up my stomach is that it's often made from a powder that has many additives I'm sensitive to. You can buy Tapioca pearls and boil them in tea and then sweeten to taste with stevia and/or honey. You can use coconut milk or whole milk/heavy cream to make it creamy. There are lots of fun options for flavors. Add fresh herbs like mint or use a different type of tea like rooibos (makes a kind of Thai iced tea thingy) or a flavored tea.
Boba is basically little balls of tapioca starch, right?
I'm in the Perfect Health Diet camp, so tapioca falls into the realm of safe starches that are worth including in your diet. I can't speak for the other ingredients in your average boba tea, but I wouldn't consider the pearls a big concern.
Hope this helps! :)
Tapioca is too starchy for me, personally, but I have been making a chia drink that is somewhat similar...like this: Chia Fresca •about 10 oz of water •1 Tbsp dry chia seeds •a few teaspoons lemon or lime juice •honey or agave nectar, to taste (optional) Stir the chia seeds into the water; let them sit for about five minutes. Stir again, and let sit for as long as you like. The more it sits, the more gel-like the seeds and water become. Add citrus juice and sweetener to taste.
You could play around with it a lot, and I always use stevia to sweeten.
