If my acne and skin become noticeably improved with 15,000 IU of vitamin A daily from cod liver oil, can I reasonably conclude that I need 15,000 IU of it daily for improved health? Or does vitamin A mask a deeper cause of acne?

Edit: grammar

I like your question! I've known folks who eat a crappy diet, shovel down pills of accutane and the acne disappeared. Vitamin A alone can't be the solution. – Paul Nov 30 2011 at 10:52

Stop taking the Vitamin A. If you're acne comes back, and you start taking Vitamin A again and your skin clears, then yes you could say that Vitamin A helped to improve your acne. Also try taking it with zinc; there have been studies that zinc + vitamin A also helps.

Acne is usually caused by a high metabolism which keeps the skin oily(which is good), your immune system needs vit A to combat the bacteria on your oily skin.

I personally think vit A needs are very high and take ~50000IU daily, been doing this for months with nothing but health benefits.

what form/supplement are you taking? Not concerned about synthetic vit A? – tempomat Nov 30 2011 at 15:38
^ I second that question... would love to know how your getting that much A. – Bill Nov 30 2011 at 19:41
Also, do you get side effects like chapped lips, dry/flaky skin...? – Bill Nov 30 2011 at 19:45
I take a 10000iu retinol supplement derived from cod liver oil. No side effects. If you get sufficient fat soluble vitamins as well as have a high metabolism taking that much vit A should cause no problems in my experience. – cliff Dec 1 2011 at 0:46
Cool thanks dude. – Bill Dec 1 2011 at 6:08

Vitamin A supplementation causes acne for me. Go figure.

You sure it's the vitamin A and not other things in the supplement? Did you try different brands? – Korion Jan 8 2012 at 15:18
Yep, multiple brands, even multivitamins. Vitamin E does it too. – Matt Jan 8 2012 at 20:52
