Also the white half circle at the base of my nails have disappeared on all the nails except for my thumbs and big toes. My nails do not appear to be brittle and are shiny. Prior to eating Paleo my nails had no cracks. Does this mean anything? Nutrient deficiency?
Here is what this website says:
Ridges on nails, longitudinal - deficiency of vitamin A, protein, calcium (anemia, poor circulation, thyroid/parathyroid glands)
Ridges on nails, transverse - fever, infection, inflammation, menstrual problems, period of protein deficiency
This website says lack of B12 is what caused the lack of half moon.
I'm guessing poor collagen/keratin formation due to lack of either sulfur or vitamin C. Try epsom salt baths and C supplementation. Could also be lack of protein or other causes, eg biotin, B12.
I've never had the white semi-circles on any nail except thumb or big toe. Also have had vertical ridges as far back as I remember. Get plenty of protein, more than enough vitamin A or B12. Is it really abnormal?
the main question is which way to the ridges go? if they're the long way, don't sweat it, those can come from lots of things. if they're the short way (perpendicular to the rest of your finger) you may have a deficiency or other medical condition worth looking into. I had deep ridges the short way from Celiac, they grew out and went away when I went primal.
I don't know anything about the half moons but if what others are saying about b12 is true, remember that just because you eat plenty of meat doesn't mean your blood levels are optimal. I found out a few months ago that I'm quite low on B12, likely from an absorption problem left over from the celiac combined with my high stress grad school life using up a lot of b12. after 6 shots and regular consumption of chicken liver (not ready for beef yet) I am still well below where my doctor wants me.
I had super strong, very fast growing ridge-free nails prior to becoming Paleo. Now however, after almost 6 months of Paleo, I have ridges in my nails and they are much thinner and always breaking! Also, I'm noticing I don't feel as good as I did when first starting Paleo. :-(. Wondering why????
